Oof, this video makes me feel better about my own pansexual representation. Here's a brief rundown: 1. A 21-year-old empath preacher dedicated to spreading the word of Christ and providing guidance and advice to members of his church. His church sponsors a local foster home, who has paid employees and volunteers help care for the children. The preacher is a frequent volunteer and has built a strong bond with the children, desiring to have kids himself one day. His inspiration to pursue an occupation typically occupied by elder folks was watching his father, the pastor of the church, improve others' lives for the better and encourage them to find their life's purpose. I explain the preacher's pansexuality as him having a heart so big he can love the right person regardless of their sex, but he canonically doesn't know he is pansexual, nor does he think about his orientation often because he's focused on his obligations right now. 2. A literal goddess of lust. I have no excuse for myself. 😅 In terms of redeeming qualities, she loves children and hates the sexual abuse of kids, valuing their innocence and happiness. Additionally, if her flirtations aren't reciprocated or outright rejected, she'll back off, as she knows how it feels to not have your boundaries respected and consent violated. However, she can and will use sex and flirting to manipulate in case there's something to be gained; she's not that great of a person at the end of the day. 3. A 25-year-old photographer obsessed with capturing the "beauty" (i.e. abnormality) of mankind; he will stop at nothing to capture the perfect shot, even if it means traveling to foreign nations to seek out "unique" individuals to photograph. He is a self-absorbed, albeit unconfident man who hides behind a veil of arrogance to mask his vulnerabilities. Regarding his sexuality, he's quite loose, but it's not like he tries to fuck anyone he sees. he has several friendships that are strictly platonic, even viewing them as familial. Outside of that, he may use sexual conquests as a means of building his fragile self-esteem, but of course this never lasts. Despite having pretty good rizz, the number of real relationships he's had are very few and they haven't exactly worked out, mostly because he's clueless as to how healthy relationships work and is a clingy/overbearing and insecure partner. I explain his pansexuality as him being unconcerned with a partner's gender but does find certain types of people to be more attractive than others (he finds traditionally feminine women and rugged, masculine men to be more attractive than most). 4. A 25-year-old abstract artist whose creativity is drawn from the visual and auditory hallucinations he's suffers as a schizophrenic. He's rather paranoid and depressed, rejecting the company of outsiders and preferring to stick to himself and his family. He spends most of his time drawing, painting or sculpting weird, whimsical and beautiful art pieces that defy convention. His talent has attracted him a small amount of notoriety, but he avoids public spectacle and engrosses himself in his work. As you could imagine, romance is far from his mind, but one day, the right person will come along, and the artist will look past that person's gender and value them for their heart. Phew, that's it! As you can see, each character has their flaws, and some do lean into stereotypes, but at the end of the day I want their pansexuality to just be an extension of who they are and not a core attribute that defines them.

Helluva and Hazbin do have plenty of writing flaws. I knew of the gay men stereotypes, but never really thought of the others until now. I do enjoy the show, but wish characters weren't so samey with similar backstories, where there are other stories/perspectives that could been shown. It just makes me think that these must have been topics, like the daddy issues thing, that hit closer to Viv as a person, so maybe that's why they are so prevalent in the show. Personally, I still say the Owl House does an amazing job at queer rep, even if they had to fight for the rep they did have. I loved that show actually got a nonbinary person to play their nonbinary character Raine Whispers. I'm sad that they got shafted for the third season.

This is the part where we all say ‘being weak and/or being feminine does not make or define a person as gay , Vivzie’ in unison. Because Fizz had so much potential for being his own character and they turned him into silly billy bottom boy. Ozzie does NOT need to treat this dude like a pet or an immobile baby. He is capable of EXISTING without his hand being held. And..not every character has to be gay. Especially because this takes place in hell , brings back the ‘all gays go to hell’ bullshit I grew up hearing. I only remember Nifty being straight , and she’s just batshit crazy….like we can have a sweet healthy straight relationship..RIGHT..?

You make a lot of good points. I like the show a lot, probably because I’ve watched it for a long time and I’m attached to the characters (plus my sense of humor is horrible) but they’ve gotta stop making characters so stereotypical, it gets annoying and cliche

Technically Sally Mae isn’t a lesbian, she’s a heterosexual male. Lesbians are homosexual females. Also as an aroace I don’t hate Alistor, he’s my favorite character from the pilot, but I’ve also seen way too many ace characters set as murderers to not find it just a tad cringe that the first aroace character we get in the shows is a serial killer and cannibal. It is balanced out by Octavia though.

I get that SA victims can become hypersexual as a trauma response, and I'd know because I've been there, but Angel is just sexually harassing EVERYONE. I'd have no issue with this if it was more subtle and happened way more rarely, but it doesn't. Every second of screentime Angel, if he's not harassing Husk or Al then chances are he's either in a place where they literally aren't there, or he's just "in a mood". I saw someone say Viv isn't a chcaracter writer, she's an OC creator, and it's scarily accurate.

Im about half way theough the video and i woukd like to say I think their femininity and "stereotypical" behavior as gay men is just the way the characters are rather than that it being *because* they are gay the oversexualness is just the way the character is and all of it is for different reasons for different characters Their behaviors have different reasons for each character and isnt that way bc they are all gay

I would argue that many of the characters play into stereotypes simply because they are in Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel. Overall, they are very sexual shows with very sexual characters. Ofc it isn’t perfect, but I see a lot of it from the viewpoint of the characters being like that regardless of sexuality. Like Blitz is bad at committing to relationships because he hates himself so much. I would say something that kinda points this out could be Adam, as he’s straight (I think) and always talking about his dick and that he loves pussy. It could also be that Viv had a worse understanding of pansexuality at the time of making the characters (cuz that was like four years ago for a lot of them). I do wish there were more non-horny characters overall tho. A lot of them have also had their stereotypical things become less of a ‘main character trait’ as time went on
