Have you done any updates to this wing since you posted this? Very nice job and am wanting to accomplish same type of wing design to create a mold from. Any help or suggestions would be fantastic.
Hello. I have to generate a wing for FW 190 A8. i have the root NACA profile and the tip NACA profile. i Can use your procedure to have the correct wing shape...my question is can i use those NACA profiles to have a correct wing profile? Thank you.
Hi. If you don't mind someone asking questions, how did you prepare your curves used in your top-down reference design? You did say that you used two for the design here. Was it just a case of importing txt files, much like you'd import an aerofoil. Kind Regards, J. ...Also, is it 3D. ?
Hi J, I don't mind answering questions! The reference design is made up of straight construction lines (no curves). The wing is first modelled in XFLR. I then make a spreadsheet for each wing model in Solidworks - the profiles name, leading edge setback, position span-wise and washout are included in the spreadsheet. I use this spreadsheet to draw the reference design on the plane used as the top plane. My XYZ curves are generated on the top plane making the right plane the new top plane. Paul.
I am following your approach to create an elliptically tapered wing. Why have you imported all the profiles in your file (c1,c2,c3,c4,c5...)? Are they the airfoil profile? If yes then where are the curves in the beggining? I thought we can only import through xyz curves on a plane for sketching. Please reply asap
+Sarvesh Thakur Hi Yes, there are the airfoils each one unique. They're created in Xfilr, exported as txt format, and saved as a notes file on desk top. Hope I've answer your question. Paul.
Hello Pschavo, After importing my XYZ curve (.dat foils) they show up as 1mm foils... this is no big deal as it makes scaling really easy...) However the problem I am having is that they are always on my model. If I delete them all their entities go away. When I Convert them, it simply creates a duplicate "sketch." This still isn't a big deal, until I go to loft. When I loft I cannot simply "select the foil out of the design tree" This creates a huge twist in my wing everytime I have to manually select the foil in the model. Any Ideas? Thanks, Justin
Hello Justin. The XYZ curve will reman in the design tree, but can be hidden (right click the curve in the tree, select hide). If deleted then all sketches related to them will also be deleted. Once finished converting all XYZ curves to sketches, I normally create a new folder and move the curves to it. When lofting a wing it's not as important to select from the design tree. You can pick either the top or bottom point of the trailing edge but be consistent throughout the loft. Paul.
pschavo Thanks for the quick reply! I ended up finishing the wing, however due to my process it wasn't as accurate as my standards... I have since redrawn the wing with an exact 3D sketch instead. The wing now contains the 3D sketch as well as angled planes. Now a different problem arises. After importing the .dat file with XYZ curve, they import on the front plane (not sure why). Anyways, after starting a sketch on any other plane, then I convert entities, the airfoil simply seems to turn into a line (of the same thickness as the foil). Even if I rotate this entity the foil never shows up on that plane... Any ideas?
Two questions. 1) what TE thickness do you use? When rotating the the profile around LE centre point. How do you position the trailing edge according to the TE guide curve? How that you can help me with these questions :)

***** Nevermind, I just went into the .Dat, swapped X for Z and made all Z coordinated negative.

Your a aeronautical engineer correct? If so, I was thinking of majoring in this as i love aircraft and always enjoyed math and science in school.
I use .3mm for the TE thickness. The TE is defined with a vertical relation (3.44 min.)
