How to make a Penguin Christmas Ornament with Slow Stitching | Use Fabric Scraps | Holiday DIY
Join me while I make a custom christmas ornament out of leftover fabric scraps and embroidery floss. This holiday ornament of a penguin on a iceberg on a winter lake in the north pole was inspired by some of the fabric I used recently on another projects. I filmed my process of figuring out how to make this design and used basic embroidery stitches to add texture and detail to the scene.

DIY Face Mask (Easy Sewing Tutorial): How to make a mask without a pattern
I like these easy-to-make bookmarks. For the long rectangular bookmarks, I don't hand stitch the opening because I find the top stitching closes the opening. Thanks for the lovely ideas.
Thanks for the tip!
Whats pul
Polyurethane Laminate Fabric or PUL is a soft, flexible, hardwearing and waterproof fabric. It is a waterproof fabric
😊thanks for sharing these lovely book mark ideas. All of them are so cute and useful for me to create some gifts for my students and g.nieces! 😊🤗
You are so welcome!
You lost me when you made the openings for the straps?
That part is a little tricky. Try watching again and maybe just go for it yourself.
Hi there, thanks for this video. What type of "scrap" fabric is best for the knees of work jeans?
I think it’s best to use a woven fabric. Fabric with a stretch might not hold up as well. For this video I used some cotton woven kid print fabric. In the past, I’ve also used a sturdier fabric like a corduroy or linen.
You have a very pleasant voice and great tutorial video. So very hard to listen to others with a high squeaky voice. The pin cushion is adorable. Love it. Thank you for posting. :)
You are so welcome! Thanks for the kind words.
This was a great video. She makes it look so easy. Thank you so much.
I’m so glad you liked it!
Great scrap buster. ❤😊I will try this
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy making them!
You have a typo… 66”x 1.5”
Oh really? Thanks! I didn’t notice. I’ll add the correct measurements soon.
pretty
Thank you!!!!
Would a darning stitch not make the edges of the rip stronger than even a whip stitch?
That’s a good idea!
Thank you so much for the detailed video tutorial!! I love how you show every step. It was very easy to follow for beginners like myself. I made a set of the 2nd style to gift to family and am so happy with the beautiful results.
I'm so happy to hear that you tried them. Happy sewing!!
Thank you so much! I will try to make this!
Have fun!
I made some very simple pads by just cutting out 1 ft squares of flannel. I joined two pieces together by zig-zagging realy well around the edges Then I folded the left side in to the centre then the right side into the centre, whilst inserting a strip of plastic in the bottom layer. I used very thin plastic from an old raincoat. The plastic is removed for washing. Later on I made some larger wider pads for night-time. As long as I wear snug underwear they always stay in place
Wow! That’s great.
Thank you so much for your lovely tutorial! I made one of these pincushions a few months ago from a tutorial on a different channel and it didn't turn out very well. Your video is so much clearer easier to understand, and you have a very nice teaching style. I'm going to try again. 🙂
You are so welcome! Thanks so much!
Great project. ❤
Glad you like it!
Why do they need the wings or the buttons
The wings will help reduce mess on the edges of an undergarment. The snaps(button) will keep the pad from traveling as you walk. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tutorial. Just what I have been looking for!! I have a LOT of scraps from other projects. Again Thanks
Wonderful! Glad to help!
As you may know, some of us beginners tend to waste fabric while cutting for small projects. These projects have put a new light on wasted fabric. Thank you so much for sharing these ideas. No more waste of fabric and money. 😂
I keep a large stash of straps. I do go through it at times and get rid of some when it gets too large. But I tend to regret it later.
What can be used in place of walnut shells. I can’t get them here. I do have an abundance of beach sand though. 🤷🏼♀️
I haven’t tried but I’ve heard that black sand can be used. Steel wool is another option.
WOW, awesome. Love this project. Thank you for your tutorial ❤
You are so welcome! Glad you like it.
Where can I purchase the large sheet of patch fabric you are using?
This is a Dritz Denim Iron-On Patching Cloth. It's 9"x12" and you can get it at JoAnn's in the U.S.
@@mendingandmaking Hi. What type of "scrap" fabric is best?
What kind of thimble are you using?
I’m using the Dritz soft comfort thimble.
I've never been a great sewer. I just kinda start and hope for the best. My stitches always hold up, but they're never pretty. Could you do a video on the stitching you did here and how to tie it off? I have some jeans I need to patch. Thanks 😊
That's a great idea! I'll have to put this video subject on my to-do list. Your hand stitching will get better with practice. And remember, it doesn't have to be prefect. It just has to get the job done.
What materials did you use?
I’ll be happy to list them. The fabric used is flannel, cotton fleece and PUL. The flannel can also be used in place of the fleece. I actually reused old flannel blankets. For the notions, all purpose thread and KAM snaps. You can also use regular sew-on metal snaps. I hope this helps!
I love this and will try it soon. Thank you for sharing!
Please do!
Where did you purchase the cotton fleece and the Pul? The fleece is stores is not cotton and rather fuzzy. Wanting to make these for a mission project.
It looks like the online store that I purchased the fabric is no longer online though I do see some other resources. I see that Amazon (fabric.com) actually offers Organic Cotton Fleece and PUL Fabric. JoAnn Fabric has white PUL online. I have made many pads with Flannel and it works really well.
Why not stitch over opening with machine all the way around?
Good question. I decided to add the stitch around the bookmark afterwards. Wasn’t my original plan. You can definitely just stitch it closed with the machine.
I love this! Unfortunately, the last pair of pants with holes I threw out, but there are a pair or two I will need to use this technique in the near future
Go for it! Embrace the flaws and make it look interesting.
My favourite is the third one where you made the Pieced Book Mark from scraps. I am planning to make that one. Thanknyou.
Wonderful! It was fun and easy to make.
Thank You very much! It looks great ! And it s very useful thing for me . 🌹🇳🇴
Glad it was helpful!
We use steel wool in place of the walnut shells to put inside to sharpen the needles.
Yes, steel wool is another option for sharpening needles.
Do you then add more batting?
thanks so much, I really need to make a new one! Its much easier to not cut the circle out until it is sewn, ie, sew on the drawn lines, then cut out the circle :) I do this when I am making small dolls as well. Much easier
Great idea! Thanks for sharing it!
What type of iron do you use? And where did you buy it from?
It's a Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Steam Iron. I got it from Amazon. I do a lot of small sized sewing projects and it's the perfect size for working on a table top. I use it along with my wool ironing mat.
I love to make my own ornaments, but I failed at Christmas this year.
It’s okay. There’s always next year! For myself, I had a long list of projects but only got a handful completed. Maybe starting earlier next year will help.
Why did you not put interfacing in the last one?
Hi! I added craft interfacing on one side of all 3 book markers. For the last marker (quilted), I didn't think I needed interfacing for the front piece since it was thicker with all of the vertical seams from piecing it. The interfacing is use to add a little "stiffness" to the fabric. I hope this helps!
Very pretty 💖💖💖
Thank you! 🤗
What a cute idea and easy to do.
It was so much fun to make.
Such a pretty pincushion! I can’t wait to give it a try.
Please do! It’s an easy project.
I love this ornament. I really want to make it but I might not be able to for this Christmas. Still too much to do, but I can still make a couple and put n my box with other home made goodies. I watched one of your other videos and subscribed. I love little gifts to make. Thank you.❤
I totally understand! I had a large list of makes for Xmas and barely made a dent on it.
@@mendingandmaking I sure understand that. I always say I’m going to start making items for the next Christmas, throughout the year, but it never seems to happen. I remember one Christmas when my kids were little. I was making everyone in the family homemade gifts and through the week before Christmas, I was up late every night and I finally finished. But you know what ? I gave myself no time to enjoy December by listening to Christmas music and watching my favorite Christmas movies and enjoy all the decorations. Christmas Day I cried because I felt like I missed Christmas. I didn’t have the excitement and I was wore out because I did everything in December. I said I would never do that again and haven’t. But I really need to work on things throughout the year. Lol!!! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🏼🌨🌬⛄️☃️🙏🏻
i know what you mean. Don't want to do that again! Enjoy and happy new years too!
I enjoyed watching your process. I’m inspired to try to make something now!
Go for it!
This is a delight. Well done and thank you 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much for watching! I would love to hear if you like to make your own ornament too!
Thanks so much for watching! I would love to hear from you if you've tried to make cloth pads yourself.
Lovely tutorial 😊 These make lovely little gifts don't they, especially if you are in a club that does 'secret santa' ..I've been making these for years, and reusing my old pillows too.
That's a great idea! Thanks for watching!
No need to hand stitch the side closed. When you stitch around the end, the side will naturally close.
That is true! I think I decided to do the topstitch afterwards. Thanks for pointing that out!
I always wondered what to do with my scraps! Great ideas!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for share!! I Will make one for me. Hugs from Argentina.❤
You’re welcome 😊 have fun!
