I worked with Zammit as a surgical intern over a decade ago and I can tell you he is more than capable of kicking staff members. While working with him, I was verbally abused by Zammit repeatedly. He would not communicate properly with his staff members and frequently would ignore us when we would try to speak with him about patient related affairs. He used to chain smoke in his practice in front of his patients, often exposing them to second hand smoke. He also used to lie to them about their diagnosis, which resulted in patients with terminal conditions being told that they did not have cancer on more than one occasion. One Zammit accused me of ``gross incompetence'' in a surgical room in front of a whole panel of doctors of nurses because a surgical patient had his operation cancelled due to a chronic medical condition, even though the patient in question was not even under my care. I once had a patient whom I had been interviewing for a preoperative assessment who had uncontrolled high blood pressure. He usually used to ignore me but when I approached him to ask him whether he wanted the anaethesiologist on call or the one working the next day to be informed about the patient's medical condition, he looked incredulously at me and said - ``can't you solve a simple problem on your own ?'' It was clear from the beginning he considered it to be beneath him to even speak to his staff. There was another incident where a young lady due to be operated on her thyroid was admitted to our service. During rounds Zammit said to her - ``I told my boys ( meaning me and the other intern ) to call up your medical consultant to tell him about your progress - they did not.'' I told him he never said that to me. He then snapped back saying - ``oh no, you were there''. In reality, he had never spoken to me about this, possibly to the other intern, but definitely not to me. By far the worst incident occurred when Zammit threw a patient's file in my face when he read something in it that I had written he did not agree with. That was by far the most painful and humiliating episode of my surgical internship. Many nurses at St Luke's hospital did not even wish to work with him because of his rude and aggressive manner towards the staff. He may have been acquitted by his medical peers but he is far from being innocent of workplace bullying.
