As long as you take care of them they are good reliable engines. If you go out and beat on them with a hot foot and don't maintain them you will get a year or 2 years tops. But that's the same as a new motor. most of the time when I repower and pull one of these off blown up the customer had the boat for less then 2 years and didn't take care of it doing just basic maintenances oil, plugs, fogging, impeller, and gear lube. compression test show a lot about the life left in the engine.

We plug into with a computer program only dealers and shops will have and pull the hours and any faults they have or had. The standard person isn't gonna pay $2,000+ for the program. Any Suzuki dealer can plug into this engine because it is a Suzuki motor. Thanks, James Jr

100psi-120psi isn't low for a 1988 25hp mercury its normal I've sold a few of them in the last 15 years. we have 3 compression gauges and use 2 per motor we also scope the cylinders for scoring along with a leak down. Its not new but its also not a concerning PSI as both cylinders came back the same. If it was bad we would of put it with the other 200+ part out engines. Some of the later models were 120PSI-140PSI but even those can operate perfectly fine at 100-110PSI. Thanks, James Jr

@@bmrpartsmarine6515 can’t find the freeze plug, there is a label on the block starboard side , d270080902. #28, then 819603a 8 under that, 00/00, and p/h asy-dressed-08. 40 per/trim. No luck with any of them coming up as a part number. Thx for replying.

Yes it is the low compression point makes them easier to start you're thinking compression on a 40hp which is between 180PSI and 220PSI. There isn't much info online for small engines low compression. Thanks, James Jr

Depends on the boat and the steering cable. also the old 100hp I believe had 2 blocks a 4cyl or a 6cyl that makes a difference aswell. I've never had a complaint on steering for these engines if that helps. Thanks, James Jr

Unfortunately there isn't much anyone can do or say over the computer. You most like have exposed wire somewhere that the water got to. You would need to take it in somewhere and have actual diagnostics done to figure out why it actually happened. My guess is just that a guess. Thanks, James Jr

Unfortunately I am not the person to ask on that. The consumption changes per boat weight, prop size, and gear. You're gonna have to find a forum on that info as we sell new and used engines we don't run fuel consumption tests.
