Progressive Dynamics PD4135KW2B Panel vs Victron Energy Blue Smart IP22 Charger

In the really early days of being an RV owner, I had some hard lessons to learn. One was how the stock lead-acid battery just didn’t last very long. I only had the Victron Energy SmartShunt installed and boondocked outside the Grand Canon. When I woke up the battery was at 80%. I knew we had a full day of driving before we could put any type of proper charge on the battery, so I fired up the ge...

Thank you for putting this video out. I plan on adding a lithium battery for next season. I think I will run an inverter off it to power the TV while we boondock. The video gives me a good idea as to what I will be dealing with back there.
Thank for watching. Where are you going to install the inverter? I put mine behind the refrigerator cooler, worked out great because it was unused space.
@@SamCarleton I think I will mount it in the battery area somewhere. I use the fridge/freezer it came with. I ended up building a slide out like the Lunas used to have since it was a PITA to open and close the fridge. I had an Intech Persue for a few years before the Luna.
Great video! Would love to know more about the tent/enclosure you have attached to the side canopy.
Thx we just got the Intech flyer a were thinking about getting these
Didn't see this when we were looking. We ended up buying a hybrid futon and it actually fit perfect. It's heavy!
My concern is durability. Will this cover hold up during windy winters. First brand I tried blew apart in one season. So, for $400+ bucks will it last?
It held up very well the first winter. Have not used it this winter because we are keeping the Luna in our driveway despite the HOA rules. It’s been there since late January and no complaints. I’m concerned that there will be complaints if I put the cover in it🤪
Funny!
Thanks for the info. Could you be able to fit the king size millard trifold mattress? How many inches do you have left?
North-South no extra room, East-West about 6 inches
Great video, I was surprised see to that Intech used partial board instead of plywood.
Don't visit Drummond Island without a boat. Otherwise you won't see most of the Island.
Is there a power concern when using all 4 at the same time?
What site number were you in? Is a nice one
I want to say 27, it was the second to last one on the lake, just a wonderful location!
Loving your videos. My husband and I are considering the Luna Rover. Can you tell me where you got the tent that you’re using on the side?
Where I got it, no it is sold by lots of companies and I don't remember which one I ordered it from. But I do know the make/model we have, the ARB Awning and their Awning room: arbusa.com/tents-awnings-camping/awnings-accessories/
Are there after market batwings for the Luna Rover kitchen?
I don't know. We have the ARB awning on the right of the Luna for the awning room. My main concern with a batwing is where will the kitchen door go? over or under the bat wing? I am not a fan of the idea of the batwing being under the door and don't think there are any with the clearance to allow it to open it under it.
Wanted to add the 21 Rover is FULL of angled, and stripped screws which is a little bothersome.
I ran into a couple on my '22 Luna. The speakers are the biggest culprit.
The screws are deceiving, they appear stripped, but the truth is they NOT Phillps head, but square head screws. Once I realized that, I’ve been able to take them in and out with ease.
@@SamCarleton I realized that right way when I was removing the fridge/freezer surround.
Thanks! Subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
Very great video! You answered all my questions 🤓 .. Question for ya! I have a 2019 Jeep renegade that can pull 2000pds, would the luna be to heavy to pull?
That is a tricky question. What I have learned is that often the engine is not the limiting factor when it comes to towing. It is the suspension and the control. Control is the biggest issue... Can you control what you are towing when things go wrong? The rule I have heard is that you should not tow more than 80% of what the vehicle is rated. For my Rubicon that can tow 3200lb, that is 2560lb. I know folks tow more than 3200 and get away with it. In my case, I would never want to know that I caused someone else harm (or worse) because I could not control what I was towing.
Thanks for the trifold mattress idea! Any update on how it’s working out for you?
It works wonderfully! We took the Luna out west for a 3 week trip last year and it was just wonderful! I think I mentioned this in the video, but you do need to make sure you lay it out correctly. The design of the trifold is that one one side they are connected on the top to fold face to face, on the other side they are connected at the bottom to fold bottom to bottom. The easy way to fold it up is with the bottom to bottom towards the top, but if you do that, you will be falling into the crack all the time. So I always make sure the top-to-top is towards the head, and then it is simply perfect!
@@escapingthenest2020 Thanks for the update! Did you end up using it as a couch as well? We're trying to decide if we want to get the futons or do our own thing. My husband is also a large guy!
@@drlizcarter Actually, we didn't spent much time in the Luna except for sleeping so we never had the need. There have been a few times I was working on a project in the Luna and I sat on it fully folded up, a little squishy, but it seemed to be comfortable.
The space between the matress and the wall is perfect to put some stuff there as folding chairs or a portable generator
I have a interesting experience to share with the portable generator: I purchased the Luna 2000 miles away from home from a gentleman who also sold us the generator he had purchased for the Luna. Our Luna does not have the toilet, so he placed the generator in that storage location. I left it there and drove home. On the final day of the drive home I hit a bump or something and the generator turned on it's side. Gas leaked out. It took us weeks to get the smell out! Ever since the generator is strapped down in the tow vehicle (TV), nice and secure! We keep our chairs strapped down in the TV, too. We transport light stuff in the main space of the Luna and things we can fit into a tub that is OK to move around a bit, because it will!
@@escapingthenest2020 I got a gas generator but I just purchased a solar Generator Bluetti AC50S. I will put the tv on it and the 12 volts fridge gonna be great. I will have enough power with this one.. it's a teardrop after all not a house loll Want to keep that feeling of living an adventure
@@papa54321 Before getting the Luna I had the GoalZero Yeti 200X. I don't have a solar panel, but I can charge it up on my tow vehicle (TV). On my 3 week trip out west last summer one night we boondocked. I moved the Dometic Powered Cooler to the TV and powered it off the Yeti 200X for the night, about 8 hours. The Yeti 200X started at 100% and when I got up and checked it, it was at 11%. In the same time the 55Ah SLA house battery dropped form 90% to 80% and was ONLY running the fan! In the morning I fired up the generator to charge both the Yeti 200X and the house battery, in about 90 minutes of running the house battery only went to 81%! My take away: the charger built into the all-in-one panel of the Luna isn't very good and the Yeti 200X is great for an overnight, but that is about it! It looks like the Generator Bluetti AC50S is two or three times bigger then my Yeti. It seems to me that it would be a great solution for my Dometic Powered Cooler if: I am moving daily to top off the battery with the TV or I have solar to top it off during the day. My long term goal is to add enough solar to the Luna to allow me to spend a week boondocking and working out of the Luna. We will see!
@@escapingthenest2020 Wile charging whole driving was charging at 113W better than trying to use an inverter to charge it on 120V I'm impressed... ruclips.net/video/dG6zetODc1M/видео.html
@@papa54321 sorry, I don't know French, so I am not sure what you said in the video, but I like the setup. My tow vehicle has a small inverter build in, so that is what I use to charge my Yeti 200X. Considering how small my Yeti is, it does just fine for my needs. GoalZero does make a 12v charger, if I had their larger battery I would get it because it will charge faster. It looks like Bluetti Power makes one for your unit, too, but it is very expensive. If I needed fast charging, I see it as a good option. I would be using this type of thing on long trips where I have more time in the vehicle to charge the battery, so it is more then I need. www.bluettipower.com/products/dc-charging-enhanncer-d050s
Nicely done! Are you still happy with the Luna overall?
Very much so, we added the ARB awning room and that made a HUGE difference! We stay bug free for meals, we now change in there and set up the portapotyy there for midnight visits. It makes a world of difference!
What is the name if the company that makes it, or where can I buy one? Thanks
This is the company that makes the cover. It looks like you cannot order it from them, but have to order it from Intech, but... that link isn't working :( pahaque.com/products/luna-trailer-cover
Just out of curiosity, do you pull your Luna trailer with the Jeep and if so what engine does your Jeep have? I was considering getting a Luna Rover and my Jeep has the 2.0 turbo so I am hoping it is light enough for the 2.0 to pull.
Our 2020 JLUR has the 3.6L V6, which is our tow vehicle. The Wrangler does a wonderful job. We took it out west last year and climbed mounts with no issue. I have learned a lot about towing since that trip... on that trip we do 75~80 mph and even climbed a mountain or to in the 70+ mph. With all we have learned, we see the wisdom of keeping the speed down at 65 mph and when climbing keeping the RPM below 4000 when possible, regardless of our speed. We have come to appreciate the idea there is no need to rush:)
Hi Sam, we're thinking about a Luna because we can put it in the garage. Hmmm, question though, are you thinking about storing your Luna inside the garage? Will it fit? Thoughts & thanks for your time :)
We talked about storing it in the garage, but in the 20 years we have been here, the garage always seems to find other purposes than holding cars, so... we didn't want to give up the space to the Luna. That is why we got the cover, it lives at a storage place not far from us and is outside all the time. From all I have heard, what is the hardest on any RV is the UV light from the sun. While I have not tried to get it into our garage, I have heard that if you do not have the roof rack it fits (only the ROver comes with the roof rack). I have also heard that Rover owners can do one or two things to make it fit: 1) take the cross bars off the roof rack, which I have done and is really easy. 2) let air out of the tires.
We store our Luna Rover in our garage because we have an HOA. I had to remove the roof rack cross bars to do so and it's tight but it fits!
i put an air mattress in mine!!! but this would be the next go with finding out that they make a tri fold mattress now!
My wife and I have discovered that air matters are not for us. We are not a fan of the fact when one moves it moves the other one. When it is just me, I am find on one, but I do like this mattress a ton better! It is not all that different from the one we have at home.
