My Brother's Adventures
США
Добавлен 10 дек 2018
My brother made this channel to share some of his adventures with me. He sets his mind to some challenging experience that he's going to complete regardless of the needless risks that he faces along the way. However, on some outings, he sets the bar too high, cuts the trip short and lives to adventure another day. That's when I have to wonder, what was he thinking?
It would seem as if his lack of planning was almost intentional to increase the difficulty of the trips. Some of that same approach might transfer to the production quality being raw and less structured, but he's still my brother, so I'll watch.

I found a huge BLM site near an OHV park. A few people enjoyed the trails, but no other midweek campers besides me. My pick of the sites and free fire wood.
Camp Breakfast

I found a camp that I could see myself staying for more than just last night. That means no rushed breakfast to get out of camp this morning.

Hope all is going well.
@@outdooriowan things are awesome out here. Always something different to see around each corner
Nothing like living in the stone age for no reason ??
@@leep5733 for sure leaning into the primitive part of primitive camp sites.
Look up for sasquash.
I think there is a lot of honor in not quitting (see David Goggins). Unless you're having a medical emergency, of course.
Thanks. That's a nicer way of looking at it.
It probably saw its reflection in your window and attacked it, to its surprise and yours! lol
I'm just glad I didn't have to vacate my wrangler until it was done eating whatever it wanted.
Those look like raccoon tracks
I thought so as well
skunk
Oh I hope not. Possible' It walked away slow. So I didn't seem to bother it that much, maybe it didn't feel the need to spray.
What creatures ya think Chupacabra? I am not making fun of you
American mink? Seems like only a raccoon would be that bold.
Those rooftop tents are making more sense now .😂
I might just throw my air mattress on the roof tonight. I'm not having any biting bug issues, so it's an option.
That’s crazy! We have had some animal experiences but nothing like this! We love camping and are trying to document our camping and cabin building journey on our channel
Man, Always an adventure.
@@outdooriowan yes, in the Midwest I would have thought racoon, but those are super rare out here.
Must have been a mountain lion
funny, but more people report seeing mountain lions than raccoons in Utah
Looks like a nice campsite. Epic cook pot.
@outdooriowan it was nice to have the camp ground all to myself and that pot works very well.
Looking at you. Throwing stuff away.
It should not be as big of a deal for me as it is. Thanks for the encouragement.
Man, that looks difficult.
I see kids do it like it's routine. For sure, difficult to learn, but I'm thinking, I'm just one or two small changes from joining the rest of the friction fire making 1% of Americans.
You need a football called Wilson to cheer you on
Ha ha. We have used that scene as a reference for the point where it all clicks. I will get there eventually.
Nice it’s good to get outside, it’s been really nice out here in Canada. I’ve been taking advantage of this beautiful weather.
I am better in cooler weather, but I will adapt a little more each day. Until then it is nice to have options.
Looks warm, id be like that SpongeBob scene "water"
Ha ha. It wasn't bad that day, but this past week has been brutal, unless I am up in the mountains.
Heck yeah man. I can't wait to see this adventure.
There are so many little places to check out, I don't know where to start.
Does your mother know where you are?
Onwards
It does taste better when earned. I climbed a mountain once, boiled and egg, put some salt on it, my god it was the best egg I ever had in my life. I still think about it sometimes 😂 (I think I needed the salt after exercise so my body craved it because when I ate another at home it just wasn't the same 😢)😂
Absolutely agree. My son had his first Ramen bomb in the back country and didn't believe that it would not taste the same at home. I think it took him two bites. He looked defeated.
Always carry patches that will help a lot and maybe give you something to do in the evening when you stop also think about lining inside of tires good slightly more weight but way less flats
great advice. When I could not find or hear the leak, I just gave up on the tube. I should kept them and put them under water and patch later.
Amazing. I have family in iowa and i wanna ride there 👌
Really? What part of Iowa?
@mybrothersadventures they live on the outskirts of iowa city 👌
@@SwimBikeRunStu well that is the area of the first day of this trip. (The video just before this one) Also where the annual core4 race is held. I hope you get a chance to ride some Iowa trails.
Heck yeah man congrats. I see below maybe the Cowboy trail?
Yes. If solo, l might lean towards cowboy. Katy would be good if another biker joined me.
Hey Steve, Steve here! Decided to check out your content. Man, some of those trails looked pretty...eh, almost non-existent! The adventure looked like alot of fun. Looking forward to future vids, take care.
Thanks for the support. Your power bank came in clutch. Hope to see you in the back country again soon.
Congrats on completing your trip! Where to next?
Well hmmm. I thought about doing the American Discovery Trail Midwestern loop. I sort of made that up looking at the north and south routes. However, I might prefer to do the Katy Trail or cowboy trail next.
Good job man. This trip looked nicer than your other attempts.
Thanks. The weather was more kind this time around.
This is awesome! You could get the engagement you deserve with S M Zeus!!
I'm not sure I'm ready for the big time as a creator. I'm lucky to just survive my adventures, let alone make a quality product suitable for the masses.
Looks like a fun trip! 10yrs or so ago I did a some scouting between Solon & Oasis for the Hoover Trail and didn’t see anything that looked like a trail. Sounded like an owl was serenading you there at the end. Way to get out while the weather was halfway decent.👍👍
I had a great time. Certainly there is still the land from the old rail road that doesn't have corn growing on it yet, but I'm guessing I saw the same thing you did 10 years ago. It sure would be nice to extend the trail a few more miles north of Oasis, but I also understand private land owners might not feel the same.
Man looks like a good setup you have there. That's a nice easy way a cleaning out your campsite. Hope to see you in a month. Keep it up.
Yes, that was unexpected, but way better than plan A. Also looking forward to the next trip in a month
Wow that place is epic in the winter. Great video. Keep up the good work.
It was a good time. I am out this weekend Jeep camping and testing my set up against the cold.
Did you ever get a fire started?
In my defense all that wood was wet. I tried to take off that outside layer and then let it sit for a few hours. I only brought two fire starters. Eventually, yes I did get a fire going to cook my supper.
Nice video. I can't wait to meet up again and do some hot tenting.
I still haven't taken my hot tent out in cold enough weather, yet. Mostly, because I lack the stove, but not opposed to using a buddy heater or borrowing from a friend.
@@mybrothersadventures I got a stove you can use.
@@outdooriowan fantastic! That gives me more time to decide on what features I'm willing to pay for in a tent stove.
Looks like a nice way to spend time outside. I probably would’ve been afraid of ending up in the ditch and scrapping my plans.
@@DarrinOchsner jeeps can climb out of some ditches, but they are no good when they roll over like a turtle on its back. Winter camping is a special kind of quiet that I do enjoy.
Absolutely beautiful ❤
Thanks. it was nice to get out again.
Man you're awesome. I need to start pushing myself like you do. Keep it up.
Thanks. I do need to get out more consistently for sure, if I want to start hiking hills too.
I am glad you found your lost footage.
Me too. Thanks
I'll watch this video again on a frigid January day to remind myself it could be much worse.
It can be challenging to find a perspective that concludes in this not being the worst idea. Thanks for the effort.
Get some pogies, even cheap ones make a world of difference on the hands!
I do like the idea of the additional storage pogies offer over mittens as well.
I agree with your wife.
She tends to be right when it comes to my trips.
Man your tough. I would have never started.
I am a little braver knowing help isn't far.
You should feel good that you tried a lot of others wouldn't. I want to try a November bike packing trip. You inspired me to try. Thanks for the video
I totally agree. If I only started trips I knew I could finish, I would not get out half as much a I do.
@@mybrothersadventures i find that it's getting wet that kills it, all my riding jackets don't breathe well so I get wet even if it's not raining. My rain jacket pretty much baked me. I have to find something that breathes.... Keep on riding and stay safe
@@bikepackingover50trying to find that perfect piece of gear captures my interest for hours. If it's out there, I probably don't want to pay what it is worth. I'm not sure if I believe in waterproof breathable anymore. It might be just a matter of picking the lesser of two uncomfortable options.
I am the same I don't like to spend i visit the mountain Warehouse here in Ottawa and they have deals from time to time picked up the orange down coat you may have seen in my winter video for around 50.00 I have one jacket that has zippers in the underarms and has a bit of ventilation but opening up the jacket works best
@@bikepackingover50, yes, I saw that jacket. I too have a discount puffy that does just enough for me for the price. I tend to "use up" my gear regardless of how much I pay, so since I know I'll be replacing i spend accordingly.
I just checked the official ADTS GPX file and it takes you straight into Adel, weird that both those trails are called the same.
It was my own lack of research. It is a trail loop. I was taking the extra long way that would have eventually got me to Adel just before completing the circle back to Urbandale.
Yes, I discovered that on further investigation. I wonder if the ADT should take the initial way you went, it looks shorter if you bypass Adel and possibly more interesting being away from the road. (I maintain the ADT GPX/TBT, but the state coordinator would propose a change)
My wife was watching your videos and commented “Is this a video on how not to do bike touring”? She is used to seeing how I manage the planning, prep, and handling problems on route. One thing I can touch on was managing flat tires. Where was your patch kit to repair the tubes. Why did you lose your spare tube by keeping in an open basket. Examining the tire inside and out is the first step before you put another tube in. Why did you burn through your CO2 cartridges before using your pump. The more environmentally responsible riders patch their tubes and use CO2 inflators as en emergency fixer.
Oh yes Shrader vs Presta.
All great questions. Started with only CO2. Had to walk my bike back to last town to find a pump to buy after the CO2 was gone. Couldn't find the leak for the life of me so I didn't have any place to put my patch kit. All this said, yes, not well planned and a lot learned on the fly. Bottom line your wife was right.
Very hard to follow along with this video...sorry.
I would say that is spot on assessment. Kind of you to watch and comment. Thanks.
"Like hammered shit"
At that moment, for sure. However, she recovered quickly and looks back feeling accomplished.
The heck with goat cheese. The sign says Gelato man! When I'm biking, my rule is dessert first! I stop for craft beer or ice cream. Rarely both together unless there's an amazing Porter. In that case Gelato and Beer is amazing. Enjoy your just go for it attitude.
Dang it! I should have order the Gelato. So many lessons learned.
Good call. You going to do the Cowboy trail next?
I was thinking Katy Trail in Missouri, but only because I had never heard of the Cowboy Trail. Sounds interesting. Googling now.
@@mybrothersadventures I think it would be a good biking trail.
Man, you didn't get your goal, but that campsite looked pretty sweet.
There was some hike in sites that I didn't get to check out. It was the right thing to cut the day short.
CONGRATULATIONS. You are a beast. That hotel looked a little lacking.
Thanks. It was a real basic AirBNB, but pretty classing compared to ditches and roadside parks earlier in the week. I did learn that some AirBNB places automatically reject 1st time users of the app. Started to get worried after the first couple declines.
Man you are a beast. Keep it up
About to get back on trail and back to the fun parts.
