Is you car's engine healthy?! How to do a compression and leak down test so you can tell!
I admit, it has been a while, but in today's video we're going to be doing a compression test as well as a leak down test on the '66 Rambler. Though I'm doing this on an old car with a old engine, the process for doing these test is the same across nearly all interal combustion engines. Join me and learn a little bit about how to perform these tests and see what condition the Rambler's engine is in.

I've Never Done This Before! - Holley Model 1940 Rebuild
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 года назад
In today's video, I'm going to take you along as I do something that I've never done before: rebuild a carburetor. The '66 Rambler has a Holley Model 1940 single barrel carburetor that has an obvious vacuum leak, is corroded, and generally just cobbled together in order to make it work. And it works poorly at that! So, with the help of a rebuild kit from Mike's Carburetor Parts in Chehalis Wash...

    I can confirm now anyone do you watching this video that has SPC upper control arms on their vehicle do not do what he did in this video. By removing that top 32 mm not you’re going to allow the plates underneath the control arm to move therefore you would have to get a realignment. The proper way to remove, this from the truck is remove the cotter pin and castle nut underneath on the bottom of the upper ball joint where it goes through the top of the steering knuckle. Then use a ball joint press to press it up through the knuckle. Removing that 32 mm nut is going to cause the plates to move which determine your camper and caster you’re going to have to take your vehicle in to get an alignment if you do it that way

    • @WeekendWrenchTurner
      @WeekendWrenchTurner Месяц назад

      This is true and thank you for adding this comment. I do this because I have lifetime alignments for my truck through Firestone so I always get an alignment afterwards. Should probably do that regardless of whether you move these plates, though that is just my opinion.

    • @rthomas2157
      @rthomas2157 29 дней назад

      If you properly remove these from the control arms, there is no need to get an alignment.

  • @rthomas2157
    @rthomas2157 Месяц назад

    Why did you remove the 32 mm nut on top of the SPC upper control arms? That allow the plates underneath to move. Therefore, when you put it back on having your alignment off? In speaking with SPC they are advising to remove The castle nut underneath where it goes through the top of the steering knuckle not that 32 mm to avoid your alignment being off when you put it back on the truck

    • @sierraecho884
      @sierraecho884 9 месяцев назад

      @@WeekendWrenchTurner PETG is a fantastic material for that, there are better materials but they are also way more money and way harder to print, they also release more toxins and so on. When printing a structural part like this make sure the layer orientation is according to the force flow within the part and use wider extrusion widths, so for instance I am using 0.8mm line width with a 0.4mm nozzle. This increases strength through better layer adhesion further. Also increase outer most perimeter instead of infill, the most outer layer is the most load bearing as well, thus hollow round bars etc. exists they are almost as strong as a filled bar but 90% less heavy and expensive. You are most welcome. I intend to use my vise to create small beads perpendicular to the bend lines to stiffen the corner further. This is very useful to increase strength for less weight and less money. I would also try to roll my own hinges, here I am not sure how the 3D print would hold up, maybe with lots of lubrication the print will hold up. Hinges can be expensive and honestly it would be just cool to make my own just for the fun on it. Maybe you can make a video for the hinge rolling or corner beads or some cool stamps and cutouts. You can also print more complex tool designs with moving brake parts for U channels and all sorts of cool stuff. I hope you try some of it out. If the 3D printed part fails there is still the possibility to make a zinc alloy metal cast, zinc melts at about 420°C and I can easily melt and cast that stuff at home on my camping bbq torch xD

    My unit did not come with a hole saw. But I can always use a drill bit and step up drill, if needed

    Great video bud! I did notice a leftover screw on the bench tho. JK. 😆 How much will I generally spend for all the parts to do a complete rebuild like this? Is it a kit you buy? And how long does it take generally, about 3 hours? These questions will determine if it's worth it to me to spend the time to rebuild one myself. And what is the most common problem as to why an alternator even "goes out"? Is it the brushes? or can it be the rectifier or the regulator? Don't those need to be tested to find out if that's the actual reason it croaked?

      If I recall, at the time it was about $65 for parts. Pretty sure I got them with a bunch of other parts from Partsouq, so shipping wasn't bad overall.

      @@WeekendWrenchTurner , it's not that hard really after watching your vid. But for an extra 100 bucks I'll let some chinaman build mine. 🤣

    I could not find the parts for my Jeep except on eBay I think they are cheap Chinese parts.

    This looks like a much better system than the Witts End bushing press set.

    Did my mine, now my e brake is not working and brakes pedals seem funny. Think the problem is the e brake adjuster. But great video this helps a bunch!!

      Crank it and release it about 100 times. That'll get the self adjuster to do it's job 👍

    The back and forth between horizontal and vertical is distracting annoying, disorienting and serves no purpose. Why did you not replace the hydraulic brake cylinder? Given a few bucks and a few minutes seems like this would "refresh" the brakes completely.

      Those early videos were rough! I had recently replaced the cylinders about 2 years earlier, so there was no need. Rebuilt the OEMs and spares🤟 Thanks for watching!
