More honeybees foraging among the California poppies in the alleyway
It's fall and the honeybees are in full force collecting as much nectar and pollen before winter hits. I'm not sure if California poppies are their first choice if there are other types of flowers. I suspect not. It's probably near the bottom of the list along with marigolds. I know the bumblebees only visit the marigolds when nothing else is available. Fortunately this year I seeded the alleyway with wildflowers and the California poppies seemed to take a foothold. They were able to withstand the heatwave and drought we experienced this summer.

I was tired of seeing dandelions and other weeds so I sowed California poppy seeds in the alleyway in the spring time. There was a rush of colour in June/July. I didn't expect a second bloom in late August. An added bonus is the poppies are attracting tons of honeybees to the backyard.
Bumblebees everywhere

I stepped outside at around 5pm today to discover so many bumblebees buzzing around the garden. They were attracted to the veronica plant. Only a few years ago I thought their numbers were declining. Fortunately I was proven wrong. Oddly enough, this year has seen fewer honeybees than previous years.

Manually pollinating flowers of frankensquash. I call these frankensquash as they are 2nd generation plants. F2 hybrids from spaghetti squash cross pollinated with zucchini.

It's been many years since I've seen these creatures in the yard so I was pretty happy to come across this little guy. Looking at his size, I figure he has been eating well.
Cutworm damage

Based on google search, this appears to be a pale western cutworm that are common in Saskatchewan and Alberta. It mowed down this beet seedling in one night. After it has fed which is at night, it will bury itself in the soil to protect itself from predators like birds.

Came across several glassy cutworm while digging up dandelions in the alley. In 2020 it was a plague of locusts. 2021 was cabbage moths. Is 2022 the year of cutworms? Sigh. What's a gardener to do?
Bees ASMR

This was the first time I had observed bees drinking water. There were other sources of water in the garden, but the bees seem to be attracted to the peat moss pellets. I'm not sure why they prefer drinking from the peat moss, but it was fascinating to watch. I did notice that when I moved the seed tray, it took some time for them to find it again despite it being a few meters from the original...

This is the 3rd year I have been growing water lily in a tub. This variety is called hardy, which have been bred to survive the less than tropical climates of Canada. I've been able to overwinter the plants by putting them in the refrigerator. Time lapse was set to 1/10 fps.

The hardware portion of the solar tracker project is complete and this is the initial test of the linear actuator. The specification rating of the actuator is: (1) 300 lbs of force, (2) arm movement speed is 5.7mm/s (3) IP rating is IP65.

Thanks for your hardwork on how to add free heat to a home. I really enjoy finding great ways to heat your home for fee. I would like for you to take a look at this guys work. I used his idea but I ran wires to 4 different locations in my house and I get a lot of free heat from this guys idea. I hope you enjoy watching his method of heating a house. It's a creamic heater with a 2 watt fan and only uses about 72 watts which he hooks up to his solar panel. Good luck my friend. My question is your choice of fan? A lower cfm fan would slow down the heat draw and leave the air temperature higher during the day.
my tank is in my bedroom and i used to use an old ass topfin 30 that would start rattling and make noises i never even thought concievable in the middle of the night. woke up crying one morning because i was so tired and went to buy one of these and,,, it's still loud! on the topfin i ran it with the lid off, had to use a rubber band to hold the intake in place and stop it from rattling, and had a plastic bottle baffle on the front. motor was old as shit, not much to do about that for this one im making a new baffle but the motor is also loud. my lid doesn't rattle but it makes the noise echo somehow, it's godawful. what lubricant did you use?

A quick note to cut down on confusion. This is an active solar heater. Passive solar doesn't rely on any mechanical aspects (fans or pumps).

Could we make the same system 1,5 M tall and use convection to have cold air entering the heater in the bottom and hot air going back in the room in the top ?
You could, but if the heat exchanger is working well, the forced air flow from the fans will improve the throughput of warm air going through the device. Also, probably the device is limited to a temperature delta/change so if the device is only capable of increasing the input vs output temp by ~25-39 degrees, you’ll have improved performance by using ‘preheated’ interior air as the input air vs much colder exterior air.
@@Stormsteed Thanks. My idea was actually to take air from the interior (so preheated) and put it back in the interior. But just to use convection and the fact that the hot air tend to be at the top. I think the througput of air doesn't matter much, if the air go slower it will be heated more, so same energy
@@wulfhart2653 I think you need at least one fan to move the air through to take advantage of the heat exchange effect of the box. Think about your hot attic in the summer. You may have open vents in the roof, but the removal of hot air from your attic is greatly improved if you install fan(s).

Cudos on the build. When I built one of these I only had one input port and forced the air to traverse the entire unit keeping it under the sun longer and achieving a higher temperature output. Of course as soon as you put a fan on it the length of time is shortened and the temperature will drop. Trying ti find the sweet spot of temperature and flow is the challenge. I perhaps would have either forgone the fan or put it on a speed control. The second idea was pure genius.

I wonder if just having the black aluminium perforated sheets suction cupped to the inside of the window would offer any heat... without the fans and boxes, and if so, would they cause more cold at night?
the black sheet is a black body absorbing solar radiation and would generate the same amount of heat whether it is sandwiched between two sheets of glass or on the inside as you suggested. and no they would not cause more cold at night.
@@rifhc TY for your reply, now I have one other question, if that sheet collects the same amount of heat with or with out being contained, would NOT having any black body, absorb the same amount of heat through the window into the room, pretty much back to where we started? @@dojodance When sunlight shines on an object (specifically long wavelengths, infrared), it causes the molecules to vibrate and thereby the object gives off heat. Heat is simply a byproduct. The object can reflect or absorb the radiation depending on material and colour. Remember light is simply radiation just like x-rays, but at different frequencies. If you want to try a simple experiment, go outside and stand in the sunlight with a white t-shirt on. Then try on a black t-shirt. You should be able to feel a difference in temperature between the two. If you don't have a black sheet of aluminum in front of the window, the light will be absorbed by various materials in the room. The objects will reflect and absorb the sunlight differently and consequently emit different amounts of heat. So by placing a black object that has good absorption properties in the direct sunlight we can try to maximize the heat generated. Does this answer your question?
Putting it inside the window won't help at all because that heat is already inside the house as long as the curtains are open. It needs to go outside, somewhere where it's not blocking a window. Putting the perforated aluminum between the panes will increase losses. Put your hand in front of the exposed glass, and your other hand behind the aluminum and tell me which feels warmer. Also, you're not looking for the highest possible exhaust temps, but best thermal output, which is achieved by more airflow. Looks like good build quality though.
It will still work because of the black paint but it won't work as well as not blocking the window

It'll *work* in that you can put it in a sunbeam and it gets warm, but it won't *help* because that solar energy was already inside the house. If you put this in a glass box outside and blow house air through it, then it'll help. I'm not trying to be snarky. What is unclear?
Wouldn’t that also work with newer windows or one to put a piece of plexiglass over the recessed window box with pixie glass and an N put a hole in and out put a hole cut into a top and bottom respectively in the panel the middle of the aluminum panel in between the window in the way of the pixie glass over the recessed window pane area

The level of water in your tank is way too low for the breeder box to pull water efficiently. That’s your problem.

Perhaps that is not what passive means in this case. The fan is on or off in this heater. In active heater there would be some thermostates, maybe timers and some other automation. That's what makes it "active".

@Mikowacomet Just a clarification. Active in my mind is the act of expending energy to generate heat. Like burning wood or conducting electricity through metal coils to produce heat. By placing a black body in direct sunlight to produce heat is passive. You are correct that the fans are not passive. When I was using the term passive, it was not meant to describe distributing the heat with the fans. The fans are definitely active. Sorry for the confusion.

Go buy "3 in one" oil. It's totally NOT safe for any of your pets but a motor is a motor and it needs to be lubricated. What you do is , just put a one teeny tiny little drop on to the shaft and let it run down. Than do a S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedure) like when you would "charge" a canister filter with diatomaceous. That procedure is.... in a separate bucket from your aquarium, run your filter for 15 min, dump water because you'll have a little oil slick moving around . Do that again with fresh water for another 15 min or so. Now you have a nice lubrication and 90% of that oil run off has been taken out of the equation. You should also remove any media , sponges and filters while doing this. Once everything is up and running as usual you might see a little oil in the aquarium. All you do is use any technique you would use to remove normal protein oils . One way to do this is "displacement" . In other words go get ladle or pint container or whatever and gently dip it into the areas of concern just like you would remove fat from a chicken stock. Another technique is to simply drop a piece of blank paper from your printer on top of the aquarium water surface, wait two seconds and remove paper , discard paper in trash . Repeat this till you feel satisfied. It's more quick , more easy and less expensive than buying a slimmer filter (another freakin rip off). When you use jellies on moving mechanics you will eventually get so much gunk the bearings will freeze up . All that petroleum jelly is just aquafor anyway. In this particular case jellies could make things even worse. Keep in mind almost all these filter motors are magnetic . The thicker your lubricant the more disruption to the magnetic field .

You mentioned that they won't start back up if the power goes out. That occasionally happens, but by no means all the time. When it does you don't need to clean the impeller or remove the intake tube. Instead just move the intake tube over to the side, like you'd do if you want to reduce the flow, then stick a toothpick or small wooden skewer in there and jiggle the impeller. That will get it going, then move the intake tube back.
