Picking a career is tough, but then you have to actually put in the work to START THAT CAREER. Thus, the inspiration for this channel.
Follow along as I share my experience making that transition, and the lessons I've learned through mistakes and successes. Topics to be covered include the college application process, getting through college as an engineering student, the internship and job application process, career professional development, and future planning.
Let's make better decisions together!
I'm graduated college with an ABET accredited engineering degree from a small liberal arts school. I'm a registered EIT and a member of the Order of the Engineer. I've held memberships in IEEE, SWE, and ASME, and aspire to become a Professional Engineer. Currently, I work in Commercial Management for a large EPC firm. My opinions are my own and do not reflect those of my employer.

Excel The Ultimate Tool for Engineers You Must Master
I am going back to school at 44. I am taking 13 credit hours this Spiring and that sounds like a lot.
Especially if you’re also working full time…
@ENGRingSuccess I am working part-time(12 hrs per week)and I am actually taking 12 credit hours. Introduction to Programming 4, Linear Algebra 3, Introduction to Meteorology 3, and Piano Literature II 2. All my classes are 2 days a week and on Monday and Wednesday. I will be commuting 120 to 150 miles per week over those 2 days.
Amazing. I love that so much. I wish you the absolute best in success in this pursuit! This is so fun!
I would say taking 18 college credit hours is insane. I know for me it is. I would be put into a straight jacket and in asylum if I even attempted it. This one complete lunatic that wrote on reddit took 28 credit hours. How in God's name he did it I have no clue. Type it in a Google search and will find it quickly.
I saw that post. I think I might have even reacted to it on the podcast. ABSOLUTELY WILD. If not, drop the link and I'll react on an episode of the podcast!
In the fall of 2025 I am taking Data Structures I, Discrete Structures I, and Introduction to Advanced Mathematics. In the spring of 2026 I am taking Introduction to Digital Design, Advanced Calculus I, and Discrete Structures II. Both of those semesters are only 10 hours but them 3 classes are very challenging. In the Spring of 2025 I am taking Introduction to Programming, Linear Algebra, Art Appreciation, and Magic, Witchcraft and Religion. So 13 hours and 4 classes.
LOTS of credits.
12 credit hours is also full-time and should be in the light load category.
Yes! Did I miss that? 12 was the minimum to be full time at my university in undergrad
@@ENGRingSuccess yeah it should be like <12 credits is part-time, 12-14 credits is a light load, 15-16 is a normal load, 17 to 18 credits is a heavy load and >18 is insane. 12 to 14 credit hours in a semester for me would feel like a pretty heavy load. 14 credit hours is my threshold and will not be exceeded under any circumstances.
@ I should’ve had 12 in the light load category if I said otherwise I misspoke

To finish this video's thought calculations on the 40 hour workweek and hourly wage: 52 week / 1 year x 40 hour / 1 week = 2160 hour / 1 year $35,000 / 1 year x 1 year / 2160 hour = $35,000 / 2160 hour = ~$16.20 / 1 hour But "Full-Time" is ambiguous as it is a Range. The absolute minimum hours to be considered full-time is outlined by the IRS which sets the standard at at least 130 hours per month (~30hrs 10min per week). The average full-time employee in the US works 1,892 hours per year (36hrs 24min per week). Of course, there is no upper limit to what a Full-time could entail only that anything over 44 hours a week is overtime. **1892 hour per year average:** 1892 hour / 1 year $35,000 / 1 year x 1 year / 1892 hour = $35,000 / 1892 hour = ~$18.50 / 1 hour **Best case with minimum hours as Full-Time:** 130 hour / 1 month x 12 month / 1 year = 1560 hour / 1 year $35,000 / 1 year x 1 year / 1560 hour = $35,000 / 1560 hour = ~$22.43 / 1 hour
thanks for the math!

"Engineer - a person who gets excited about things that no one else cares about" - Interesting Engineering Engineers take the things that no one else cares about to solve the problems of the world and create things that people do care about. - Doug Hohulin "85% of economic growth was attributed to technological change in the period 1890 to 1950. ... almost all economic growth in the last 120-plus years was from technology." -Byron Reese "I think we're going to live in a world where there are going to be hundreds of millions, billions of different AI agents. Eventually probably more AI agents than there are people in the world" - Mark Zuckerberg It will be interesting to see what problems of the world can be solved by Engineers using AI to solve them.
I got a BSEE at Purdue and even though I had a 5.66 GPT (Purdue graded on a logarithmic 6 point scale - the logarithmic is a joke but the 6 point scale is not) there were many times I thought about switching majors before graduating. I was in a Co-op program that really helped me. After working for 7 years in engineering, I did a lot more bus dev and strategy work. I am now working on AI projects “When the AI System Has to Be Right" AI in Regulation/Governance/Policy, Healthcare, Road Safety/AV, Education and Energy. My recommendation to engineering students is to leverage AI to help with the theory, also find study groups to help you work together on tough problems.
Simple. Engineering school is very demanding.
My granddaughter is starting her senior year at UMich College of Engineering majoring in chemical engineering and is carrying a 3.875 GPA. Hey, whats your opinion on engineering technician programs, they are usually 2 year programs.
If you don’t have career direction otherwise, it’s probably not too significant an investment and can help you get into a technician role. I’d imagine you don’t really need one to get an entry level technician role, but it could set you apart from others with no associates degree. If it’s not too expensive for you to stomach and you want a overview into the industry, I’d definitely consider it, especially if the program does a good job of maintaining industry connections in your area and placing students in jobs. It won’t lead to an engineering job, and likely won’t cover many pre-requisites required to get an engineering degree, so keep that in mind if your end role is to become an Engineer.
I say this to say, I’m not extremely familiar with them, but I like how a lot of technician/community college programs have industry partners to help place their students. That’s a really cool thing.
@@ENGRingSuccess thanks for the reply. Yea i really dont, got a diploma as a paralegal and now trying to switch. The program i am looking at is electromechanical technician with an optional co-op. I am still trying to see if its the right choice. I am mostly interested in robotics, do you think this type of program is good for getting a foot in the door, for just even fixing robotics no even the engineering aspect of it.
@@So.10101 definitely, especially if they have a co-op program already with the company that hires. Maybe also reach out directly to the company and get their take on the value of the program and the co-op program.
Great video
That’s a good idea, the only thing I would suggest is keep the intro call to 2-5 minutes. If your industry is that niche and you are a high demand professional, you could be spending hours completing these calls during, what sounds like, time outside of your current occupation. If you had 6 calls in a week or even 10 a month, that’s 5-10 hours in a month completing these calls and then having to serve as a consultant. However, if you’re just getting into consulting, I highly recommend this approach to attract new clients. Also, ensure that you have a good contract or terms for payment when you do ask for payment as a consultant.
I'm in Mechatronics and to advice a person not to do Mechatronic Engineering is an ignorance of the future industry.
I think the work is great and the industry is there but that it’s unnecessary to specialize to get those roles. Recruiters and HR teams generally just aren’t there yet. I think the coursework is valuable but you can take similar coursework and get an EE OR ME major. Thanks for watching the video and offering your experience. I’m happy to hear more about if I’m wrong here with this take…

Unfortunately most companies only stick to the pay structure that the BOD approves. So I’m in my 6th year and I just found out that a 1 year employee is making more than me. I have many years of experience before this job, and she is about 30 years younger than me. The company doesn’t really care how good you are at your job, only that your pay stays within the min and max. Good points made in the video as well.

Charlie kirk, swing and miss on this. He may have had a point with humanities and liberal arts degrees, however engineering is another level. Civil engineers need the full 3 years minimum and more industry experience to be effective, other engineering disciples like chemical and electronical more so.
"Blue collar to white collar... SOME ADVICE" is a good title as well. you want to make your titles a little more simple and clear to understand. it will help drive more traffic to the videos unfortunately, the titles matter just as much as the content, even if the content is really good and thought out. I only found this video because I searched up "things i wish i knew before my white collar job" which is more specific. then blue collar to white collar transition
Thanks so much! I’ve already updated the title
I've been going through it lately. I have achieved transfer requirements to get into a University's EE program, but backed out of it because I don't feel ready. My calculus and physics skills are lackluster, and I don't love programming. A part of me thinks a trade with the hands-on nature of it may be better suited for me. However, this has been my goal for so long that I remain in this state of limbo.
I'm sorry you've been going through it lately. What calculus and physics courses have you taken so far? Why do you think your skills are lackluster? I think it's okay to try something and see if it's for you or not. You'll never know unless you try!
I hope from watching the video you got the same sentiment that I've shared in my comment.
@@ENGRingSuccess I went through calculus 1-3, linear algebra, and then differential equations. I passed all of them, but I'd be lying if I said I recall how to use eigenvectors/values, do more than intermediate integration, grasp hyperbolic trig functions, or identify an ODE by type and then solve it. Also, I did terrible on my physics exams for mechanics and electromagnetism. Never practicing enough or grasping the why. The identification of what processes I need to do to solve a problem in physics (applied math) always got me. I love math and physics, but not enough to do an engineering program. Not to mention my lack of interest in computer science coding. This was all done during my last two years of highschool and another year after graduation with a general associates/HS diploma. Also, COVID made the first two years of highschool mean nothing given the abrupt online curriculum. So, currently, I am moving into a cardiovascular technician program at a different community college that offers it. I'm really excited since it ticks my boxes and has decent earning potential.
When I was in college there were well known "gate courses" which were intended to weed out the weakest students. It was like an evolutionary survival of the fittest. But if you survived they did not try to fail you in senior year. You still had to work hard, but if you passed the gate courses you should be able to make it. - AE88, Georgia Tech.
Similar experience. Once you were a junior or senior, our department really wanted to work with the students that had made it that far. Less hard for students that were dropping out before the end of the first semester of their sophomore year.

i feel like i could have gotten through it in 3 yrs but long term retainage of material would be horrible. that being said, if we specialized the degrees further ie mechanical engineer only do structural or thermo then it’d be possible
3 years maybe… but 1.5… IMPOSSIBLE .
Engineering is tough and not so well rewarded, you'll acheive little more than an average salary for great deal of hard work. ALSO, once graduated you really can't share your knowledge with friends & family because they don't understand what you know! ... unlike say philosophy, english, business studies which most people can identify with ... Engineering is a introvert's career, where personal satifaction is a lonely pursuit.
Maybe so... if you take the "introvert's" career path. But that's the same for any career, if you just want to work your job as an individual contributor and don't try to aggressively move up in career and responsibility, you're just not going to make much more than average salary.
@@ENGRingSuccess Oh really, it's not so simple ... you can be an excellent engineer, but the only way to improve your salary is to chase a management job which is not hands-on engineering, it's people manipulation cause and effect. One of the most important aspects of any technical career is to ensure that once you have the basic education and minimum experience you make sure you become self-employed (or run your own company as a director) to enjoy the fruits of success. Engineering for employees is a dead-duck, you remain on an average salary irrespective of your contribution ... as a nice worker!
You're right that engineering as an employee has limitations on increases to earning potential. I think that's the experience in general when being an employee, you're a commodity either for revenue or overhead and profits must be maximized on commodities and overheads must be kept down. I think the entrepreneurship route is definitely the way to making lucrative money. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

Howdy. Yes. I would like to mention another possibility. Somewhere along the line students may realise the job security is below average in engineering, though good engineers may make six figres. Regards.
I'd say the security can be good or not good. Maybe less good in consulting/EPC work, but in house engineers have decent stability.
I am a boomer now retired. In our day, we had much more job stability and layoffs were less common. I lasted 20 years at my 1st company. Nowadays, if the company has a bad quarter, and management is afraid of telling wall street for their own survival, they prepare a 'cost reduction plan' as a response. I agree with this young man. If the company cannot provide job stability, you have to provide your own stability...and that means taking risks and new opportunities when they become available to you. The company has gone 100% financial, so you should too.
Hey Mike, thanks so much for the comment and the kind words :)
