Awesome Demo Lance!
Thanks so much Chris! ☺
Hi Lance, great playing. Did you go with the medium or jumbo frets?
Thanks! They have medium frets.
@@LanceKonnerth Thank you!
Cool tone, cool playin’ but if you wear a strap that guitar would NOT flip flop and teeter-totter annoyingly.
What is the color of this beauty??
What is the color on this beauty??
Charcoal Frost is the color
Still the video that makes me want a Serus J more than any other.
Thank you Grant! 😊It's a versatile , inspiring instrument for sure!
@@LanceKonnerth your playing is inspiring!
Sounds good to me.
Thanks!!
Sir every piece from you is amazing! Plz come back with new videos
Thank you very much! 😀 Nice of you to say that.. I'll be working on some new stuff soon.
What set of pickups are in this guitar?
What pickups are in this NOVO TC?
what strat is that annd what lollar ? nice tone!
Thanks!! It's a mutt strat, the neck is from GVCG and body is from 30th Guitars NYC. Pickups are Lollar Blackface from around 2009.
Love your playing!
Thank you ! 😄
Great playing! Which do you find more versatile the Throwbaks or GFs? I already own a Strat, Tele, and JM type with Lollar Firebirds. Are the Throwbaks good clean? I’d love to hear that in isolation. Most Theowbak clips have a lot of gain. Cheers!
Thanks so much!! 😀Well...I find them both pretty versatile, but they are quite different styles of pickups. A classic humbucker vs a GF which is more stringy sounding with a hi fi kinda thing on the top end. The difference between the two is gonna be based more on the inherent design difference between them, than the nuances of pickup builder/brand. That said, I've been very happy with the Throbaks and they definitely stand out among the various humbuckers brands that I've owned thru the years, though I've only had these in that particular Novo. I think they work great for clean as well, specifically since this model is on the mid to low output side of things. Pretty sure I have a video of them on my channel where it's clean or "cleaner".
too bad you used tremolo.
That nasty bridge pickup edge of breakup is tasty.
Thanks!!! I dig it too, responds well to volume knob adjustments.
Dial in just the right amount of gain that way. Cool. Those are the Fralin modern PAFs?
@@kristopherk5454 They are Throbak pickups which came stock w the guitar, back in 2018. But yeah, I think any decent pickup could achieve that with that kinda combination and approach.
You play like me 😊
GREAT PLAYING BRO!
Thank you! 😊
Overrated Guitar try a fender jazz master
Like these guitars but not the relic look
Which one is your fav?
Hard to say. Kinda depends upon what I'm using them for at the time. Fortunate to have and like them all.
Hi Lance, I’m thinking about picking up a novo with the same pickups as this one. Lollar T and Goldfoil. I’m up in the air on this one, Fralins or a TC. Love your tone!
Thanks Jeff! I'm not exactly sure your question? Yes this one has a Lollar goldfoil in the neck, but the bridge is Amalfitano. This Novo T is from 2016 when they used those before the now standard Lollar or Fralin. However, I've used those brands bridge pickups in other guitars thru the years and they are solid as well. The Novo TC is similar but main difference is the chopped tele bridge and it's routed for humbuckers. Hope that helps. 😀
Would also look at fender Jaguar and jazz master
Good God the German carve is so pretty on that Novo
I dig it, they know how to make a fine instrument!
Soo deep warm sound, super!
Thanks so much!!!
I’m not worthy
❤absolutely so well said❤
🙏Thank you! 😊
this was one of the better videos showcasing some lollars...
Thanks so much! I appreciate that 😊🙏
Nice song. Like the feel and the playing. Backdrop is also pretty great.
Thank you so much!! 😊 I appreciate you checking it out. Yes, I agree, the mountains make for a great backdrop.
Anyone wanting a Novo before watching this video will certainly want one afterwards....
Hey thanks!! That's really cool of you to say :) Yes, they are great guitars and quite versatile.
Do you find the p90s noisy?
Not really any more or less than the other traditional P90's I've played. They are similar to Strat single coil hum, but maybe a little more depending upon the environment. If you put toggle switch in the middle then then they hum cancel at least in that position.
Looks like the Lollar Blackface sound best , when they are set a bit higher than other pickups . Nice tone from you !
Thank you!! yeah I dig em, and just set them where I like it, no real rhyme or reason, other than making sure they seem balanced and aren't too high to mess with the string pull.
the Experience sounds wild, great instrumental
Thanks so much!! Yeah that pedal is one of my all time favorites!
Hey Lance :) My Serus J arrived today and t's instanlty my favorite - and finest - guitar! Thanks againf for your wonderful videos .. especially this one.
Congrats! That's awesome to hear! 😊🎶What specs did you end up getting? And thanks, 🙏I'm glad you like my videos, got some more in the works as well.
@@LanceKonnerth Great to hear that! It's ice metallic blue over three color sunburst, with Lollar gold foils. Medium relicing, extremely well done. As yo already know, the neck is sublime. Can't put it down.
@@lorenzo-agnes Ahh that's a great combo right there! Sounds like a winner! yeah I dig the gold foils and Novo necks are excellent. Enjoy!!
That's clearly a very nice sound. I'm having trouble getting a nice fuzz tone from my Gibson SG standard. Bridge pickup into a Super Badass variac fuzz. Sounds great on my strat, but muddy on SG. Any thoughts?
Thanks so much!! Well I'm not familiar with that particular fuzz pedal, but getting the tone one is looking for is generally about the pairing of the specific guitar/pickups/pedal/amp...and so sometimes just altering one part of that can radically change how we like and perceive something. Fuzz pedals in particular are super sensitive to the impedance of the guitar being feed into them. Your Strat has quite different pickups than a humbucker Gtr like the SG and most likely different value pots. Commonly 250 in single coil gtrs and 500 w humbuckers, so all that is gonna play a big part as to the tone and especially interaction as you adjust the volume pot. You could, adjust the SG bridge pu a little lower on the bass side to lessen the low end & clean up mud, or adjust the amp and pedal side of things & just play around with the available tone controls on case by case basis. It's not super realistic to think that the same settings will work perfectly for 2 very different style gtrs. So I say turn knobs, and just experiment. Hope that helps!
Incredible. What amp and pedals?
Thanks!! For this one I just used a Kemper, no pedals.
@@LanceKonnerth silly question but do you know the “relic/distress” level on your guitar? Light? Medium?
@@douglassawyer6978 I don't know, this is an earlier one from 2017 when Dennis was doing the relic work and they hadn't put the range section on the spec sheets yet.
@@LanceKonnerth thanks. If you ever want to sell it, let me know!
Mine should be here by Friday. I’m so excited. Killer tone brother.
Thanks!! and congrats on the new Novo! Hope you like them as much as I do.
This gain tone cuts so well through the mix!...is it usable for chords etc because from other videos i have seen it gets kinda "boomy"...also, would you say it sits somewhere between a marshall and a dumble tonally? Thx!
Thank you!! Yes, I like the way it worked here. That amp definitely has a lot of big low end, but there's a few factors at work here which probably account for why it's less boomy. I'm using the click channel of the amp which is voiced different than the main reverb channel which a lot of people tend to use. I love that channel too, but it tends to have more bass and more of a big fender, brown or tweed type of sound with a little black face as well and a slower attack than the click channel which is quicker and much more gain with a tighter bass when tone is set all way left click. This channel has more of an old Marshall bark kinda thing going on but also kinda it's own gain quality. No master so just more gain as you turn it up. Second, the cab makes a huge difference. I have the matching 2x12 which is great, but it's open back and way different than the 4x12 V30 closed back cab used here with a tighter and more focused attack. Actually for this clip it's a 4x12 IR in a Suhr load box but still way different than going thru the D13 matching cab. And finally that gtr and bridge pickup are really great and help w the focused cutting thing. Oh and yes it works great for chords too, harmonic and rich, when set right, but depends on what you're going for. Thanks for listening!
@@LanceKonnerth thx!...very detailed info ... I have listened to this clip again and again.. sounds a bit Voxy too I think ... I can’t really place it...somewhere between a Marshall / vox and a bit of dumble ( because of the harmonics?!) and the playing of course is just great!
@@constantinecosmas2557 Ha! Thanks for the views, and glad you dig it! Yes, there's a bit of Vox thing too, the midrange has some of that quality. Never played a Dumble, but many years ago did play a tweed bassman reissue that he had modified. I still think about it, was so good!!
Nice work! Dig that track too 😄
Hey! Thanks so much!!! 🙏😊
Forget the guitar what a beautifully composed piece of music
Hey Sam! Thank you so much! 😊Happy to hear you enjoy the music.
Looks and sounds amazing....Just need to sell a ton of gear, so I can get a Novo!
Thank you!! 😊Yeah they've gone up, I got this back in 2017, much less than today, but I love it and highly recommend them.
Beautiful playing man. Thinking of getting one of these. Cheers from Oz.
Thanks so much!! I've been really happy with this guitar so far.
Come on man.
Which Novak pickups are these? Sounds fantastic!
Thanks! They are based on lipstick pickups, but humbucking. I think they were pretty much specifically for Novo, but they don't offer them anymore. But you could contact Curtis Novak and he can pretty much make anything you want.
@@LanceKonnerth Awesome thank you!
Pickups sound great, but the player must have something to do with it. I'm getting a Miris J guitar. The big question is Fralin Alnico P-90s or these Lollar Gold Foils. I'm likely going for the classic P-90 sound. Any preferences?
Thanks! Well... P90's and Gold foils are very different. I like both and have p90's in my Serus J. To my ears, Gold foils have more of a hi-fi thing in terms of range, almost like a hyper Strat pickup with extreme glassy highs and then deep lows. yet also kinda lo-fi in a unique way, especially w gain tones. The P90's have a lot of range too, good for blues, rock, jazz, etc...really anything, but they come across bolder and stronger. Less tamed and can grind more. Another thing if you aren't familiar with them is they can be rather noisy especially with higher gain. Much more than a tele or Strat pu. But I'm not familiar with the Fralin P90's specifically and know they also have a hum cancelling version if that's a concern. Though any hum cancelling version of a single coil pu that I've ever tried is a little bit of a compromise compared to the traditional/hum version. Congrats on the Miris, keep me posted!
@@LanceKonnerth thanks for the info!
Sounds so nice!
Thank you!! 🙏😊
Do you recall what the color is of this one?
It's ice blue metallic over a 3-tone sunburst.
@@LanceKonnerth thanks!!
Lance!! Super tasty playing and absolutely dreamy tone. You have such a sophisticated and elegant touch to your playing this was a real treat. Are those the Amalfitano's? Sounds airier and more dynamic than the Fralins.
Hey thank you so much!!! 🙏That's really nice of you to say 😊Means a lot! Yes, they are Amalfitano's and I would definitely describe them as you said. They are also a little on the hot side imo but also really sweet and somehow work really well with clean and dirty. I haven't owned Fralin p90's but have had Lollar and Gibson P90's and prefer these, but then again it's also the guitar and pine body, plus the mastery bridge all have a big impact on the overall tone.
@@LanceKonnerthI'll definitely be buying a Kemper soon too. If there are any profiles you can recommend to help me explore similar sonic landscapes, I'm all ears.
@@turbophat Cool! Well...this entire track was done w just the Serus J and my Kemper. I used my own profiles for much of it, tone hawk profiles (shameless plug) 🤣and you can find them at tonehawkstudios.com All the effects: delays, modulation, etc...were also from the Kemper, but those aren't really attached to my profiles. I usually just turn knobs and adjust the parameters of both effects and eq on the profiles until it sits in the particular track that I'm working on. I profiled amps that I've owned and used a lot so I'm familiar with them as a starting point. The final mix then had some general overall comp/limiting and eq for exporting. Hope that helps :)
Hey Lance, That is absolutely some Beautiful Sounds coming out of those hands. Looking to get into my 1st Novo and stumbled on this. So Glad I did and already listened to almost All Your Videos. Just Flat Out Awesome. Love Your Playing and Inspiring Tones !!!
