How to Jump Set in Volleyball
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.День назад
Jump setting helps us shorten the distance of the set to the middle blocker, which helps us set an even faster tempo ball, it can help us create a flatter trajectory to the pin, and when the setter is front row jump setting makes blockers consider the setter as a threat. These are some of the many reasons why jump setting is a must at the collegiate level and beyond. This video breaks down prop...
JUMP FLOAT SERVE tips you're NOT prioritizing

A jump float serve is one of the toughest serves to pass because it moves quickly and drops. We break down the footwork and toss for a jump float serve, teaching you when to toss and how to develop a cadence.
Simple FOOTWORK DRILL even PROS do!

Keys to the SHORT SERVE (psst.... be unpredictable)
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.Месяц назад
Short serving is similar to deep serving, with small changes in the toss and contact point. We contact the ball earlier and toss the ball slightly more toward our body. These differences should be small enough that the passers can't tell the difference until the ball leaves your hand.

We see the most variability in passing finish. In this video we break down the correct technique for arms, body, legs and shoulders. We cover common incorrect moves and the reason behind the body mechanics for the correct moves. One of our favorite drills will help you get the feeling and concept we're looking for!
Textbook STANDING FLOAT SERVE coming your way!
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
The main objectives of the standing float serve are to put speed on the ball and get it to move sporadically through the air. Similar to a knuckleball in baseball, the art of the serve is in the server’s ability to mix the floating aspect with speed and location so the serve-receivers are unsure of its final location and who should be taking it.
How to 'absorb' the power of the ball with FEEL

A lot of you were probably taught to "absorb" hard driven balls by bringing your arms back intentionally to your body. In this video, we explore ways to lessen the power we put on the volleyball.

Pivot Step: For Setters Getting Outside of the their Range
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.5 месяцев назад
The pivot step helps us handle out of system and medium pass balls effectively. By using a pivot step we can get our body around the ball and finish square to target. No need to get 'around the ball' in these places because the goal is to square up eventually.
One of my best kept SECRETS to passing
Просмотров 5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
At the highest levels, the standard concepts will only get you so far, and with harder serves and more float to the ball, we have to create and make up angles to adjust. So many players want a 1 size fits all technique but the HIP SWITCH and other skills allow for last second adjustments to pass consistently. Try this one out!
Setting Technique with an Easy DRILL to Immediately Improve
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Using a cone is a great visual cue for working on setting hand placement. The cone forces us to keep our hands flat through the point of contact, and the height of the cone represents the correct distance from our head for contacting the ball.

Shot Selection for High Volleyball IQ
Просмотров 9 тыс.8 месяцев назад
When thinking about hitting shots on the outside we want to be able to play the odds to help put our team in the best situation. That’s not always going for the kill but rather putting the ball in play or to a spot to allow our team to play defense in a higher percentage scenario. Often times the ball from the setter’s hands dictates that last second choice you make.

Love this video. Really clearly showing what you can be looking for and how to react! Excellent visual examples to explain!!
Really good explanation, but holy crap, that field feels cramped (and dangerous) with that column there!
Love this video. Question. I coach 14U girls team. Where is the setter? Usually have a setter in the front row, but my setters are not tall enough to block. Do I set up in the back? Asking how I would get three taller for blocks and avoid my setter defending hit with the first hit.
Can yall make a proper guide on opposite as well?
As for the tip at 1:49. I was told by a friend that outside hitter should not cover tips on the right side because its dangerous as I could collide with back defender but it feels natural to me and have successfully covered many times. I never cover past the ten foot line, only super short balls. What are your thoughts?
Amazing explanations and just incredibly useful.
Awesome setting tips 🫶
So when you pass seems right and your leftside is in front row, you want her to pass that seem and then still get out to hit?
There’s no perfect solution, especially when you take into account the serve and your personnel. We do have to prioritize the pass quality over a couple feet of approach though. If you have a libero next to the OH you can have the lib take more. Or if the OH isn’t a very good passer, you can hide them closer to the line and make them pass on their body and to the sideline while the passer to their right takes more.
idk why but this was incredibly satisfying
@@ballwbj hahaha we are biased but feel the same way 🤣

I have a consistent topspin jump serve, but it’s not very hard for the defensive players to receive-they don’t seem to struggle with it. How can I make my serve harder to receive? Should I add more power? If so, how?
Without seeing it, you'll likely need to toss the ball in front and try to treat the serve like an attack. If you have space in your gym, try to create a 4 step approach, toss the ball so it lands 5 feet in the court and try to hit it hard to the last 3 feet of the opponent's court. Some players, like me (haha), don't have a super strong arm to really crush it, so moving the ball around into spots with good pace can also be successful.
Do you think, as a setter, in order to surpass other setters, I should focus on having very consistent setting skills, or would being an all-around setter be more useful? In the short term, is it better to prioritize great hands and ball positioning, or becoming a well-rounded player? Thank you so much for sharing this vulnerable content.
Good question! I think having great location and good connection with your hitters is more important than serving, blocking and defense. You'll see small setters on the court because setting up the attackers is more important for coaches than a big block. So I would work on your location from all around zone 3 (perfect passes to passes on the 10ft/3m line). Then if you're playing more because of your good setting.... you'll get better at block/defense/serve. Good luck!
Is this at Dive VBC? If so that’s my club lol
You know it! The best!
Nice 🫡
Thanks 🙏
JUMP SETTING PLEASE
Next week! Hope you can wait a little longer!! 🙌
Is it ok to learn to set fast from the start as a beginner?
Tricky question: if a beginner is setting fast they are likely using their fingers too much. I would spend a lot of time on feeling the ball come in and out of your hands. As the wrists gets better, I would speed up the ball and lower the trajectory. The wrists are the most important and they should dictate the speed and height. Plus.. If you’re a beginner then you’re probably playing with beginners. So they wouldn’t be able to hit your fast sets if you did.
Shouldn't you be hitting it at your highest instead of continuously hitting it?
No, not necessarily. Your ability to hit the ball at different levels, with different body positions and different arm speeds is the key. This drill allows you to make those decisions quickly like you would when you react to a set, the block and the situation.
Is loop more of a 32 than a 31?
Yup. Some teams now are even just setting a “bad Go set” on purpose. A set that looks like a Go but dies in and the hitter is ready for it
This is the channel I’ve been searching for
Welcome!
How do we order some of your cool tee shirts?
We’ll look into it! Glad you like them!
Great video! I was curious in the final moments of the blocking motion where your eyes should be. Are they on the Spiker's nose the entire time, even while you are jumping to block and the spiker is preparing to hit?
Your eyes should be in soft focus around their head. The eyes leave the ball after the set has come out 3 feet and then they lock into the hitter. Then you’re looking at their head with awareness on the shoulders, the body, the ball coming in. All of those cues will show where they’re likely to go. Don’t stare at a specific thing… start seeing the whole thing with a soft focus
Thanks for the video! Is it safe for your thumbs to do block like this?
The fingers need to lack tension. I’ve seen jammed fingers mostly when they are tight/stiff. So blockers need to learn how to jump high and reach THEN relax the arms and and hands so they can make subtle moves to get more blocks and touches
Do you have any tips for actually reading the set? I've been playing for around a year but recently I'm moving to play outside. What I realised I'm struggling with is actually approaching to the right place with the right timing. I play at a relatively low level with mates so our sets are not always the same tempo but other people all hit it fine but me.
Great question! Your eyes need to start seeing the cues. It’s called “chunking” Imagine hitting/returning a good tennis serve for the first time. It will be hard to know how much speed and spin is coming off the ball. So it will take time but I always say to do these… - get to a consistent place so you’re ready to adjust to anything. Watch our Blue Paint step video. - read the setter. If they’re moving forward, backing up, moving tight to the net.. those are all signs that the ball is going to do something different. The more you notice those signs and understand what’s likely to happen, the more you can anticipate and be ready - go with the set. If it’s inside, go with it and it hit cross. If it’s outside go hit line. There’s countless ways to hit line or cross like flat, deep, down, tip, throw… it’ll be obvious for the blocker that you’re going in that direction but then you beat them by the shot you choose to hit
@@fourathletes4 Thanks for the detailed response!
You bet!
Setters are the best with short serve because they get the "touch".
And middles need some practice haha
These Vids are amazing as always😍
Thanks! Appreciate it 💪
Great explaination 🎉😊
Thanks! 🙏
Uh oh. My back court girls are about 10 feet in the wrong spot compared to this.
Haha time to make some changes, Coach 🤣 you got this!
@@fourathletes4 would never make changes. The high school varsity teams I coached were exceedingly successful using a defense opposite of that in the video. 50-6 in league play over 5 years winning 4 league championships. The same school hasn't won a league championship in the last 3 years after the current coaches changed back to the defense in the video.
At the HS level there’s a lot of tips over the block and weaker shots so the opposite probably works great. Don’t change a thing!
New subscribers from Cambodia 🇰🇭 great tips ❤
Welcome!!
I'm fairly new to volleyball, so I don't know the etiquette. For the ball in "limbo" at @2:00 Should the person behind the blocker call off the person in front? I instinctively try to put my hands out, but what is the best way to talk to a person when a ball is between them, particularly in this case? Thank you for the awesome video!
The blocker has to be smart and disciplined. If they think it’s tight tonight their body, they should try to play it. If they think it’s moving faster/farther they should leave it. No communication in the heat of the moment is going to solve that. If I have a good libero behind me I’ll be more cautious and let them take it. It’s more of a teamwork and chemistry between the players instead of communication
Thank you for simplifying a complicated technique into something easy to teach middle school level players. Please keep the tutorials coming. ❤
Thanks! Appreciate the encouragement! Good luck!
❤❤❤
Wooo!
i dont understand, im so sad, im gonna fail the tournament 😅🥲
We're always learning. Keep going!
Can you will please make videos about setting as my university coach has given up on me and through your I see myself improving
1) repair that relationship. It’s hard to do it on your own. Possible but really tough 2) for every video you should get 100 reps of that skill 3) we’ll work on those videos! 4) good luck!
@fourathletes4 thanks for the heads up I'll do my best
You got this 💪
How do i jump higher tho, im 5 7 and wanna hit at 11 ft
Its a lot of knowledge out there but as a fellow short at 5'5 who touches 10 feet isaha Rivera and the whole thp team has fantastic free viedos on that topic you should join their skool group
Great idea!
We’re here for volleyball. Not strength and conditioning. A lot of great people out there doing jump training
Great message! Can you guys make a video on how to jump set? Would love to hear your advice
We have some in the mix!
just curious- i see every single professional mens setter use a right-left sequence whilst i see lots of female setters use this sequence explained in the video. is there a reason for this difference between the genders?
I think it’s just what you were exposed to from coaches early on. Maybe instead of gender it’s by country. I think you’re gonna start seeing any footwork given the set type/play. These videos are a start or another tool… then it’s up to the players to use whatever works for them and the situation. More problem solving focus and less technical focus
Awesome channel! Tried some videos and working! P.s.what kind of flooring is it? Is it good? We want to remake our court in Bali
Thanks! It’s called sport court. Easy to install and very versatile
3:04 What do you mean by shoulders flat? Does dropping the shoulders means shoulders point more to the net than perpendicular to the net?
Shoulders flat means they are horizontal to the ground. Dropping the shoulder makes it point towards the ground so the arms can angle the ball across the court.
the best volleyball channel out there!
You know it! 😂
Great tips and video!
Thanks so much!
The legs provide the distance and the arms provides the location, no?
Not always. Similar to golf… there’s a time and place for every combination
This makes sense... because most serves come from zone 1 at low levels, do you talk about where the setter is so the passers are facing the setter? Does it matter that they face the setter?
If they do serve from zone 5 you would flip it. The common rule is face the server/hitter, use your platform to angle.
Question what part of the hand should the ball be coming off of last when you release? Which part of the hand are you aiming with ?
The ball shouldn’t get into your palm. It should stay in the fingers. Just like a basketball shot, using a soft hand that will allow for more touch and accuracy as you flick or spring the fingers through the ball. A lot of that motion comes from the wrists but the fingers get the credit
could you make a video teaching the technique of topspin / jump serving?
ruclips.net/video/hmQr-iH7cE4/видео.html
@@fourathletes4 thanks allot for the video i appreciate it a ton!
Why did that ball not float
Haha it does perfectly. Probably hard to tell with no passers. Plus, if she served it a little slower it would have moved more. The ideal goal is to have it come fast but still move rather than slow and move a lot
@fourathletes4 oh I saw it had little spin but it didn't move much
