This seems to explain and justify the murderous way that I recall Odysseus will deal with the Suitors later on, on his return. Although at 22.48 one of the Suitors at least jokingly suggests that Telemachus may be plotting to kill them, but then says how convenient it might be if Telemachus did not return alive from his journey. We seem to be moving towards a 'kill or be killed' situation.

While of course since there are no audio recordings from Ancient Greece, so we don't know for certain how anything was pronounced, some of the pronunciations of names in this reading e.g. Aegisthus and Orestes are not quite how I understand academic classicists would say them. There are guides, with recordings, as to how to say names from the Odyssey and its brother poem the Iliad on Professor Emily RC Wilson's website. However, these are based on the customary ways to say the names in the English speaking World, which are sometimes slightly Anglicised or influenced by the Latin versions rather than directly from the Greek, and not necessarily the same as are used in other languages. E.g. 'Odysseus' is known as 'Odysse' in French; the original Greek forms of 'Circe', 'Ajax' and 'Achilles' were more like 'Kirke', 'Aiax' and 'Akhilleos', with the 'kh' like the gutteral 'h' sound in the Scottish 'Loch'.

Minor point, but I am puzzled near the beginning of Book 1 by: 'after ravaging [looting and destroying] the sacred citadel of Troy' If it was 'sacred', why destroy it? Wasn't it blasphemous and risking divine wrath to destroy something sacred? 30.09 Eurycleia the old lady slave who has become almost a part of the family. I think we just have to accept that, without justifying them, attitudes and values around slavery and many other things were very different from ours. In their culture, Penelope and Odysseus were not bad people just because they owned other human beings as property. Around 30.30 we are told that Odysseus's father Laertes (who is still alive but retired from ruling the island and running the household) originally bought Eurycleia as a slave when she was an attractive young woman. Homer thinks it surprising or significant enough to mention that Laertes chose not to exercise his right as the master to sleep with Eurycleia, so as not to upset his wife. It was a fact of life then that attractive slaves might have to have sex with their masters. This happened to many of the Trojan women captured by the Greeks in the Trojan War. As we are not told one way or the other, I wonder if it is assumed that Odysseus exercised similar restraint to his father in not lying with any of the female slaves in his household, out of respect for Penelope? Much later in the poem, Odysseus is filled with murderous rage to see some of his slave women going laughing to sleep with their lovers among the Suitors, and it is probably the same slave women who he has executed near the end for disloyalty. Could this be sexual jealousy, if these slave women were his concubines? Just a thought, to which I don't know the answer.
