I have the exact same model, the L322 3.0 TD6 (same colour too, but with grey leather interior) although mine is two years older, 2002, which I believe is about the time they first introduced the L322. I’ve had mine for about 12 years now (it’s kept abroad at my holiday home so the annual mileage is low.) Over the 12 years it has also had a new gearbox, plus front air suspension, turbo, injector, brake pipe, wiper motor, fuel pump, windscreen and a new surround balance for the front seats. Also some paintwork for minor scratches and have replaced lower rubber window seals which were “bubbling up.” I bought it abroad for 13000 Euros and the above works have come to around 17000 Euros spread over the 12 years but those costs are misleading because the bulk of the work was done during my first 4 years of ownership during which I was basically paying for the previous owner’s neglect. Even so, the total outlay of 30,000 Euros (around £26,000) with half of it staggered over 12 years, I consider to be good value to drive a vehicle of this calibre. The average annual bills are now much lower, and reflective of the annual mileage. I pay attention to preventative maintenance; anything which shows any sign of defect gets promptly replaced, the gearbox oil is flushed and replaced every 50,000 miles maximum, and the car has been given the full KROWN anti-rust treatment, which is redone every year after thorough steam cleaning. In my view, the L322 is the most aesthetically pleasing model Range Rover to date, including the subsequent models. The 3.0 BMW unit may lack the extra oomf of the later 3.6 or 4.4 engines but in itself it is a very solid and durable unit, the service mechanics at the dealership see them all and tell me this is the most durable even if it doesn’t enjoy the happiest marriage with the transmission which needs to be maintained (ignore the sealed for life spiel!) I drive it for 1200 miles across Europe twice a year, predominantly motorway at a steady 75-80mph and over that distance I have averaged almost exactly 30mpg. I also have Pirelli Scorpion All Season tyres fitted, but in the winter I change to Continental T850 dedicated winter tyres for the Alps and the roads across Germany, Poland and the Baltics, and it performs brilliantly in all winter conditions as you would expect. By now you probably realise that I love this car and if it ever needs to be replaced (which I don’t foresee at this point) it would have to be another L322 from a more resent year with lower mileage, but at 300,000 km (187,000 miles) it still drives beautifully.

Personally, I would use thicker tube on the roll cage. I saw this same thing 30 years ago with thicker tube and it looked insane. I’m even looking to get one done myself..
