3mic set up - minimal mixing
Sometimes i like to just get something quick and fun in the mix to play around with. Even the slightest processing can change how you play and approach the kit.
The 3 mics are:
EV 664a - mono oh (into sebtron pre )
M160 - knee mic (into api512v)
Cascade VinJet - outside kick 6" away approx (into us 2-610)

A follow up to a video i did a few years back. This one dives a bit more into the signal chain and mix approach and explores a few key microphones/microphone placements for this type of sound. So many ways to go about this process which is what makes it so fun and ever changing! also, I am available for remote recording, tour and lessons! reach out for more info! thanks for watching! www.nddrum...

I had this old A zildjian pang/china...harsh sounding but had been in the family for years. i reached out to Manny at SKRETAS FAMILY CYMBALS. We discussed some things and within a wk i had it back and it sounded so much better. Still a unique sound but one I can blend in to many more musical situations. this is JUST audio from my GoPro in attempt to have it sound as natural as possible. I highl...

Recording Drums with One Mic, big room sound
Very tasty, nice land back groove, but with definite forward momentum. Love the drums percolating under everything and the guitar solo is killer.
Monster kick sound!
Badass!
Nick is the go to drummer. Not only is his groove wonderful but his tech knowledge and passion for getting you the right feel / mix is awesome. More than that. His love for music and overall approach to recording is second to none ❤
LOVE the room mic. X
Might be my new favorite GNBM song! Very well done. Especially like the build up at the end and that killer guitar solo.
👍👍👍👍
Very nice. Always enjoy hearing GNBM.
That's a really nice tune. GNBM sounds great as usual and of course, my favorite drummer is sitting behind the kit. Very tasty playing Nick.
Understated. Subtle. Funky x
Nice!
Nick You and your drum kit sound amazing. !!!!!!!!!! So tasteful and musical. and groovy !!!!!!!!!!
Dope!!!!
Just a GoPro
Great job man! I'm also a drummer, just curious...did you record this with a GoPro or a phone camera?
Great player.
Promo>SM
Tasty playing and those drums sound great even if they are Slingerland. Lol
😂😂😂
👂🍬
Badass!
Love the crunchy goodness of that vintage snare.and the mic does a great job of capturing a live sound.
Ok, blah blah blah... I want natural drums played, not effects... Tata...
Haha ok. Well, these are natural drums so.
Great then go watch one of the other billion YT videos of “natural drums” while I listen to this dude do unique & epic shit on the kit.
This dude said “tata” 😭
3:43 Yea the drums on their own sound right ! Then depending on the record label and studio, the different processes could dramatically change the final sound. Alot of the drum breaks that are notoriously sampled for example have alot of room sound (maybe chamber, actually they did use a room with a speaker as a chamber in some cases) and distorted kick drums, but to tape. But your kit sounds good as a base.
Good to see someone using a real drum kit. Theese days when most people say "drums" they just load up some plugin, and the "kits" are all shitty 808 or 909 style sounds and I hate that.
Thanks!
Man, the stick sound from that right hand ride is beautiful. Great jazz ride!
Great groovsky! Rock on, man!
There was hardly, if at all, muffling on 60's drum sounds. Drums were tuned high, like a jazz kit and usually with only 2 room mic's. Also, remember, they only had 4 track recording for most of the 60's and with all the bouncing/track reductions they did back then they had to make sure the instrument sound was dead on as they couldn't "fix it in the mix" as they do today.
Correct. I believe I mentioned the jazz tuning in the video the kicks tho definitely don't sound resonant. In part, due to the minimal mic-ing .. But again, I'm just trying to get that sound with my own approach. It isn't 1960 anymore, for better or worse and I can't always get away sending a client a two mic drum track...if the kick has its own mic, it needs some muffling to get the sound.
@@nddrums Actually the kick rarely had an muffling back then, no tape or muffling on any of the drums. Listen to any of the Funk Brothers/Motown drums of Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin and Richard "Pistol" Allen. No muffling anywhere and drums tuned like jazz because they both came from jazz. Keeping the front head on the kick is important if you're looking for that 60's sound. Also, even though technology has come along way, if you want that drum sound, all you do is room mic the drums. If you need to add a kick mic for your control, then so be it, but the room mic's will pick up the kick just perfect. Best of luck to you!!
@@ChannelingJohnBonham yeah, there's both..An open jazz tuning and a dryer sound as well. Like I said, the above mentioned albums have a dead dry thing...that is not a wide open kick sound. But there was a change in sound as the decade went on ...
Some very tasty stuff my man.
Sweet sounds. Not really the supraphonic I am used to hearing but cool drums. Do you do mobile recordings?
Yes, I do remotes drum tracks for folks all the time.and you can contact me through www.nddrums.com for Info!
The snares are a slingerland Hollywood ace and a Ludwig pioneer.
@@nddrums love me some slingy. I have a couple supras. One from 60 and one from 70s. But it ain't the tools, it's the carpenter. I dig your feel
Thanks so much!
Excellent groove my dear friend!! Love and respect Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Right on!
This is so sick.
Awww shucks man!
Dig the snare sound1 How are you treating it?
Honestly I think just some eq, maybe a little something on the drum bus
What kind of compressor are you using? The Waves dbx-160 plugin is pretty good on drums.
Honestly I did this so long ago I can't remember. If it wasn't the dbx then either an 1176 or distressor...I do love the DBx for punchy/vintage drum tracks tho!
Swishy cool groove. Nice work!
What mic are you using for your overhead? Sounds great!
Hey Thomas! Thanks so much. I believe I used an AKG c414 as my mono overhead at that time. Lately I've been using Beyerdynamic M160s alot too. Thanks for checking out the video!
Fantastic works my dear friend!! Much love Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Thanks so much Kyle!
Cool Drumming my good friend!! Love lots Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Nice one
Thanks Paul!
First like and first watch with Dad jy good friend!! Awesome works here My good friend!! Thanks for sharing!! Love lots Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Thanks so much Kyle! Glad you enjoyed it!
Digging the sounds my g✌🏽
Thanks so much!
Good stuff man! 👍👍 Groovy 🔥🔥🔥
Cool
Very tasty guys. Don't know how I missed this for the past year Nick. Very moody, pretty tune. Very nicely performed.
when you say jazz tuning, is it high or low tuning?
Definitely higher on Tom's. Bass drums were often stuffed with a pillow and the front head was removed so their tuning is less important although you still want it to blend with the other drums as well as the track. Thanks for watching!
sounds great .what kind of muffling are you using in the 18 kick drum
Hi Tony. Sorry I'm just noticing this message now. I believe it was just a fleece blanket. I got the mic halfway into the drum as well, no front head I believe...it's amazing how full and even loud an 18" bass drum can be!
Interesting techniques that really deliver that "sampled" drum sound from an acoustic kit. Nice work.
Freakin’ awesome!!!
