Knitwit Me
Добавлен 27 янв 2010
I love to share my expertise and know-how as a knitter, designer and author in knitting and design tutorials. I retired from my day job, as an engineer at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2017. I have always loved geometry, and playing with construction in knitting. I designed a blanket called "Prisma" that changed everything for me because I realized that garter stitch is an easy way to create colorful and interesting designs because of the simple relationship between stitch width and row height. Since then I have designed over 90 garter stitch blanket designs, and published 4 knitting books.
Using familiar techniques such as increases, decreases, 3-needle Bind off, short rows, we can create so many interesting knitted shapes. Those shapes can be combined into beautiful blanket designed that are colored your way, to beautify your home or give as gifts. Let me show you how!

Fantastic!
Glad you like it!
love the safe at home blanket so much, Ive just purchased the pattern and started knitting from my stash. However the pattern does not say how to knit the left sky from one house, together with the right sky from the next. can you advise?
Wonderful! The Indy pattern version of the safe home blanket does not have the instructions for working to adjacent skies together. That is reserved for the book version of the pattern. The book is called Margaret Holzmann’s iconic blankets and more in case you also want to get that.
Thank you for the video. It makes the pattern from my Iconic Knits Blanket book clearer. I’m surprised you can use wooden or bamboo needles with a cat in the house. Every time I’ve bought wooden needles, my cats have chewed the ends.
Oh those cats! I haven’t had that particular problem but I do have a ongoing battle with cat hair in my knitting.
I use the three needle cast off a lot, especially on shoulder seams, which seem to sit better when the garment is being worn.
That's a great use of 3-needle BO!
Thank you for demonstrating this technique, which shows how a really professional finish can be achieved.
Thank you. I’m glad you found it useful.
Very helpful, thanks!
I’m glad you found it useful
This is extremely useful! Do you have any tips for seaming garter along a side that has decreases at the ends of the rows? I have seen Staci Perry's (Very Pink Knits) videos on seaming garter stitch, but a cast-on edge or a straight side don't look the way an edge of a triangle in one of the geometric knit blankets looks.
You still have a little bumpy at at the end of the row but it is a little bulkier because of the decrease. Insert needle through two of the strands in the bump and be consistent is my best advice.
Margaret, these are so beautiful and I can’t wait to get your book and knit all of these!!
You are so welcome! I hope you enjoy knitting them.
Gorgeous 💛🩵💜🩷🤎
Thank you!
Hi Margaret, I can't wait for this book to be published - I've got it on pre-order with Amazon UK. It's due here on 28 Feb 2025. I'm thinking of making a cat-themed pillow or blanket for a dear friend and cat-lover who will be 80 in December 2025.
Your cat-themed pillow or blanket sounds like a great gift for your cat-lover friend. That combined with your thoughtfulness and time put into making it yourself, is sure to please her. Pillows and blankets are always a welcome present because they bring comfort. The book is available now in the USA but it takes longer to get to the UK because book shipments travel on a cargo ship from the USA to UK making many stops along the way. It can't be helped. Happy Knitting!
Hello Margaret. Thank you for this interesting walk-through your book. So many wonderful patterns! And I like the fact that you can use up stash yarn and have finished items with a variety of uses. It’s my birthday soon, so I think this will be my present to me!
You are so welcome!
All of them are absolutely gorgeous ❤ May I ask what your favourite yarn to knit these blankets is?
I've used many different yarns for these blankets. Using good yarn makes a big difference. Also I choose yarn lines that have a large range of colors. I like: Berroco Vintage; Plymouth merino superwash; Valley yarns valley superwash; Malabrigo Rios, Cascade 220 Superwash; and lately I’m obsessed with the colors of Rowan Felted Tweed.
@@knitwitmethis is very helpful. Thanks for the recommendations.
Just starting my knitting journey with the help of a great group of women in my area. I’ve saved your information and someday will make your safe at home blanket. Love it
Welcome to the world of knitting. The video will be here when you are ready!
Thank you for this great tutorial!
You're very welcome!
Hello Margaret. I was looking for videos about geometric knitting and came across this one of yours. A really informative and easy to follow knitted block tutorial - for which I thank you and have subscribed. However, when you mentioned checking your stitch count I realised I hadn’t done that with the sock I was knitting while watching. I am now facing about 15 rounds of unpicking due to one dropped stitch right in the middle of the pattern. I will now look forward to your next video - and will not be knitting while I watch - just in case!
Oh no! I hate when that happens. Can you use a crochet hook to "ladder" it back up to your needle? I'm sure there is a "how-to" video about that somewhere here on RUclips. Sock knitting is my take-along project because it is supposed to be mindless, but those tiny stitches have a way to escaping, don't they. I'm glad you found the video informative and that you subscribed. Thank you!
@ I would use a crochet hook normally, as you suggest. But this has a bit of a “lace” pattern which is a bit more complicated to pick up so frogging was quicker. All sorted now and the sock is nearly finished. Have a great week.
Thank you for such an informative & valuable video!
You are very welcome! And Happy Knitting!
Gracias por el maravilloso video!! ❤
Gracias a ti!
Love this blanket ….nice to meet you…
Thank you so much! It's lovely to meet you too!
Beautiful ❤❤❤amazing❤
Thank you!!
Thank you for watching.
This cast on is very clever!
Thank you.
@knitwitme Thank you for sharing it!
Magnifique. J’ai commencé cette belle couverture ce matin ❤ 🇫🇷
What a beauty! I also knitted such a blanket with houses 💪. It took me 4 months 😜. That blanket inspired me to start filming a knitting blog and showing my work here on RUclips 😊😊😊.
Oh wow! I'm so happy to here your Safe at Home blanket had an afterlife. When I designed it, I thought it would be my last knitting pattern, because my patterns weren't getting traction. But it was so popular that it inspired me to develop all the patterns that will be in my upcoming book, Margaret Holzmann's Iconic Blankets.
@knitwitme этот рисунок - шедевр😍
Thanks a lot ❤
I'm glad you found it helpful!
So excited I happened upon this video! Great tutorial!
Thanks for watching and Happy Knitting!
Do you think this could be made on a knitting machine? I was thinking of a building it like it was a quilt doing one row of the houses. Another row of the roofs and skies , I would seem them together using The Hague linker. I haven’t used the linker yet so I don’t know if that idea is practical or not.
I think you could, but you would need to have a knitting machine that can do garter stitch in order to use these exact stitch and row counts. Also, you would want to knit the roof in a solid color rather than in stripes to simplify it. Keep in mind that a stitch in stockinette is shorter than in garter stitch. The houses are knitted sideways so they would be wider worked in stockinette.
Where did you find the blue sewing needle that you use to sew. I would love to purchase one. Thank you
I purchase them from Yarnspirations: www.yarnspirations.com/products/susan-bates-finishing-needles-value-pack?variant=47070205739323
@ thank you
Thank you for doing this
You are welcome!
Love this pattern -- have had it in my Ravelry queue for ages, but haven't started. So glad this came up in my YT feed.
It is a really fun one to knit! I hope the video helps you out!
Wow wow and wow. A lot of work but easypeasy with the end result a STUNNING blanket. 1 house a night and before long you have finished. Clever girl.
It’s very satisfying to knit the houses and watch the blanket grow, and making them all a different color scheme keeps it interesting!
This is such a cute pattern! I love the name & idea of it too. Our home is our sanctuary ❤ I think using some 100% cotton yarn that it would make a really cute washcloth, pot holder or trivet! I might make one to practice the pattern & purl return from the left for my mom for christmas. Edited to add, thank you for simplifying the method of colorwork for us. It seemed so daunting before but watching & listening to you actually do this made me realize it's not something I need to avoid or shy away from anymore. ❤
Great idea to make a washcloth! Keep in mind that if you purl your house is going to be wider. This is because stockinette is taller than garter stitch. Also you will have to change the roof pattern because that shape will not be a "right triangle."
Thank you! @@knitwitmeI'll keep these tips in mind & play around with it, not cutting ends & weaving in until it looks like the shapes & proportions are correct. I already picked up the pattern & will use it to make various projects... hopefully one day, I'll knit the full blanket as well. 🥰
❤❤❤
Fascinating. Never seen anyone do purl stitch backwards!
It gets easier if you practice it. I now do it automatically when my stitch count dwindles to 8 or so stitches. I can only do plain purling backwards, meaning that I haven't figured out how to do decreases or increases. But for most of my needs, and patterns, the WS rows are plain knit.
Wasn’t it the knit stitch backward? She was doing garter stitch, after all.
What a sweet and loving project! Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to start working on my own blanket!
You’re welcome! Have fun with your blanket! You can purchase the pattern for the blanket at: www.theknitwit.org/store/safe-at-home-blanket The version shown in the video is the mini-house.
Ive learned so much from watching this. I might just try making a little house for my xmas tree. Many thanks🎉 Merry Christmas
I am glad you enjoyed the video and learned some new techniques! Your idea to use the house as a Christmas ornament is great!
❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉
I love this blanket. I just preordered your new book. I also put in a request to join your Facebook group. I’m looking forward to seeing other people’s blankets.
Thank you for your support! I will go and check out my group and let you in.
@ thank you!
Pour un projet à long terme, c'est super beau 👍 et bien expliqué 👍
Thank you so much!

This should be fun to make. Thnku for sharing the pattern ❤
You are welcome. Happy Knitting!
I liked your video very much❤ I am going to use this small house to knit Xmas ornaments and give them away to friends and family members to put them on their Xmas 🎄 . Thank you so much 💓
That’s a wonderful idea! I'm so glad it gave you inspiration. I would love to see some photos of the ornaments when you are done with them.
What a treat. Thank you. I have never had so much fun with a knitting book as I have had with your Geometric Knit Blankets. I regard it as a shaping (and color) workshop! I really need to buy this one. Edit: I went looking for the Iconic Knits book on the KnitWit website but found myself connected to Amazon with no details on which of the "iconic" projects (which I take means oldies but goodies for the most part) will be included. I will have to wait and see I guess but it might help your pre-order numbers if buyers could be sure about how many are duplicates from previous publications. Thanks!
Those are such kind words. Thank you! The next book (Dec, 2024 release) will have the Safe at Home pattern. You can preorder it here www.amazon.com/Margaret-Holzmanns-Iconic-Knit-Blankets/dp/0811775720/
Thank you. I have had the pattern for over a year. Hopefully this will help to feel less scared.❤
I think it will help you because it shows the sequence of construction steps and the techniques. Good luck!
Love this! Thanks!!
You are welcome!
