Oyin Adejobi went on to a pretty successful career in television. Had a couple of tv shows and made for tv movies. One of these days, hopefully I can sit down and write a more substantial piece on the early days of Yoruba theater 👍🏿

Remi Olabamiji sometimes spelled as Olabanji had a huge hit titled 'This World Is Beautiful' sometime in the late 70s, 78-79 i think. His music has always had an undercurrent of christian spirituality and religion behind it. It's no surprise that he joined The Celestial Church of Christ and has been one othe leading voices. I believe that he's still around. It took me years, but i finally found a copy of his landmark album.

The translation on the liner notes reads that Gani Abolupe was born in Oyo in 1934. Oyo and Ile -Ife are considered the two most important cities in the formation of the Yoruba nation. Gani started his career as a musician when he was 16 years old. Apprenticing under Lasisi Eji in Ibadan. He left Lasisi's band after 5 years and started a band with Lere. Lere Aiki. Olalere Aiki was born in Ibadan in 1936. He started his apprentice as a musician under the tutelage of Ayanrin. this is really awesome.

Fantastic. Thanks for this. I have never heard of Lere or Gani Abolupe. My mind is spinning because i have been looking for more traditional music like this. This is classic dundun and sekere music. Dundun and Sekere is basically the DNA of most popular Yoruba music. Apala, Sakara, Juju and most genres of Yoruba music has their roots in this traditional form. While Dundun and Sekere spans all areas of Yoruba land, Ibadan is the city most associated with the genre. At least post 1940's, Ibadan was a growing and thriving city that was able to support a variety of musical styles. Wow! Love it. I'm an Ibadan boy so i'm extremely vibing with this. Edit: Lere and Gani Abolupe were not siblings it would appear. The cover led me to think that they were related. Lere was Olalere Aiki, and Gani was Ganiyu Abolupe.
