Build a better Bee II!
This is part two of building a better bee. I talk about it’s assembly from construction, painting, & setup. I share details on the reasons why I designed this replica of Edward Van Halen’s famous black & yellow striped bumblebee guitar as seen on Van Halen II. The body is made of ash & the neck is made from a beautiful birds eye maple. The pickup is a Dimarzio Super Distoration & the bridge is a non fine tuner Floyd Rose two. This does not use a FR locking nut but instead it uses staggered locking Schaller tuners & a lubricated bone nut.

Bucking the Stratocaster Hum!

This a video addressing the 60 cycle hum from Fender Stratocasters. The first part of the video addresses this issue with making a dummy coil. Making a dummy coil does not work out. However, success to "bucking" the hum was achieved by using a noise reduction system from Ilitch .com. Complete instruction for wiring the Ilitch and adjusting for maximum quiet while retaining the stratocaster tone.

Beautiful neck! Where did you get that?
The body & neck are from www.lockecustomguitars.com/product-page/yellow-jacket-neck
I've tried the MIDI Guitar 3 with some Instruments and had a wonderful experience, only surpassed by the MIDI Pro 2 but not by far, and is way cheaper and customizable. Pretty Amazing MPE Tracking!!
The weird goo is black duct tape goop that he used to hold his guitar strap on at one point. 😅
That makes sense because he was always taping the Frankie up.
At the Kramer Factory in Neptune, NJ. Edward was known to write his signature in the neck pocket of all the originals and backup guitars that were built for him back in the 1980's for the 5150 tours. 😅
It would be cool to own one of these. Have you ever seen one?
Hi, Sean. I bet you had a wonderful time in Ireland :)
We did!
Awesome video! Cant wait for you to play it!
Have you played one of their necks?
Not yet, but I can’t wait.
Wow super cool video!
Thank you very much!
Awesome, can't wait to see it.

do i need volume pedal if i have attenuator?
No, but you can use one with a volume pedal. The attenuator is like having an addtional volume control but between the head and cabinet. So the volume on your guitar or a volume pedal will be before your head. Does that make sense?
The ROR guitar is a dream for me coz this is expensive AF. in comparison with the Synthaxe it's much cheaper and the tracking is on par with the Synthaxe (that shows how much the Synthaxe was ahead of it's time). That's why i just use the MadCatz mustang guitar (check that one. It's really a bang for your buck )
I will check that out thank you!
Sadly, this doesn't match the SynthAxe even in pricing, let alone features. The SynthAxe was MPE capable before the terminology even existed. Allan Holdsworth though so much of it, he wrote songs which could only be played on the SynthAxe. It also had unmatched tracking because it tracks the fingerboard and not the strings at the saddles.
Wasn't the SynthAxe pricetag around 10k? 4.5k seems reasonable next to that. I heard that Allan Holdsworth would sometimes tune in 5ths but I am not sure what songs. The Expressive MIDI Pro II does have fret scanning technolgy making it track very well and not the pickup at the saddles technology. Check out this demo: ruclips.net/video/puvt6zNafFk/видео.htmlsi=CGqDiCFKXAOdxniN
@@scanjazz777 I did take a look at the video and there are some mistriggers and notes which didn't trigger in some of the fast passages, which don't seem to happen in the SynthAxe due to how it reads resistance values across the fretboard for each position and determines the event from that. It also supports string bending, which I don't think I've seen in that demo at all. There's one channel I forgot the name who now owes one of the SynthAxe units which belonged to Holdsworth and has some covers of the SynthAxe exclusive songs as well.
Let's not forget the Yamaha G10. Add a breath controller to it and it's even better.
I missed that one. Have you owned one?
@@scanjazz777 Yes, I have one now. Unfortunately the brain (rack unit) needs repair.
@@lunastratDoes it track well?
I owned a SynthAxe. I've not found anything that compares to it. Not yet anyway.
This was a fun video to watch, but quick question did you have to shim the neck? Planning on installing a non fine tuner floyd rose and I'm not sure if I need to shim the neck.
Yes, I put a shim about the thickness of a business card.
@@scanjazz777alright thanks for the help since I dont wanna have to route the body.
Great work!
Thanks!
When your video popped up in my feed, I debated on watching because I didn’t want a cringe experience seeing someone mess up a EVH guitar. Within a few minutes I realized how serious you took the effort. By the end of the video, I was pretty floored by the amount of work and detail you put into the project. You really thought it through and recreated an authentic-looking Frankenstrat. Great work. Thanks for making a concise video detailing the job! I’ll be watching your guitar case VH logo video next. P.S. Michael Spinks neck = Lololol! I remember him. Total accurate description. I hate that gap in the bottom fret, too!
Wow, thank you very much!
I put dummy coils in my Fender Mustangs and they worked great. You have to make sure the pickup is oriented right with the other pickups. If it's turned the wrong direction it will still hum so you may have to turn the dummy the other direction to get rid of the hum.
I had a really good dark humor joke for this but since I'm also a Dimebag fan I won't go there... 😂🤣
Ha, I do like dark humor, but I am also a Dimebag fan!
@@scanjazz777 if Eddie's the King of rock (which he is) then Dime is the Prince of metal. Great video btw!
A bit of misinformation in this video: The Floyd Rose, non fine tuning bridge that Stew Mac sells IS the German made original bridge, same as you have installed on your guitar. It comes with the wood screw style posts And the screw in style arm. You don’t have to buy anything separately. The idea is that buying this bridge gives you the old school look and installation, with the wood screw style posts and the original screw in arm, as used in the early 80’s. I use these non fine tuning Floyd bridges on Brad Gillis red Strat replicas that I build. 🤘
Do they actually say made in Germany? The quality of the seperate posts and arm are superior to the screw in especially when using softer woods imho.
@@scanjazz777 Floyd *recently (within the past few months) stopped putting Made in Germany on the bottom of their baseplates. I have purchased several, over the years, and they all had the Made in Germany text. Only the last one I bought, maybe 6 weeks ago did not have the text. As for the wood screw posts? I tend to agree with you, but it depends on the body wood that guitar is made of. If it is softer, then the knurled inserts are more stable. However, if it is alder, poplar, swamp ash, or even mahogany, the woodscrews work just fine, for many, many years. Plus, if you are doing a top mount (EVH style) the wood screws entire length is sunk into the body and it will literally never give at all. I prefer the screw in style arm, just because I'm old school, and it's what I'm used to. As far as function? The screw in, collared or the new push in arms all function exactly the same. The tightest you will ever get any Floyd Rose arm is the screw in, when it is screwed all of the way in. All the others will always have a minute amount of "slop". lol
@@Metalcop5150thank you, great info!
Awesome work there.
The metal tape should be put even where electronics is. On the pickguard. Copper tape here is the same of aluminum tape, cheaper. Very Better even of graphite paint.
It makes a huge difference!
@scanjazz777 or you put the tape or you don't and doesn't care about noise.
What brand would be a good guitar to do a tribute myself? I’ve done a Frankenstrat & the black & white & would love to do a bumblebee. Thanks

Series parallel wiring, microcoil, shielding, Ehx hum debugger, anything else?
I have not heard of that one, how much?
I think that is part of the reason all the old blues guys seemed to play Gibson type humbucker guitars it must have been terrible with a Strat type guitar back then with all the neon and the electrical code was pretty much non existent.
I love that Bumblebee and the real proof is in the pudding with the sound excellent post and thanks
Fender had problems with consistency on all MiM EVH stripe series guitars. In the beginning they hand taped them with results like your showing. … they started using paint masks with more consistency.💯
Thanks for sharing!
I built mine with pawnshop stuff and painted it myself using painters tape and just regular spray paint so the linens were a bit thicker ( Ed used electrical tape I believe) but I have OCD so I'm kinda detail oriented... Lol Anyway, I was more than satisfied with the final result. Funny thing though, I had the same problem as Ed had keeping the damn thing in tune...lol. Like I said earlier pawnshop guitars are a good way to go if you're on a tight budget. Hope that this is helpful in any way. Good luck with your project!!!!
Thank you!
Smoke another, it was in Missoula, Montana lol
I think at best if you want to create a bumblebee replica with a more "accurate" bridge, floyd rose sell a non fine tuner version in "antique silver" which while not ENTIRELY accurate it's definitely a good jumping off point? (the blocks and saddle shapes on modern non fine tuning floyds are different though)
I found an older non-fine tuner FR2 and it is finished in black chrome. It looks close to the original & I am debating on wether or not to remove the chrome to the raw metal.
The ORIGINAL FRANKY IS LOCKED UP AT THE 5150 VAULT......IT WAS NEVER IN NY .....that was a copy
www.vhnd.com/ just confirmed it is currently with Wolfgang, I have studied a lot pictures and that instrument pictured in NY is legit.
@@scanjazz777 legit copy The original never left 5150
Proof?
Notice the new coil isn't in a faraday cage. There reason for the hum is that the pickups act like antennas and pick up EM interference. The dummy coil does the same but is connected out of phase. thus canceling the unwanted interference signal.
Hi Sean! Wow..thank you for mentioning my video towards the end. I'm humbled by the compliments on my Bee project! I noticed you just ordered your Bee body and neck a few days ago (in another comment). If you plan to use any of the Floyd Rose tremolos, be sure to install your bushings into the raw body before doing any of the paint work! I made a critical mistake by not doing this and I might actually have to start over on one of my Bee bodies from that video series that you mentioned. I knew better than to start painting without having the bushings installed but at the time I wasn't sure where that body was going to end up so I didn't install the bushings...now I regret it. The holes drilled by Locke are VERY tight for the Original Floyd bushings...not to mention the northern ash is VERY hard so there is no "flex" inside the holes. Also, the neck pocket is very tight as well. So...avoid my mistake and do a full mock-build with all of your parts and hardware before starting! Good luck, and keep me posted! I'd love to see how your project goes!!! Cheers!!!
Hi Brian, thanks so much for all the pointers! I will definitely follow your advice and I will keep you posted my progress, iron sharpens iron! I have 8 weeks until the neck & body show up. *Sigh* the waiting is the hardest part...
@@scanjazz777 Yes, indeed. The anticipation builds....ha! Oh...I should mention, I know Chris Locke has sold the business to an existing company in Colorado (there was an Instagram post made about this recently). So, it might be smart to double check and verify what I just said above when you receive your body and neck, since my bodies were created over a year ago at his original shop in Ohio. In other words, the new builder that took over may have decided to modify a few things based on their preferences...so it wouldn't hurt to verify your Floyd bushing hole diameters compared to mine, etc. ...and since they are also building a matching neck, hopefully they will size them properly for a good fit right out of the box.
@@CoffeeDrinker71 Hmm, somewhat alarming but they seem to be moving forward normally. Thanks again!
@@CoffeeDrinker71 Locke or the new company said the Floyd Rose bushing diameter is 10.2 mm. Thanks for your wisdom!
@@scanjazz777 Yes, that's correct. The standard size for a Floyd Rose bushing is 10.2 mm. After you receive your body, double check the diameter of the holes in the actual body to make sure it won't be too tight/undersized.
Sean,,Eddie said it's the frankenstrat just painted black and yellow? I understood it to be the same guitar just new paint job,, I know I saw Eddie say that In a interview?
Actually, the Frankenstrat was the black & white one on the cover of VH I, then he retaped it and painted it red. The black & yellow Bumble bee was pictured on VH II. Here is a picture link that shows both guitars where the frankenstrat is shown with a white pickguard 2nd from right, the bee is on the left. www.reddit.com/r/Vulfpeck/comments/12hlsuu/eddie_van_halen_with_the_unreleased_joe_dart/
@@scanjazz777 thank you you are right I was confused on that thanks for responding
Great points thank you!
The original non fine tuner Floyd probably had a Nickel finish on it. You can still find nickel hardware here and there but I doubt FR offers anything in Nickel. My opinion is Nickel looks better and ages better than chrome nickel will darken and age quicker than chrome. Chrome will look newer longer but will pit, bubble and rust in not as appealing as nickel. I think nickel hardware was kinda the standard for guitars back in the day. You’d probably have to bead blast the chrome off the new stuff and have it nickel plated or perhaps you could get it powder coated to a less shiny grey or something similar looking to nickel. I really think nickel hardware just looks higher quality than chrome but that’s probably subjective. If you’re wanting to get as authentic as you’re talking about I think nickel is the only way to achieve what you’re going for.
Excellent points btw!😊
Great job man!
Thanks!
The copyright issue is because he used a Fender body and the EVH is another brand.

Cool video. Question about the Floyd- I got my Frankie a few weeks ago and the floyd is already resting on the body but the action is just slightly too high for my liking. I can’t lower it anymore. Any ideas on how to get the bridge to lower if it’s already resting on the body?
I’d take it to your favorite tech for good complete set up , I did with mine when I bought a new Floyd hot rod for my Frankie
@@MrMike-fm8bp well I did that. But they just messed with the truss rod. The neck was already as straight as it could be. So it left me stumped on how to lower it. I’ve heard of people talking about taking the springs out of the back releasing the tension on the bridge so you can raise the two posts on each side. Then mounting the bridge back in place and putting the springs back on, but I’m having a hard time understanding how that will lower it just the little bit it needs for my desired action. It would elevate the string height even more and then I could possibly lower it once the posts are reset but I want to confirm with more people on this method before trying it out.
I think a shim for the neck would do the trick. It would raise the neck up so that you would be able to have a little room for the Floyd Rose to be adjusted down. Certainly take this to an experienced luthier & they would know exactly how to do this. Let me know how you do.
@@scanjazz777…..you are correct…at that point sounds like only shimming the neck would work 👍
