I think the sequels completely miss the concept of FLCL and Haruko. The idea of Haruko being in love with Atomsk was originally Amarao projecting his jealousy onto Atomsk, the canonization of that concept in the sequels ruins the series IMO.

Alternative just didnt feel like a flcl tho.. not saying progressive was great, but it at least felt like a sequel. Where alt felt more like a slice of life anime to me.. it might have to do with that im a loner by nature tho and can never relate to storys with a group like that..

Honestly i really like progressive ,while watching both it and the original i didn't even know there were deeper messages and just enjoyed them

What do you think of Grunge and Shoegaze? I really didn't like Grunge, but Shoegaze was a good continuation to Alternative IMO but both shows suffered from three episodes.

i actually loved progressive. ede and hidomi were really good characters imo. the ending was good, the soundtrack was good, and i dont think anything was 'bad' about the show. i do wish the animation was more unique and creative like the original FLCL, tho. i dont like alternative, tho.

I never understood how the original gets labeled as “deep”… It’s just horny teenagers with some of the greatest animation in history and an incredible soundtrack. Maybe it’s because I first saw it at age 30 but the story really is the most forgettable part of it… The VIBE however… Is not.

I am a younger watcher if the FLCL series (17) and I remember liking progressive more than the original when I was younger because I didnt understand the original and progressive was epic

Am I the only one who watched the original in 2003 and the sequels were actually pretty good. Like yeah it's not the first 6 episodes value but they were still good and to me at least better then most anime coming out now a days. Pillows still show up. Original writing and again great artwork.

You convince me to give Alternative second shot. I liked the themes in it and it felt like FLCL but I found some of the characters more annoying than in Progressive. Maybe a second viewing might change that for me.

So I just looked it up this is what was said in tweets by the staff. Fooly Cooly alternative was intended to be a stealth prequel, and created a set up for an unused concept from the original FLCL where the small town of Mabase was actually on a colonized Mars the entire time.

I think that in a way the look of the show is more on the safe side and not as weird or experimental as the original I think studio trigger would be an amazing option if they do anything more with flcl

Progressive felt is was trying way too hard to be like OG FLCL. And while Alternative was pretty ok iwn its own, it doesn't hit that level the Classic had.

It's under 6 hours run time for both seasons combined so considering it's pretty good, I'd say so yes.

Alternative is mid and didn't need to have anything to do with FLCL. I can understand liking it on its own merits. Progressive was friggin awful and is a case study in just how bad poor directing and inexperienced animators can make a show.

I just couldn't get past a single episode of the new version(s). It just didn't have what the original had in any way. It's hard to describe why FLCL works so well, The chaos and confusing events mentally puts you into the perspective of a middle schooler meaning the world does not make sense while you try to act more mature than you are and roll with it. Its such a good representation of possibly the most turbulent, hormonal, and moody time in ones life.

Alternative was definitely better/more reminiscent of the original, but I think the colors and animation of Progressive could be taken as intentional. You have the young tsundere character that, as you said, is more on the apathetic side. Not caring about much and just wanting to float through her own and other people's lives. Bleak and muted color designs. But when the headphones fry her head we see a personality shift in her, and a color and animation shift in the show to being goofy and childish like she becomes. Even when she's back to "normal", she's still different than she was before. caring for her friends. Finding someone she loves. Fighting for herself and them and standing up to Haruko. Before that only her dreams had that "exciting" look. The show was being told through her eyes and her feelings as represented in the art. Vivid and colorful dreams and a bleak and uncaring outlook on life. Until her outlook started to change, the way SHE saw the world around her changed, and so the way WE saw the world through HER did as well. I won't deny Alternative is better because of it feeling more like the original, but Progressive might have been made the way it was, "badly", by design for telling Hidome's story. Also as a side note, if anything, original FLCL wasn’t so much just about growing up, as it was not to grow up too fast. You see Naota always trying to act maturely, especially around Mamimi, while still catching himself acting like a kid. Then Haruko comes and he thinks himself even more “grown up” than he really is. Finally “swinging the bat”, drinking drinks he normally wouldn’t, being more forward with Mamimi. All things she notices and comments on. Then he thinks he can make it on his own with Haruko and runs away, thinking it an independent adult move while in actuality making him look like more of a child. Mamimi wants to keep him stifled while Haruko gives him an outlet to grow up too fast, something he already was trying to do even if it was all just an act. In the end when both influences finally leave him, he’s able to just be normal with his friends, and grow at his own pace. That was always my take anyway, that it was about growing up, but also NOT to do it too fast. Or maybe I’m stupid and wrong in both evaluations and I don’t know anything. Afterall, “Never Knows Best”.

When you hear the story of FLCL's production and the general theme of the anime, you'd realize that a sequel could never work. Every episode in the original anime represented something for a person's adolescence. Different kind of loves a kid can go into with the different characters in the series. An unhealthy love with his brother's ex-girlfriend. An innocent love that could never work out with an older woman. An ambiguous love with a person of the same age. Everything is spontaneous, everything is fleeting, much like real adolescence. Haruko herself is naively chasing her own love as well. Whether or not she finds it should also be left as ambiguous. Even the use of an unheard of indie band is an adolescent choice. A sequel is just an insult to the original. I love The Pillows, but they've become well known after FLCL as well.
