Content Is NOT King! Top 5 Elements Of A Podcast or YouTube Channel
Over the years it's been said many times that content is king. I think that statement is a common misnomer and I believe I can prove it. If content were king how would you decide what shows to watch or what podcasts and RUclips channels to subscribe to? There have to be other elements that help sway our opinions on the things we consume.
Since 2006 I've done my best to create fun, yet informative podcasts. During my almost two decade long journey I have analyzed many factors that go into creating "can't miss" entertainment. I believe there are two main elements that make up successful shows and in this video I explain what they are and why one of them doesn't have a formula.
If you disagree...

    I’m blind and have been using all kinds of recorders for years. From Philips DCC Cassette and Minidisc and then digital recorders. I’ve been a bit stuck with Olympus latterly as they have featured voice guidance for some years now. Was delighted when the Zoom Essentials came out with their much publicised accessibility via voice guidance. The voice guidance is really appreciated of course but, because it is based on pre recorded text to speech files, rather than a dynamic screen reader, it is very limited as to what it provides. So, yes, you get spoken menus along with friendly beeps which, for example, are toned differently when turning the volume up and down. You don’t get things like remaining time; how much recording time a recording in progress has taken, you can’t hear what files by name you have when browsing back over previous recordings. And so on. All that said, there is a lifeline. I purchased the Bluetooth receiver and installed the H6 essential app onto my iPhone. This is where that dynamic screen reader thing comes in. I was able to hear every aspect of what was on the app screen which was essentially a mirror of what is on the actual recorder. So, I do commend Zoom over all for what they have done, especially as the IOS apps are so accessible, the downer is that you can’t do all those things onboard of the unit itself and I don’t think there is any way they could update the TTS files to reade more as elements such as timings are fluid and can’t be pre known and thus accounted for.

    • @FreePodcastTools
      @FreePodcastTools 12 дней назад

      It depends on the microphone you pair it with. I really like the Saramonic paired with condenser microphones. However if you need to drive a super gain hungry microphone like the Shure SM7B then I would go with something that pushes 60dB of gain or more like the Zoom ES2 or the newer Focusrite Gen 4 (I think that's the generation they're on now). Unless you want to pair it with a mic booster which is also another option. Also, some people don't like the headphone out as they want an extremely loud output. The output is okay but not anything that will blow your eardrums.

  • @celebril
    @celebril 14 дней назад

    Definitely, low cut off, IMHO. There is definitely a warmth and fullness with the AKG. It is also a very transparent mic, which I would expect out of the little brother of the classic C414. FYI, I use a C414 as my routine mic for podcasting and meetings. I'm running it cardioid, and in that format the two behave rather similar, though there is a bit better quality with the classic. With proper gain structure, this mic is a very good candidate to take off axis so that it's not stuffed in front of the camera. One thing to be aware of with these mics, which relates to their transparency. They are much more sensitive to the pre-amp than many other microphones. TASCAM and ART pair well with them. It's fantastic with Focusrite. Yamaha pres can be very good, but can sometimes feel a bit bright. That's fine when you want the brightness; you just need to be aware. One thing you absolutely need to try with this mic, just for the fun of it, is to play with the proximity effect. You'll want your compressor tuned and probably some gentle soft-knee limiting, but do it! You got from the room tone that you typically get, to that "on the break" point that we normally go with. Then take it in close in that one-to-two inch range and hear that "Big FM Radio Voice" kick in. It's just fun! 🙂 Going for something lower end to this can be interesting. There really is a "grows on you" aspect to it. It's also part of the difference between a dynamic and condenser. A lot depends on your voice and matching the mic to it. Do you need the smoothness more or the clarity and crisp response?

    • @FreePodcastTools
      @FreePodcastTools 12 дней назад

      Excellent thoughts and insight as usual. It really has grown on me. I will try close micing it and get some of that body from the proximity effect. I will also try a bit of processing with it to see where it lands then. I tend to lean more towards smoothness as my voice can get sibilant when it's too crisp (in my opinion). AKG makes exceptional microphones that never disappoint when it comes to build quality. I know you love the big brother to this microphone. At that price it would have to be my daily driver. LOL! Thanks for the great comment Raul!

    Personally I liked the "across the table test." Very creative and useful test. I have NOT ever seen that before. I liked the FLAT profile the best. Your voice seemed more "rounded out." I have a the AKG P420 and the P220 and like them quite a bit. Currently my quest leads me to look for my ultimate "forever" mic. At the moment that would be the Lauten Audio LS-208. I have heard it on other peoples voices and DANG... I almost would believe it was forged from enchanted materials and polished with magic pixie dust and brought to life with incantations. LOL. the only thing holding me back is ... the price!!! LOL Go figure. Someday I make that purchase. I hope it sounds as good with my voice as the ones I have heard. Watched the whole video... LOL... and have some questions that I do not believe you addressed even though it was pretty thorough. Can you please tell me how tall the single most arm is from the desktop to the top of the arm articulation where the gas spring is connected? I am trying to make sure it will fit under a monitor that is already mounted. I noticed in your video that when you moved the Rodecaster at one point it nudged the monitor behind it. At this point having some time behind you with this setup would you use the same style single mount or would you use something else like a pole mount with a multi section swing out articulated arm configuration, i.e. no gas spring. Also have you had any issues with the rode caster moving down when you press the buttons on it? Found this channel trying to find information about the Vesa mount size. Lots of great information and well presented. Subscribed.

    • @FreePodcastTools
      @FreePodcastTools 22 дня назад

      Hi. I have since moved away from this type of VESA to RODE's own VESA Mount added to a regular boom arm. If I'm understanding your question correctly the VESA sits 8-9.5 inches from the desk to the area where the adjustment screw is. My measurement depends on whether you include the thick clamp up to the mounting hole (which is about 1-1.5 inches) The RODECaster Duo was touchy due to it being so lightweight. The RODECaster Pro 2 sits better with this mount due to its weight. I've had people still say it can life though. I'd go with RODE's VESA mount now though. I'd use a straight pole over a boom arm if I had to do it all over again. Thanks for the great questions.

    Sounds like a replacement for the Zoom Podtrak P4. Obviously less channels, but for the podcaster looking to for a device to be an interface and record at the same time, this would be it.

    • @FreePodcastTools
      @FreePodcastTools Месяц назад

      Hi Dave! Congrats on the new job! I think that's a fair assessment as it does just about everything the P4 could do. It's seems like a pretty good value. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

      The Podtrak is a 4 track recorder where the H1 XLR is a 2 track recorder, but the H1 XLR should offer better clipping protection and a lower noise floor compared to the Podtrak. Which one should get for the prices is going to come down to ones situational needs. If one is simply doing a 4 person studio pod cast of people chatting then the Podtrak is likely going to be the better option; however if one is going out into unknown locations for event based live podcasts or are planning to do heated topics where someone is likely to get excited and start yelling or there might be loud ambient sounds around then having a couple H1 XLR's would be the better pod cast option.

    • @IberianGeek

      @@billyoung9538Thanks for the advice! I think I will choose the H1 XLR.

      @@IberianGeek there are a few other details about the Podtrak P4 that haven't been tested with the H1 XLR that might push one towards it for a podcasting situation. The Podtrak P4 has a crazy amount of gain potential (70db), and is one of the few devices that can power a Sure SM7B unassisted with it, and there still aren't many devices that can do that, particularly with 4 tracks at it's price point. That's one of the big reasons it's still considered by many to be the best budget podcasting interface, and is so popular. The H1 XLR has yet to be tested, but given the Essentials series, which this looks quite similar to, were not able to do the equivalent without an inline preamp of some form that could be a positive for some. While I'm not saying the H1 XLR might be a better overall device, I personally would make sure it tests better than the H1Essential first because that had a really bad noise floor; however, this is more expensive so is more likely to be a stripped down H4 H1Essential variant.

    the only con with this mic is that there's no gain control on the microphone. I use it as a USB plug-in on Mac OS and I turn it all the way up, the voice is still a little too low (which is quite the opposite of my experience with a Blue Yeti - this one, gain goes through the roof and the sound starts breaking)

    • @FreePodcastTools
