what's the correct way to loop it onto the stake? if you just loop it on without any adjustments, like leaving it just around the stake, the measurement is like 3 inches off or so.

The reason the slide part of it is there is not if you have a longer bit. It is there to hold the screws in place and stop dropping off as you drive them in
