You're burning up your pump with one of the ports covered. I have the same set up and the skimmer works perfectly without blocking the other port. There's a problem with the skimmer set up and your solution is ruining your pump. Those little skimmers are finicky snd can take some little adjustments to get good flow. Sometimes it's just a small adjustment in how deep the skimmer bucket sits below the waterline. Or the level of the bucket could be off. The sock thing is good for cartridge filters, but are completely unnecessary with a sand filter. The sock is further restricting the flow of water into the skimmer and adding even more strain on the pump. Why did you turn off commenting on the first skimmer video? You're spreading bad advice and damaging other people's pumps.
The plug comes withe POOL. It isn't intended for use withe skimmer. The pool instructions say to never run the pump with the ports blocked. In addition to the strain on the pump, it creates a dangerous amount of suction at the open port.

My intex skimmer came with a modified plug that had a small hole in the tip. It reduces the flow but doesn't stop it completely.
Great tip
Thanks that’s all I needed to see if it worked and it does save me $300
