Velocity goes along with down range energy. A good pattern is always important but if the shot is not traveling fast enough for the type of shot you are using and no penetration to the vitals resulting in cripples.

The idea of spead messing up patterns is very old. Quote from 1700s said more powder less lead shoots fast wide spread... less powder more lead shots far kills dead... lots of us blackpowder shooters still go by that

I copied his 3 ounce load but loaded it in 2.5 oz in 10 gauge. I experimented with wad slits. I have a ridiculously even and tight pattern at 45 yards. I have over a 160 hits in a 10 inch circle. I had a 170 hits with longer slits in my shot cup but had holes in my pattern. He’s the man

Once again people must understand you NEED pattern width to even get close to fast flyers. All your patterns are hit or miss and if you hit, make some burgers and watch your teeth or chuck them away. Cyl or imp cyl with 1-1/4 oz steel 4 are all you will need for teal. Go to 3's for bigger ducks out to 35yds. This gives more leaway: the pattern width being 5 to 6 times the length of a duck. And before any arguments - been shooting 50 years and in the past shot 5 for 5! On teal and wigeon.

The design of the wad and use of buffer can determine the outcomes. I know of buckshot over #4 buck in nice patterns at 45 yards ,at velocities of 1400 min. Sprrads are at least 20 inches and they take fown deer.

All this is a bunch of Huey! Two of the greatest shots that ever lived, Richard Faulds and George Digweed don’t pay a dang bit attention to “patterns”. It’s important that the shotgun shoots where you’re looking. How it looks on a piece of paper is irrelevant. Like the old, saying, says “on a good day chokes don’t matter. On a bad day they don’t help.” Looking at small holes in the pattern is laughable. That pattern is a two dimensional picture of a three dimensional shot cloud. But I know most “experts” reading this will cry bs, and that’s ok.

if i was gonna get the SX4 hybrid hunter as my "do all" hunting gun for turkey, duck, maybe deer would you recommend the 26 or 28 inch barrel and 3 inch or 3 1/2 inch chamber? Thanks

The faster that a sphere is launched , the greater the rate it will lose it's velocity. Wind resistance on spheres is greater than other projectiles, so the faster round shot is launched, the greater the resistance affects it in speed and holding a tighter pattern.
