    Great game and a true test of intellect to play well! It is still published and a large number of people still play it regularly in the U.S. It is hardly unplayable and has relatively simple mechanics. Like Chess, it is easy to learn and difficult to master.

    Cool! I’m keen on picking up a copy if these rules (since you never can have one ruleset too many 😅). Have you tried Triumph! by the Washington Great Company? That’s what we’ve been playing mostly for the last couple of years and we find it fun. Easy to learn rules. It also has movement distances based on base width. You roll for command points each turn which means that you’re probably not going to move everything each turn but it encourages grouping your units so you can take advantage of group moves. The rules are for historical battles originally but they have a beta version of fantasy rules which is kind of an expansion and that’s what we play. We mostly play in the Warhammer setting though since that’s where we come from gaming wise. Give it a try (and do a video on it 😉)! Thanks for posting this video, cheers!

    When I solo'd a campaign, using Warmaster, I used the Solo Wargamers Guide. There's Commander Competancy rolls for how good a commander is; 1d6 I think, and it gave you results such as 'Great', 'Average', 'Poor', ect. I linked that to a Command Value from Warmaster, Great as 10, Average as 8, so on. It made it feel far more emergent having commanders with varying degrees of capabilities even in the same forces, and allowed for a few 'Ulric the Fool' characters to really outshine their old nicknames :D

    Soooo......about 50 years ago when I was a teenager I played a Starfleet game of some sort that needed a lounge floor or garden as a playing area. The ships were flat black silhouettes and were printed on a cardboard circle, they were about the size of a saucer I think. A string that must have been about 8 feet long extended from the centre and around the edge of each circle 360 degrees were marked - a bit like a 360 degree protractor. To fire at and hit an enemy ship you had to guess its bearing on the protractor, extend the string along that bearing and see if it crossed the silhoutte - so you might say "Fire two banks of phasers 60 degrees to port..." etc. Can't remember much else about it - but thanks for invoking the fond memory recall.....

    Controversial opinion. Federation Commander > SFB. 😆. FC was my first proper designer game and I discovered it in 2009. As a child of the 90s i grew up with the PC game Starfleet Command, which i later learned was the digital version of SFB. I haven't looked back since!

    • @picton101
      @picton101 25 дней назад

      Now I think about it a lot of video games were based on board games and have influenced my gaming life. Starfleet Command was SFB Close Combat was based on a digital version of Advanced squad Leader. Shogun Total War was a version of the 80s game Shogun, now Ikusa. Europa Universalis, was a board game then a video game and now another board game, which is amazing btw. And now they make board games of everything from Rainbow Six, to Rome Total War, Hogs of War and Worms. Anyway, enough of this tangent. Kzinti and Gorn all the way!

    We played this a bit bitd. There was a lot to like about it. But it was clearly made by people who thought D&D was too simplistic, especially the magic system, and didn't rely enough on tables, and wasn't deadly enough. Lots of pc deaths in my few games. It's definitely extremely well organized and comprehensive. But the best part to me were the critical fail tables for weapons. Hilarious. Overall, tho, way too much for me, and I like math. But I've borrowed from it frequently, and it's a constant source of ideas and inspiration to this day.

    Looking forward to seeing how your early battles go. I'm just wrapping up my last 10mm fantasy army and am sorting out all the stats using the Fantastic Battles rules. Hopefully within the next month I'll finally be playing some actual battles. I tried some practice turns and it started to gel but nothing beats the real deal against an actual opponent. Come on undead! 💀🎉

    Very much looking forward to a battle report from the campaign. Fantastic battles is such a good, fun game and well supported by its author - I'm always recommending it to people. Two friends and I are coming to the end of a campaign using the campaign rules in the rulebook - which work very well.

      Yes, it's a great set of rules. In fact, some of the guys are now using them for historical (ancients) 28mm games. Nice one! Do you use 10mm?

      @@DragonsTeeth2 Mostly 28mm, occasionally 15mm. I too use them for occasional historical battles. Had a memorable 100 Years War battle with them in particular. I'd like to try some more historical games with them.

    using less super glue is the key, a tip i saw and use, to keep the glue usable is to pour a drop on to a night light, no idea why this works but it does. Using a kicker certainly helps but im never sure the bond is as good.

      Thanks Terry. Yes, was def putting too much glue on before

    I use zipkicker. What I do is a little dot of glue on one side, usually the main piece. Then, I take a brush and dab some zipkicker on the bit (in this case, the wings), and aim and push. It will set almost immediately, so you have to be quick! its my preferred method though. Once it's in place, I use a little more glue and let it get in there and cure. Zap A Gap is best for this stuff, IMO. With 10mm stuff, the reason glue doesnt set is there ends up being too much glue compared to the surface area of what you're joining, so it doesn't cure fast when you press them together. Sometimes if you just wipe a bunch of the glue off and leave just a little behind, it will magically work lol. Those are sweet gargoyles. Kind of want some. Too bad my most recent order just showed up and I am overseas :(
