How to Use a State Machine in Unity (code 90% better than using bools!)
Here's how to use a State Machine in your Unity game. This is an excellent mechanism for keeping your code streamlined.
By using a state machine you can effectively control when your player in a walking state, versus a jumping state, versus a falling state, and so forth. Rather than by using boolean variables, which are likely to cause issues and bugs - a state machine ensures that your player is only ever in one state at a time.

I was able to succeed. This video gi...

When i added input * speed it said that * cant be applied to operands of type input and float
Sounds like you don't have the variables setup properly. You'll want to make sure "float speed" is declared at the top of the script and "float input" is declared within the Update() method. Feel free to share your code if you're still having issues.
@wildcockatielgames I got it to work but I didn't need to do what you told me I don't know but it seems like I made a little mistake somewhere
@Puppylad1 It was probably just a syntax error in that case - missing } or ; Glad you figured it out!
thanks, finally know what static does
Thank you very much!
thanks man you a g im still waiting for my download
Could you do a tutorial on Sun Moon cycle in Unity? It would really help because im trying to figure it out rn.
When I typed the code some of the words didnt change color they just remained white. Like monobehaviour, vector2, getaxisraw, ect. Unity gives me an error when I try to run it asking if im missing a using directive or an assembly reference. Not sure what any of it means really since im an artist not a coder lol
It sounds like you're missing the unity namespace import. At the VERY top of your script (above everything else) you should see some lines that start with the word "using". Does one of these say "using UnityEngine;" (without the quotations)? If not, add it. Also, coding is very case-sensitive so it should be Vector2 and not vector2. GetAxisRaw and not getaxisraw, etc.
Just wanted to say you are my favorite tutorial youtuber! Thanks for the clear and very well made videos you make. They make my life 10 times easier
Glad you enjoyed and thank you so much for the nice comment! Made my day.
Appreciate the short and concise video - exactly what I was looking for.
Amazing video, thank you so much!
The courage I have been building for 10 years to try unity again exploded at the end of the video
Those are beautiful assets! Can we see more of those?
It's a free pack from the Unity asset store. Link is in the video description. Here it is too: assetstore.unity.com/packages/essentials/tutorial-projects/lost-crypt-2d-sample-project-158673
I'd still be waiting for unity to finish reloading the domain by the end of the video from the first change
If you actually bothered to learn to code this would not happen.
Never happens btw
Yeah, I agree
I'm no programmer, but I can imagine: It can be tedious and downright frustrating at times, but when you FINALLY get it pinned down, the feeling of elation is quite unlike anything else.
That is a highly accurate description coming from a non-programmer 😄
Ever encounter a bug that just led to more bugs?
yep
"no experience" aka 5 years of experience
I see what you're getting at, but I'd counter that when employers are asking for experience they're talking about the time you've spent working in the industry doing game development, which for me was 0. You may occasionally see postings mentioning "personal projects are okay" but it's still a tough sell. I had also been working on my personal projects occasionally, on and off, so it didn't equate to 5 years of personal experience by any standard. I positioned it on my resume as 1-2 years of experience working on personal projects and needed to sell that as sufficient enough to get hired.
really cool to hear your experiences! The elaborate transitions and sound effects cutting to the same shot of you is killing me 😂Great video though
lol!!! I was learning CapCut while making this video and admit that I went a bit overboard. Some parts in the middle are less transitiony as I did those bits later and realized it was too much 😅
Very inspiring!
Hey all, this video is a bit more personal to me and a bit different from the coding tutorials I usually tend to upload. I actually spent a few weeks filming and editing this... and re-editing different parts. So please excuse it if some of the cuts seem a bit "jumpy". I realized part way through I needed to add some additional insight here and there... and remove a bit in other places. Ultimately, this is the true story of how I got my first Unity Developer job and went from being strictly a hobbyist to a paid game developer. One thing I didn't mention in the video though is the amount I learned about coding, Unity Development and team collaboration was x100 more than everything I had picked up when I was strictly learning game development on my own. Being tossed into the deep end was a learning experience unlike any other.
Underrated video
Nice video! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for watching!
I have a question, how did you make a row of sprites in an animation, sliced in equal parts?
I'm not sure if you're talking about slicing the sprites or tiling them. But both are shown here. 6:00 How to Split Single Sprites into Multiple Sprites 8:07 How to Tile Sprites
Oh thanks
I like this game! Wishlisted.
Thank you for the wishlist! We're excited for this project!
Ugh can you help me make a final project for school
Dam, I really like these tutorials for c# and unity. Keep it up.
Thanks, and glad you're finding value in them. Bunch more to still come in this series.
Good video!
Thank you
Thx for the tip :)
Perfect! Thanks! First approach also works with a world space canvas
Just what I need! thanks!
I found raycasting confusing for the longest time but once it finally made sense to me it changed my life in Unity and I'll never be able to look back 😄. Do you understand raycasting or do you find it to be a confusing concept?
Rly helpful thank you!
Thanks for the Motivation❤❤
This deserves more views and likes🙁
IT LOOKS SOO COOL
Thanks bro i'm learning from you. You teach me soo many things thanks a lot keep it up❤
So happy to hear you found it helpful! Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching!
I copied the folder into the Packages but I don't seem to find the UIPArticle component that you show. What may I be missing?
Did you put it into Packages? I put it into the Plugins folder. Also, make sure you're unzipping it first. If you put the .zip file there it won't work.
@@wildcockatielgames ok moving into the plugins worked 👍 however now I have a problem where in the editor it shows correctly but in play move shows all black. I dragged an particle effect to be a child of the Empty UIPArticle. Can we use any particle FX or do they need to be 2D only? any idea how to fix this "black box'ish" look?
@@palanolho82 I think I know what you're talking about because I believe I saw it happen too using certain particle effects. I haven't quite figured out the cause of that yet so I just ended up picking a different material for now.
Add the Awake() method seems to be the secret sauce. I've been banging my head for hours trying to figure out how to pass anything between different classes. I'm new to unity but I'd done lots of java, so this was really frustrating. I don't know why that worked or made the difference but I'm glad it did. Thanks!
Without seeing your code I can only guess but I'm imagining it would have to do with the order your code is being executed in. Since Awake is called before Start this probably ended up fixing the issue you were having. Glad it worked!
Im working on a school project and this helped mee soo much!! Good work!
Sweet! Happy I was able to help you out! Good luck with the rest of the project :)
Unity has a newer input system as well that we could use, but I find the legacy one much simpler to understand and works perfectly fine for a simple 2D platformer. Still, if you are familiar with the newer system, which do you prefer?
Your Mic is muffled
Yeah, I was trying a different setup than I normally do for this video and I'm not crazy about the results. It's because I wasn't directly facing the mic.
Ah yes! I always mess the Ui by making it not look the sayem. Great tips!
Understandable. UI work takes so long to do but its so satisfying when you get it to look and behave the way you want it. Used to hate it but now it's one of my favourite parts of game development. When working on a menu I find it helpful to occasionally swap between different aspect ratios to make sure there aren't glaring issues.
This is meant to be a very basic introduction to Unity animations and we'll be adding more animations in a future video, as well as a state machine to manage them properly. Unity also has a "bones" animation system, which can create more fluid and dynamic animations. However, to be used properly the sprite needs to be setup to have different body parts (eg. arms must be their own sprite, head, etc.)
Chapter 3 should be titled "Writing super long scripts" not "Not writing" -_-
You're right - chapter names were definitely a bit ambiguous. I updated them so hopefully they are a bit clearer and make more sense!
Nice tips, Thanks! Good luck with your future development :)
Thanks! It takes some mistakes to make some improvements :)
This tutorial pivots a bit and also talks about how to use the [SerializeField] attribute and how to refactor code, as it is part of an ongoing series. I just wanted to point out that encapsulating your data properly is an important thing to know about, not just for cleanliness - but for keeping your code secure and bug free.
Once again, thank you very much, I'm still tuned in to the videos!
Thanks for the continued support and the comments! Happy if these can even help one person.
