Austerlitz 1805 Rising Eagles Unboxing
I like this format, i.e., a jump right in playthrough in under an hour. Why are air units of opposing sides all the same color (light blue)?
Thanks for the feedback. As for the air units, you're quite right, a bit of an odd choice. The only thing to distinguish them (apart from the aircraft depictions which are quite small and you'd need to be very good on your WWII bomber IDs to pick out the Italian one) is a small nationality symbol on each one. Rondels for the Brits, Balkenkreuz for the Germans, and the three stick Fascisti symbol for the Italians. And all these are quite small as well. It would have been much better to simply have different background colours.
Thank you for this. I have this game, I need to get it to the table.
I think you'll find it pretty easy to get going.
I really like this “.system”
Nice unboxing!
Thanks for the visit
This is the same system as A Victory Lost/Awaits/Denies and Traces of War/Traces of Hubris. Revolution published a few of this series in the US, as well.
I have Hubris but haven't gotten it played yet, and recently got a used copy of A Victory Lost, same thing. So this is my intro to the system. Do you know which game is the OG? I'm guessing one of the Victory ones as they were all designed by Tetsuya Nakamura (actually, I think the Vuca ones are as well). So maybe 3 Crowns is just copying the system? I've been playing this one. I'm three turns in a really liking the random events and chit pull. Makes for a great solo game.
@@PushingCardboard Yeah they’re really good solo. Recently did Polar Storm on my channel. I’m not sure which designer did the first game, but I do really like how 3CG layers in some extra chrome on all their games to really take the system to the next level, IMO.
I LOVE those counters! No nibs, no ash rubbing off on me, no corner cutting.
I agree, they're perfect right out of the sprue.
I own all three games in the series, but I’ve only managed to play the intro scenario to Liberty Roads. However, I’ve played enough to know that I really like this system. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
I think I own one other one that I picked up in a used game sale that I haven't played yet either, so we're in the same boat there. I'll probably start with this one.
I think the dice were a crowdfunding add on. I purchased the game via crowdfunding and received the “special” dice packaged separately from the game. Almost immediately I began to read complaints about the game, so I don’t think’ I’ve even bothered to tear the shrink, yet. It’s a good looking game. Hopefully, they will get the rules sorted out soon. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
Rules are on v 1.4 and I've heard 1.5 is right around the corner, so it feels like the designer is working hard to clear up any ambiguities.
I’ve owned this game for years, but I’ve never played it. I’m sure it’s a good game. After all, it is a Raicer design. The only complaint I’ve heard is that it is too scripted, but I see Mr. Raicer provided alternate history scenarios. So, I look forward to your playthrough. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
Scripted, huh. That's definitely one way to deal with the France 40 problem. I guess we'll see for sure when it hits the table.
Подскажите как определить какое по качеству поле игры в данном издании картонное или бумажное что должно быть написано на коробке
It comes with a paper map, but a mounted map was also available for an extra charge. That said, GMT has recently announced that they are no longer selling this product and have returned the rights to the designer and developer. So who knows when or if it will be available in the future.
In addition, I M hopeful v 1.5 will clarify things and hopefullly address the remaining issues from prior editions of the rules!
Same here. The publisher has been great and very positive while faced with so much criticism. I hope it ends up with us having a terrific game.
GRANT, note that they have publishes Rules version 1.4 and are in the process in doing 1.5. Many rules areas not clear or simply not explained. So, a game evolving
Yes, I think I mentioned in the video that they are on version 1.4 of the rules. You can be a pessimist and complain that it shows the game wasn't ready for release, or be an optimist and be glad they are constantly making it better. I'm the latter.
Definitely looks like a '4X ! Less nice map though! When you play it we are waiting for your review. It would be interesting to see how it compares to France '40.
Noted! Can’t wait to see how it compares as well.
Hi Grant, thanks a lot for this „open the box“ video. I am sorry that some Canadian gamers really needed a lot of patience until the game arrived. I didn’t see in the video the customized dice? Were they not included in your shipment? Because some were asking: the game is available in Canada and the US at several retailers. The wooden cubes are „Activation Cubes“ and placed in the column of the corresponding formation that are activated (which can be activated up to three times in a turn with increasingly lower performance).
I'll have to re-check the box when I get home from my holiday. I'm in Montreal, and I saw copies on the shelf at the excellent store Valet d'Couer. They had the special dice on the outside of the boxes. And they sold the special dice separately as well
Thanks Grant for this great unboxing. I was on the fence when this was crowdfunding and ended up passing on it in the end and have been kind of kicking myself ever since. It really does look very nice. I will keep it in the back of my mind though. 😅
I'm sure I'll be talking about it at some point down the line, so you'll get my opinion one way or another.
Grant - top video thanks. I'm just setting up SM one day late for the anniversary and it's my first game in the series. Your video has really helped me.
Thanks, glad I could help. I recently finished an opposed play via VASSAL and I still love it.
"The guy could sell water to fish" this line totally cracked me up and I'm glad there wasn't anything in my mouth at the time. I really enjoyed the opportunity to come on the show and chat. Keep up the great work. Sent you an email regarding Night Drop 2, and Prairie Aflame.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for being my guest. It was good to speak to someone other than a designer for a change-up.
It would be helpful if you could contact the designer before the presentation, to identify the components and briefly why they exist. Thus you could explain the blocks or the other things that are somewhat nonstandard. A little something on the publisher would be nice. Also, identify what the game retails for and where it can be purchased.
Thanks for the feedback. Most of what you're asking for is more what I'd do in an overview or review of the game. For me, unboxings are exactly that. Open it up and see what's inside. But more info on the publisher is a good idea, particularly when it's a new or smaller company. As for the price, I imagine that varies depending on where you live. RUclips is international.
@@PushingCardboardThe price would be at the publisher. What varies is the postage/duty. If there is a question about components, the publisher would be happy to explain it, This answers some of the questions about the product and clarifies if the reader would be interested in buying it. Most of these types of games are expensive. They are buying more than paper quality.
@@dennisspors5264 As I mentioned above, these are more the types of things I put in Overview or Review videos. I have no idea how you expect me to contact the publisher with questions about components when I haven't seen the components until I open the box. Which I'm doing live on camera. Price I might be able to find ahead of time.
Thank you for the unboxing! It looks very interesting! Nice looking map!
Thank you too! I agree, these components have me intrigued.
Thanks for the unboxing. I'm now thinking that you might have been able to guess the nationalities that went with the different colors if you read a few vehicle names on the vehicle counters?
You are probably right. Or taken a quick look at the rules pages.
One of my all time favourites, John Butterfield is one of the best designers! I own the previous version but to be honest I usually VASSAL it!
I may play on VASSAL as well. But I never play on VASSAL unless I (or my opponent) own the game, so I still need to spring for it. Glad I did, it's a good looking game.
@@PushingCardboard same for me! I never play a game that I don't own (or one the other players). Of course, I always prefer to have the physical game in front of me but it's not always possible.
I've played and enjoyed some of the games on the shelves behind you.
Me too! Ha! In fact, one of my all-time faves is there. Rommel in the Desert.
Have both the Deluxe and the original West End Games version. Not played the new one but the original is a great solo game - having to make decisions based on limited(often poor) information really adds the drama.
A lot of solo-game designers reference the original when talking about games that influenced them. Butterfield is the first master of solitaire game design.
Their maps are outstanding. Big is better.
Good to know some people like them.
Thanks for another great video Grant! This game is fantastic...I know you're not a solo player but I highly recommend this one. Would rate it as my #2 Solo game. 🙂
I was thinking the same thing. I don't generally play solo games but I will give a go.
Board is double sided.
Just to advise Stuka Joe has made some sequence of play cards which you can find on BGG. Hope you enjoy the game. Many thanks for the unboxing.
Thanks for the info! Stuka Joe's play aids are always great.
Surprised to see an older game here. Anyway, I have played it twice, we had fun but not the type of game I particularly lust for.
Yes, I mostly do newer games. But every once in a while I slip in a "new to me" game. Glad to hear you had fun. I'm not sure it will be my cup of tea long term but I wanted to see how it worked. A used copy seemed like a reasonable price to find out.
is ti 1750 or 1850?
1750! Typo!
Interesting on his use of pointillism. It brought back memories of the television show Combat!. That show's opening had some kind of pointillism or some checkerboard design in the visions of the explosions, helmets, etc. Thanks for the review.
Glad you liked it. I was happy to share my thoughts on my favourite wargame artist.
A huge box full of air (95% guaranteed!!!). Thanks again, MMP! Seriously, all those counters can be found in the Core Modules, why would we want more? And those X pages full of overlays? *groans* So, the proper content is: 17 scenarios, four boards and 7-8 replacement pages (which are of course full of errata already). I will be looking for new BFP, LFT or Advancing Fire products instead of wasting a huge amount of money on this. Unfuckingbelievable
Thanks @PushingCardboard for doing this, you helped me save some money.
Yeah, I have no idea why this was sold as a core module and why it was so crazy expensive. Definitely on my "regret purchase" list.
Great review - thanks, Grant!
My pleasure!
Magnificent!
I agree! What a book!
I see 1-2p label on the box (0:42 time) but I can't find any rules how to play it solo? is it incorrect info or is it possible to play this game solo?
I don't think there are any solo-specific rules. Like many wargames, I'm guessing the publisher realizes that a certain percentage of users will want to play solo, even if it means playing both sides without any special rules or solo "bot". That's definitely how I do it, I play many 2 player games solo while I'm learning them. That said, while I did play this game solo to learn it, it's not a great solo experience in that there is a lot of hidden info. If you want a more detailed look at how the game works, I also did an overview video: ruclips.net/video/_KsxoGMait0/видео.html
Yep 76 here, well done and thanks, got my copy last week.
Enjoy! I hope I'm still cracking the shrink and learning new games at 76 as well.
I hear that ordering a wargame twice, can also be caused by drinking 6 Bourbons 😉
no comment...
Thanks for the quick and to the point video 🫡
Happy to help!
Nice looking little board!
I think so too. Very detailed topography. Who knows if it is part of the play of the game, but it's sure nice to look at.
Revolution just put up Shiloh First day for order yesterday.
I know! One day too late to make the recording of this episode. But I'll put the press release up on my website
Agreed about the rulebook layout. The index is great though.
Totally agree. Every game needs a good index, the more in-depth, the better.
Largest and most expensive wargame I’ve ever bought; but YIKES!, no designer notes? Maybe designer notes are only for 1st time designers. Seasoned designers with extensive catalogues can’t be bothered. What about unique aspects of the Utah Beach OOB and how it’s represented in the game? Nothing to say I guess.
No designer notes? Wow, that is lame.
That extra space comes in handy for the Tank Packs.
That makes sense, good to know, thanks.
Got mine on Tuesday, there's a lot in this box, looks amazing. Now comes the task of clipping the counters, ugh. Well done and thanks for sharing!
Have fun! Ha, I hadn't even thought about clipping yet...
Thank you. It does look intriquing. I'll have to get a copy.
Since publishing the video, I've heard there are some complaints about the rulebook. We'll have to see how it all shakes out.
Yes, flag art can be an annoyance. It bothers me to see the 50-star US flag in a WWII game (much less common of a problem) too. I like the unit cards in Assault, Panzer, and OST. I have the neoprene mats for the OST volumes and am considering cutting the maps up with a utility knife so as to just just the panels that I need for each scenario. Haven't had the courage yet to do it, though.
I hear you about the courage part...
Ah, very cool flag history there, I just learned something new today, thanks!👍 I love the unit cards for OST. The latest release for Mark's old Lock n Load Tactical system (Bitter Harvest) has begun using unit cards. I'm not for sure, but possibly the new Assault Games series may also be using unit cards. Hopefully soon we'll see games that keep all the data on cards, and you'll just see artwork on the counters. As far as the big boards, personally I love them. They do require some space though, that's for sure.
Glad you enjoyed it! The cards are funny. Way, way back, when ASL first came out with Deluxe ASL and the big big hexes, they introduced a similar thing, cards for every AFV with all the stats right there. They never caught on and were eventually scrapped but I loved them at the time.
Yep, it’s brand new with the Italians..
Definitely in the mix for playing each other at SD Hist?
@@PushingCardboard Absolutely! I really enjoy the OST system.
Am I imagining things or are both sides of the maps either the same or very similar to each other.
Nope, good eye. These are the a/b style maps that are like a regular map sliced in half and set together on the long ends. So they are more of a block shape than a long shape like regular maps. And to make them match up all the ways they need to, there is always an a and a b version, with the hex grid different on each side.
Vuca rocks. I played their new Traces of Hubris at CSW and it was excellent. One of the Vuca guys was at the convention and came over to give us some pointers (unfortunately our side was losing quite badly 😅). They are a great company and deserve all the praise they get.
Traces of Hubris is next up for me from them. Hearing Patrick describe it made me even more interested.
Thanks for all this focus on my 1812 game! As Patrick said the series will expand and work is underway on volumes on 1813 in Germany, a 1812 in Spain and a 1814 in France game. Assuming the series becomes a hit further volumes will be designed 😊
Thanks for the info! Looking forward to it.
thanks for your review very comprehensive
My pleasure!
