How fluorescence is used to help identify vintage glass
EDIT: My UV torch is actually a 365nm, not a 395nm! Sorry about that!
I've created this video to get a conversation going on the different fluorescent colors that appear when using a UV torch (a blacklight) on various pieces of vintage and antique glass. This is largely my best effort to make some sense of what I've observed in these pieces using my 395nm torch, and I don't want people to take my word as law in this matter.
Most importantly, I'd like to know what you think and what information you have to share. There is very little to go on in this field!

Irish Free State Officer's Sword (1920s)

This is a special edition of Small Joyful Things where I show you my family sword - an ornamental sidesword, one of the first made for the Irish Free State in the 1920s after the Civil War! There is an immense amount of history, both anecdotal and otherwise, about this sword, and I am so glad that it's in my family and we can show it to you. Major thanks to my father, John, and my brother, Seán...

That cadmium vase steals the show for me. I've been trying to build up a cadmium collection and so far all I have are a few small pieces, nothing even remotely as pretty as that vase... One day. :) And yes, every thrift store run, I bring along my 365nm blacklight. The "does this shelf full of clear glass contain any manganese pieces" swipe is a standard operation by now :')

I thought Your video on depression/uranium glass was the most informative, quick short video for the basics & for beginners who are new to this era of glass, antiquing, or whatnot . I just really enjoyed it. I’ve been wanting in about the different types of light that are on my flashlight that has six lights no I wanted to know what these lights are going to identify or what kind of glasses actually going to shine different colors besides uranium your video was really good just for ‘beginner’ basics. I loved it.

I recently bought a pot by the same artist. Mine is a type of wedding pot signed Arizona Digs 32. Same coarse pot and similar white etched designs. I did find a reference to some digs conducted in 1932 in Arizona. I thought at first that this might have been some sort of touristy item commemorating these digs. Now I'm not sure. I actually like the pots and love the intrigue. Someone certainly knows who made these.

The top rim looks like the sidewalks in Rwanda. While there, they referred to this basket as a peace basket. In Rwanda, they just referred to it as the Rwandan peace basket. It is on their currency. Some said it’s about coming together as one country, one Rwanda. No one referred to anything as Tutsi or Hutu while recently traveling there. Maybe it’s better to simply call it Rwandan.

Do you think the fluorescence of the glass showed at 18:46 is caused by cerium oxide? It is used as a glass decolorizer and usually causes blue fluorescence, actually, there is a company called Smart Elements that sells fluorescent glass beads doped with Ce3+ (they fluoresce blue). Also, cerium oxide (IV) has a density of 7.22 g/cm³ (Wikipedia) which could explain the glass weight. This oxide is widely used as a polisher and its price is not that high (compared to other rare earth compounds). So, I think it a good guess to explaing that glass fluorescence.

Very helpful. Thankyou. I have a blacklight on the way to me. Lots of glass to inspect. A few pieces of what I believe to be brilliant cut based on the cuts but am still a bit suspect as there is little to no wear on the base. Supposedly, the modern fakes show parallel striations in the cuts from the diamond blades as opposed to smooth surfaces from the old steel blades. All of my pieces seem to be smooth so its going to be interesting to see how the blacklight test goes. I have a celery bowl that has mistakes in the cuts and seems lighter in weight than similar size pieces. I’m very curious to see if that one passes the blacklight test!

Pilgrim Glass was sold all across the country in specialty shops. It was not cheap, but the small vases were affordable. They made a ton of them. We used to see these a lot in the antique stores but lately, they have kind of disappeared. The larger pieces are getting more expensive and scarcer. The cranberry wine & water goblets are to die for. We used to live not far from the factory in Ceredo, West Virginia, took tours and shopped at the factory store. It was wonderful. I need to do a video of our collection. We have many pieces that were never in the catalogs.
