Back in 1999, after having test ridden a TL1000s and a VTR1000F, though I liked the TL, I LOOOVED the TRX850. Smaller capacity. Less power. A parallel twin masquerading as a v-twin (and it sounded MUUUCH better than the other two). I bought the TRX. It was the best allrounder of the three and an awesome track weapon to boot! Not to mention 4.5l/100km. Oh. Did I mention the sound! 🤤

Ended up owning a Firestorm because a decent TL1000 or SV1000 never came up. Supposedly those come with even larger, 52mm throttle bodies. Did a short test ride on an SV1000 and it felt choppy and snatchy compared to the VTR. But I always end up thinking I'm missing out on the ease of tuning with power commander instead of fiddling with carbs, which I never had the courage to.

The KTM 950 LC8 engine, as fitted to the Adventure, SE, SD, SM and SM-T has 43mm CV carbs. They're in the air-box which makes them more difficult to access, but they work brilliantly. Especially when the air-box is fitted with a pre-filter and re-jetted to suit, as the additional restriction provides a little extra low-down punch. Fuel consumption was a steady 6.8l/100km (with the above mod. it was up to 7.2). The FI 990s that followed had awful FI, and to top it off, fuel consumption was worse and range was further reduced by the fact that the fuel pump inside the thank robbed a full two litres. Thankfully, twenty years later, the FI on KTM's 890s is spot-on. The ideal combination is the 990 engine (999cc) with the 950's (942cc) carbs on it. Perfect. Just over 100hp.

I can't believe it! That is pretty much what I've been dreaming about doing to my mk1 GSF1200S. Been looking for zxr750 fairing (the vacuum cleaner kawi) to get that endurance racer look. Never thought of an "early GSXR750" seat assembly, but it looks just right. So this bike is ready from the start - with better brakes! Some power above 6500 would be appreciated, but far from necessary. 207kg dry is even less than a naked bandit - and they are pretty light compared to the original UJM's of the early 80s.
