460 S&W Magnum: Bear Defense Revolver Review
Thank you very much for doing that ballistic comparison! Saves me the trouble of doing it myself. Being a hunter in the Eastern states, and not having to worry so much about long range trajectory, I've been leaning towards using the 220 grain, presuming that it would have greater wound channel and hydraulic shock effects. Your test has proven that to be true, conclusively. As long as shot placement is good, those are the only other crucial factors. Obviously, good shot placement is the ultimate factor, though! Thanks again, you done good!
I really apreciated the test. Also, thank you for not pulling the trigger with the empty drum
i see this comparison to be like the 9 to 40. for most scenarios they are mostly comparable in effectiveness. but when things start to become less 'normal' is where the 44 can have a more noticeable advantage
I really enjoy your videos, to.
Yet another video comparing 9mm + P amd 45 acp +P to STANDARD pressure 40 S&W and calling it a fair comparison.
About a quarter inch difference.
Nice!
Dad did better with his grip the second time around and his grouping showed.
This is amazing! Tell me please, whats the advantages or disadvantages of a 12 or 20 guage? And best place to get mini ammo? Thanks everyone!
@@Call_me_The_Breeze Thank you for the kind words. In reference to the 12 vs 20 gauge, I use a 12 gauge for dove and skeet while my friend uses a 20 gauge. In reality, the 20 gauge seems to do everything the 12 can. Ballistic wise, I personally like a heavier payload but in the end it’s a matter of preference. My friend feels the 20 gauge balances power and performance well.
Nice looking revolvers. The.10mm is reputed as having near.41 magnum performance. You can’t go wrong with either(as long as you have a handgun that meets your needs).
not by anyone who shoots them, especially those who reload. the 10 doesn't even come close to the 357
My 4" model 57 gets 1310 fps with the Remington ammo. Thanks for what you do.
You only shot the gun two or three times over the course of 2 years?
@@Ian-jg6pj I use various firearms depending on whether I’m making videos or just for recreation. I rarely just use one, thanks for watching.
It needs a Stealth Designs ARD.
Good thing in this big one upcoming u can fight entirely from the comfort of a picnic table in the shade🙄🔮⚰️
@@user-sl6tq9rv3o A good rifle rest takes my abilities out of the equation and really showcases the firearm’s potential with that particular ammo. Thanks for commenting!
1.2 MOA at 50yards. Definitely worth $800.
Mad u can’t afford? Work harder less comments on RUclips
Who in the hell pays $800 for an EXPS2😂😂 I still love ALL of my eotech’s
29 inches should be enough penatrate for anything 😮
Thanks that's a useful reference point 380 vs 40. Since state troopers used to use 40 for vehicle penetration, this flavor of 380 should be sufficient for barrier penetration. Good work, thanks.
I have yhe same gun but a dash 4,a well balanced gun😊
Perps aren't usually running around naked. Thats why I dislike bare gel tests
Bravo good job on a well done ballistic test between the 41 and 44 magnum cartridges in revolving pistols! As a specialty series bullet inventor, over the years in my investigations, I have discovered that the 41 magnum to be everything thing the 44 magnum is and then some more. Flatter shooting, better trajectory, in some cases a better penetrator. Keep up the good needed work!
Thank you for the kind words and commenting!
To my way of thinking your test means the Trophy Bonded tip left all its energy in the gel where as the Terminal assent kept it's energy through the gel.
Interesting well done test! Some tests results allegedly reveal that the 41 magnum round to have better trajectory and even better penetration. It depends on several factors especially with the ammo. Which caliber would you prefer for hunting or wilderness defense? Years ago the former owner for Foggy Mountain Black Bear Hunting Outfitters Wayne Boscowitz, (RIP) favorite handgun round for bears was the 41 magnum.
Great video. Do have some weights and percentages?
@@jrnbakken4348 Thank you for the kind words. The only percentage I would have is on the bullet retained weight of the 180 gr Trophy Bonded Tip at 96.8 percent if I’m not mistaken. Unfortunately, the other round was not recovered. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
very good--thanks --the flat nose of the .44 might have effected the out come a bit... but I am a 41 guy so good on you.
Wow this looked hard enough with pumpkins and a 44 mag. Now imagine the real deal out in the woods.
I have had better results with Underwood flat FMJs in some testing mediums than the hardcast. (If you are looking for some other video ideas)
Great vid. Can’t stand that interval musack !!
45 Scofield too.
Are these rounds actually a good round for EDC SD
@@Revolverguy38 I like a heavy for caliber round, and it seemed to fit the bill balancing penetration and cavitation nicely but I am now considering the 158gr Keith Type Hard Cast from Underwood Ammo in + P. It is a spicy and heavy round for the outdoors in 38 special. Nevertheless, for edc it all depends on your needs and ammo availability, good luck and happy hunting.
I like fusion it shoots fine in my rifle … thanks for the video 😊
Choice Ammo has a 265 gr 41 mag rated at 1415. That might have changed the outcome. If it lives up the the numbers listed.
Why did you feel the need to use snap caps?
@@punisher9oneone Primarily safety since I’m dry firing indoors but I am well aware it is okay to dry fire most modern revolvers. Thank you for commenting!
@@armus6748 fair enough
Those both did well for expanding bullets from standard shelf ammo. Both are more than enough for most chores when using Hardcast SWC bullets with higher sectional density. Let’s say a 300 grain for the 44 mag and a 230 grain for the 41 magnum. It would be cool to see this test done again with underwood hard cast for both.
@@jw-sigp2258 Thank you for sharing, this is a more recent test with hard cast ammunition.

Finally someone doing test not out of the muzzle 🍺 can you do more sir at 150 to 200 yards or more even ?
Well done. Both did well.
Different grain weights different velocities… both would do the job 😊
UNDERWOOD GREAT AMM0 !
you make it sound like there is a fatal bear attack pretty often. I only worry about the two legged rats that died failing to shoot me.
I used that 41 from Underwood. It was awesome ammunition at the range. But yeah the 44 is still more powerful, I can feel that recoil.
Good presenter. Like his structured approach to his testing.
Very good comparison and conclusion. Agree! Many thanks.
Thanks for the video.
There is not possible to say which one is better. Both bullets have pros and cons and both of them are designed for particular purpose. Everyone has to try it out and find the sweet spot, it means harmonization of all factors (caliber, barrel lenght, twist rate, usuall distance, type of game). Both bullets are damn good for sure. The ELD-X is originally sport bullet re-designed for hunting purposes, Fusion was designed as a hunting bullet right from the beginning. Here in the old country we have great results with both of them...
@@martinn.2563 Thank you for sharing!
Aframe has a bonded front core made much like the trophy bonded bear claw bullet with a heavily crimped rear core and heavy tapered cross member jacket. Fusion are electrochemical plated and are quite soft . They are great for hunting thin skinned game like deer and black bear. A frame is long proven for dangerous and heavy game . Hardcasts are not all made equal but usually perform well when a few factors are gotten correct. Actual hardness and alloy used and shape of ogive and size of meplat all matter. " Keith type" hardcasts are typically the Best design for deep penetration when paired with a lead/ tin alloy or similar extra hard alloy that prevents embrittlement.
@@coreymerrill3257 Thank you for commenting and sharing!
Great video Sir!
What scope is that a Nikon??
It’s actually a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40, thank you for watching.
The 45 ACP is larger in diameter then the 9mm and heavier. Penetration tells you nothing. The 45 has much more nock down power. 9:45
The Remington 180 round nose can and has flattened anything in North America 😊
What was the velocity of the 200gr
Unfortunately, my chronograph was malfunctioning that day but the advertised MV is 2810. Sorry about the inconvenience.
@@armus6748 a lot of the forums have people stating that they get over 2900 out of those, I have yet to see anyone state that they where even in the 2800 fps range
Not a valid control of variables. Each shot changes the structure/environment of the wood. You need to use 3 intact boards. Try to strike the middle of each. The flexibility is another variable that needs to be controlled.
