Brilliant orchestra. This march is one of Sousa's messier compositions. It's different, but lacks that memorable melody character of his other marches that registers immediately in one's memory. Here it seems he's snipped bits from those other marches, but the ensemble doesn't work so well.

28 seconds in and I had to stop listening. Yucky.

I agree with most comments, and it makes it apparent why a director is important. A lot of what’s wrong should have been noticed by the director and fine tuned over all the rehearsals. If it needs to be more staccato, he needs to *tell* them and work on it, for example. Faster tempo, of course, should be under his control, too. (Though when I was in chorus, our director practically broke his arm trying to get them to speed up sometimes.)

The movement of the bow needed to be choppier, not so smooth as it is here.

I played this at a music arts camp in sixth grade so I think this piece could be played for younger kids
