Best Buick Ever?
Not many people remember the original Buick Skylark. Built in 1953 and 1954, these were very special cars.

Did you know F1 once raced in Phoenix?
In the very early 60s when I was just starting school if not before the 57 Chevy was my favorite car, I told my family it would be a classic. Looks like I was right.....again. And back then people were not even talking about classics. My uncles first car was a brand new 57 Chevy. Our family car at the time was a 55' Oldsmobile Rocket 88 2dr/ht. Another 50s classic but nowhere the level of the 55-57 Chevies.
Its really a matter of opinion which looks better between the 53' and 54' cuz that 53' looks damn good.
14:30 He said Buick had something special with the Skylark. Get it? "Special". 😁😆🤣As in Buick Special.😋😂😉😁😛😅
Late 60s early 70s Skylark were stylish and sporty, then you had the Buick GS 455 muscle car based on the Skylark.
Do another video with the 53 and 54' side by side.
Brute T Full...Its Brutiful.🫵😁.
First, glad to see someone pointing out the value of books in this day of the internet. Second, the Chilton and Haynes manuals were and still are some of the best resources for someone doing any work on an older car.
The 57 was way better
Yea, the last good car Ford made.
My 74 roadrunner had a 318 good engine
Such a great narrative! How much study must have gone into developing it. Also the transition in the decade of trims, fins, options.... wow!
In Germany they work with books titeld now i help myself
still use them 😊😂😂😂😂
My first car in the late 80s was a 68 firebird with a 350 and a power glide tranny and those pretty rally wheels. Loved that thing. It took a beating from me and wasn’t garaged so it rusted and was in bad shape because I had no money in my college years to keep it up. Everyone called it “the fire chicken”. Sold it to a guy that did a really nice basic resto and he still had it as of about 10 years ago. Great video!
I like every Edsel. Nice to see they were able to get a replacement windshield for it .
I so want one
Vacuum wipers? 2 speed auto. No biggy.
Best Buick ever? Maybe. But. All Buick's are awesome.
@tinyb69 Not anymore today but when your talking the old school days HELL YEAH!!!!.
Boy, I hate to be a contrarian, but I disagree that this is a better looking car than the ‘53. Also, you failed to mention that even though ‘53 Skylark was built on the Roadmaster’s platform, it was a shortened wheelbase.
Love me some 1953-54Buick Skylarks but to me my favorite Buick of all time is still a 1965 Riviera Gran Sport!!!!!.
Chilton are like the Bible for cars 🤓
no mention of the unique troublesome hydraulic seat slave units
This car was manufactured long after slavery.
I had 2 uncles that drove Buicks exclusively for years !!!!! One of my favorites that my uncle had was his 1964 Wildcat !!!!! fabulous car !!!!!
The B had rust problems Have you considered doing a video on the Datsun 249,260 or 280?
I'd love to! None in the junkyard, and none in the museum right now. Somewhere down the line.
I have bought a Haynes manual for just about every vehicle I've owned. Even after the internet, I still prefer using a book. I can mark pages, write down the dates and mileage for jobs done, and it's always right there when I need it. I'm also the type of guy who would rather look at a map than use GPS. There are so many back roads that GPS doesn't show you. They aren't as quick. But are almost always more fun and interesting. Anyone under 40 really doesn't know what they missed out on. Growing up in the 80s and 90s. We didn't have the internet and smartphones. We had imagination and freedom. People can't hide or get lost anymore. Everyone knows where everyone is all the time. I feel sorry for young people.
I use GPS and smart phones but I still love a good manual!
Always wanted one of these beautiful cars. Closest I came was a 57 Fairlane. Loved that car, white two door. Going to the larger body style was a mistake.
Love the baby birds as well, although the bigger Tbirds sold better.
Ford Pinto was actually a very good Reliable car unlike the junk box Vega with the Lemon aluminum engine ..... 2.3 Ford Rangers from 1982-2001 used the same engine very little changes.... Rangers were incredibly long lasting trucks.
Delorean did NOT make a deal with IRELAND....He made a deal with the United Kingdom to build a factory in NORTHERN IRELAND, a region currently under occupation by the British. At any rate once Margaret Thatcher and the Tories took over in the UK she put the kibosh on any government money for his project, and the Delorean Motor Company was pretty much doomed after that.
To me and all my motor head buddies growing up in the early 60s, the 57 Chevy Bel-airs were the most beautiful cars ever sold. That’s not say that 55 & 56 weren’t good looking; but the 57 was in a word gorgeous in motion and sitting still. And to me personally: the little touches like the gas fillers being hidden in trim, fender skirts, and hidden cabin air intakes were just icing on the cake.
Wouldn't it be great if car makers hid stuff today just for fun?
The front bumper weighs as much as some cars today.
True, but modern bumpers are so much safer.
@@rickdebruhlcars Who's talking about safety?
@@joe-hp4nk Eff Safety! Styling is what counts!!
I would like to see a uk version of this Holden ? From first mad max .
Rick.I really enjoy your videos. Excellent and professional.
Thanks for watching!
I had a 71 pinto. It was robin egg blue. It took a lickin and kept on tickin. I wouldn’t mind having one now…
Back in 1974 I was 21 yo. There was a 1954 Buick Special 2 dr. for sale nearby. It had been fully restored. I bought the car and drove it for nine years. Wherever I went I got compliments. This video gives me great memories from my past. My car was two tone dark blue and baby blue. To start the engine, you would put the key in the "on" position then, depress the gas pedal which would activate the starter. Great car!
I didn't know that about the starter! Cool!
When I was a young kid our family car was a 55' Olds Rocket 88 2 dr/ ht. It had no parking gear. You would leave it in gear and apply the parking brake by pulling the handle on the left under the dash. When ready to start the car you would move the gear selector to neutral and turn the key then release the parking brake and put it in gear.
Thank you Rick
70,s road runners ugly
I had one of those cruising wagons in silver with the red yellow stripes on it 1977 with a 2.3 l R 2300
I’m surprised to see a Century IP was used instead of the Super/Roadmaster
53 had the Roadmaster, 54 the Century.
They should have never eliminated the Venta ports Jerry Mcdonogh
Cut two........ The tow truck arrives to pull your car out after the tide has come in hahahahaha
Fortunately it's nicely packed!
Really enjoy your providing the car's history, marketing perspective of the marketing department, the corporate direction and the advantages of the model changes.
It's a shame that one must be a gambler to drive one of these on the road today. It's not 'fair'. I also remember 'every' car used the Cragar SS rims back then.
Cragers were definitely the hot wheel!
My dad had that Firebird in Avocado green with the 400. But the car in this video is also gorgeous.
The hottest engine was a 389 with 3 deuces on the GTO, wasn’t this ever offered on the Firebird?
Holy crap, my brothers 1974 RR had a four speed with pistol grip shifter. He got it from a Richard Petty employee.
I always wanted a silver cruising wagon when I was a kid. Jeff Dunham has both the econoline and pinto in Silver, both fully restored.
The Pontiac name lives on down under ❤
I love 50s Buicks. But I don't think I would want to own one because of the suspension and rear end design being so hard to get parts for. I need a car with more generic parts so it's cheaper to repair
Thank you Rick
I was a 19 year old teen when this beautiful car came out. Couldn’t afford it but sure wanted one. Finally 40 years later I was able to purchase a classic.
