⭐️ "O du fröhliche" ⭐️ is one of the most famous German-language Christmas carols. The melody is based on the Marian song ⭐️ "O sanctissima" ⭐️ which comes from Sicily. The first of three verses was written by the Weimar 'orphan father' Johannes Daniel Falk (1768-1826), the following two were written by Heinrich Holzschuher (1798-1847). ⭐️ "O sanctissima" ⭐️ a Marian hymn, originally came from Sicily & traveled north by sea. The simple melody with the Latin text was sung by sailors in the evening as a tribute to their maternal patron saint, the Virgin Mary - and ended up in both Germany & England, where the song was first written down in the magazine 'London Review' in 1792. In England, the melody continued to be used in church contexts with new lyrics, including as the recessional song "Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing". In Germany, the Weimar poet Johann Gottfried Herder included the song in his collection "Voices of the Peoples in Songs" at the beginning of the 19th century. And it was here, in Weimar, that ⭐️ "O du fröhliche" ⭐️ was created, and under highly dramatic circumstances: Here, misery & disease reigned as a result of the Napoleonic Wars, and the writer & hymn writer Johannes Daniel Falk lost four of his seven children to the typhus epidemic that was rampant there. He decided to turn his suffering into something positive & founded the 'Rescue Home for Neglected Children', which remains a model for similar charitable institutions to this day. At Christmas 1816, he wrote a comforting song for the children he took in: ⭐️ "O du fröhliche" ⭐️ Falk took the melody - as already mentioned - from Herder's song collection, a sequence of notes that allows the harmonies to resonate in simple unison. If that isn't folk! What does the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" have to do with "O du fröhliche"? It's simple: both songs have the same melody in the verse. The Latin ⭐️ "O sanctissima" ⭐️ also came to America with immigrants & found its way into African-American communities there. Spirituals were often the musical basis for protest songs, and so "We shall overcome" appeared for the first time in 1946, sung by striking workers in South Carolina against the American Tobacco Company. A little later it appeared in the "People's Songs Bulletin", a collection of resistance & workers' songs. One of the editors was folk singer Pete Seeger. A typical folk phenomenon is also the mixing of different tunes to create a new one. Where & how exactly this happened is usually not known. Someone starts with one melody, someone else sings a second one, perhaps the whole thing works better with the text that way. "We Shall Overcome" is such a hybrid, the second half of the verse comes from another gospel song. But the journey continues even further: The same melody line as in ⭐️ "O du fröhliche" ⭐️ or "We Shall Overcome" appeared even earlier in America, namely in a collection of so-called "Negro" spirituals. It included the song ✊🏿 "No More Auction Block For Me" ✊🏿 a song against slavery. The "Auction Block" served as a pedestal on which the slaves offered for sale had to stand in order to be seen. Here, too, the original ⭐️ "O sanctissima" ⭐️ plays an inspiring role. The song was taken up by Bob Dylan about a hundred years later. From ⭐️ "O du fröhliche" ⭐️ to ✊🏿 "No More Auction Block For Me" ✊🏿, the churches of Sicily to Bob Dylan, it is admittedly a long journey that can also be read as a reflection of the ongoing migration movements of people at all times. 🌍 Something that is worth thinking about, especially these days at Christmas time...

Oh my Lord (so praise the Lord) But they were lost without You They needed You so bad (His light is shining on us) Oh my Lord (so praise the Lord) With the child's adoration Oh my lord (He is a personation) There came great jubilation Oh my Lord (so praise the Lord) And full of admiration They realized what they had (until the sun falls from the sky) Oh my Lord (oh praise the Lord) You sent Your son to save us Oh my Lord (this day will live forever) Your very self You gave us Oh my Lord (so praise the Lord)

Harry Belafonte was born in the New York City borough of Harlem to immigrants from the Caribbean islands of Martinique & Jamaica. When his mother returned to Jamaica in 1935, he followed her and lived with his grandparents in Kingston until 1942, when he returned to the U.S. In the mid-1940s, he left high school to serve in the U.S. Navy. Belafonte was evidently true to his Caribbean roots, as they catapulted him to fame, and his mother's interest and love for Garveyism laid the foundation for his own activism. Harry Belafonte joined the civil rights movement in the 1950s. He became one of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s closest confidants. Over the years, he organized demonstrations, raised money, and donated from his own resources to sustain the movement's activities. Belafonte was the first black American to win an Emmy Award, doing so for his first solo television special, "Tonight with Belafonte." Although best known for calypso, Belafonte recorded in many other genres, including blues and jazz.

Schneeball kommt geflogen in hohem Bogen Peter, Peter gib doch Acht! Was hast du da gemacht?! Auwei, auwei!

The band was founded by German producer Frank Farian, who was also the main songwriter. The four members of the official line-up of the West Germany-based band were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell from Aruba. Liz and Marcia sang all the vocals in the studio with Frank Farian, while Maizie and Bobby were dancers for the live shows. They enjoyed an unprecedented career together on the European continent and UK. One of the highlights was an invitation to perform in Moscow as the first Western pop group. Bobby Farrell died of heart failure on 30 December 2010 at the age of 61. He had complained of breathing problems after performing with his band the night before. His last performance was in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the city where Rasputin became famous and later killed. Farrell died there in a hotel room, exactly 94 years after Rasputin. He lived in Amsterdam for the last few years before his death.
