British version of you here mate. Can only back up all you've said. Spent 7 of my 16 years, mainly in the north-west with two years in Berlin as icing on the cake. My wife is NY born/FL raised and ex USAF. We've holidayed extensively in the years since my last posting there (1980). Spending a lot of those holidays in what was the GDR as I was determined to explore it once it became accessible. What a joy that whole area is from Goerlitz (stunning) to Bautzen to Meissen, to Pirna right through to the Czech border. As you said several times - I loved Germany. Now fortunate enough to be spending my dotage in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK but I still need my German fix every now and again. We also go through to Poland now and again (impressed by Poland BTW) Looked to buy a house in Bautzen and live out my years between there and the south coast of England but gremlins (as they so often do) brought that to a shuddering halt in 2008. Sat watching this with a bottle of Apfelkorn and watching this with a lump in my throat. My heart will always be in Britain (as is hers, even though she is four parts NY Sicilian) but the brain still wanders to Germany as is the case with a great many ex British squaddies who served in the era when we had extensive garrisons there. Can only agree with everything you are expounding mate. For those who've never been - you're missing a treat. The biggest problem is where to start!

My dream sheet was Hawaii, California or Texas. Germany never crossed my mind then. Low and behold I got Germany and at first really didn't care to go, but I thought I should give it a chance. I am so glad I did.

This was already the case when I went to Australia this year in 2024, my travel visa was attached to my US passport. And they did not stamp my passport either at Brisbane airport on the way in, or Sydney airport on the way out. It sucks, buddy. I am also the kind of person I would’ve loved to have an Australian stamp in my passport, but at least I got the memories from there. 33 days and wake up until I get to Vegas for Oktoberfest. And 243 days until I fly from my return to that beautiful beautiful city of Munich 🇩🇪

I also noticed that entering from France to USA. Last time I came April 2023, No more stamps. As French we have to apply for ESTA $21 valid 2 years.

The US has been requiring something similar to the ETIAS and I believe it is a lot more than $8. I also love my passport stamps and really missed when I did not get one when leaving the UK in 2018.
