Voices of Heritage - Remembering the Old Days
Просмотров 183Месяц назад
This is the 6th installment in our Voices of Heritage Series. I’ve selected several stories and put them into one article because they had a general theme. Papa and Granny are reminiscing about past hard times and good times. They share about living in a barn, picking cotton, raising kids, and the cost of things back in their day. I’ll let them share it in their own words and voices. The link i...

Make Your Own Buttermilk For Any Recipe
What about ''rain before seven - shine before eleven''?
An alternative explanation for ''the cat out of the bag''. From the navy where the 'cat of nine tails', an instrument used for beatings, was kept in a bag, A warning may be given, 'you will get the cat out of the bag' to warn an erring sailor that he may face this punishment if he does not improve his behaviour 'be careful or you will get the cat out of the bag'. Likewise 'not enough room to swing a cat' also mean the cat of nine tails, referring to a space where one could not swing one of these.
Is TN75D different size or height than TN75
One of my grandmothers used to help out in the dairy as a girl and could strangle a hen no problem. As an adult she farmed and started a shop. She started off by selling a few items on a window sill - then she graduated to a little table - then a big one! My grandad eventually built her a shop. Then she started selling gas cylinders and coal and eventually got petrol pumps. My mother was actually born in a clay , thatched cabin before all this! My grandfather built a better house completely by himself. He used ashes to insulate the walls! They don't make people like our grandparents anymore! From co Wexford, Ireland.

Wow love that you were able to know your great grandparents. I love all of what you have shared. We lived with my maternal grandparents until the passed away back in the 60s. I remember how different aunts/uncles lived close by. And if they lived a mile away we would still walk to visit. Sitting on our poach was especially nice with all of the shade trees around. Thank you so much for sharing. I also love hanging my clothes outside as well making sure my dishes are extra clean by my hands. God bless!
@@msdeec8975 I’m so glad you have such fond memories! Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your story with us!
As a baby boomer, I'm familiar with most of these and still use some. A variant of "the cat's meow," possibly the result of combining it with another expression, was "the cat's pajamas." "Dough" for money is still in use. You say that "and how!" hasn't been used much since the '40s? I beg to differ. I believe it's still quite common. I still use it. Tomato is usually pronounced "tomahto"? I've only heard that pronunciation from Britishers. "Wet blanket," "hot" (in both senses) and "to bump off" (usually only the verb) are certainly still in use. "It" is still familiar in "the 'it' girl," at least.
@@angreagach I suppose a lot of it depends on your age and area. Our friends in the western and northern parts of the US call a tomato a “tomahto” and make fun of our southern tomato pronunciation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
As a matter of fact, on the album "Cheap Thrills" by Big Brother and the Holding Company, one panel in R. Crumb's cover art features a drawing of Janis Joplin. The printing says "Vocals by JANIS JOPLIN!" and a smaller word balloon coming in from the side reads "And how!"
Along with "Cat's pajamas" was "The Bee's knees". It was a del;iberate mispronunciation of "the business" and if something was the bee's knees, it was just the greatest! Another term regarding our little striped pollinators is "Beeswax" as in "Oh, mind your own beeswax!" or mind your own business.

When I'm on my front porch, nobody stops to talk. They are too buried in their cell phones. Or, they just don't day "Hi", anyway. This generation on 40s and under have lost their social skills and don't know how to talk to anybody (and some older people, for that matter)..

My mother once said, many a slip between the cup and the lip. It meant that it wasn't a good idea. I remember it to this day because she was talking about my plans on who I would marry, LOL.
@@robin8973 Good one!
Thanks for the reminiscing. Youre very blessed to have these life stories and happy, simple memories of your ancestors. My mothers father is my only grandparent I knew. I only saw him perhaps 6 times in about a two year period as we were military and didnt live near family. He was blind and old and scary to me as a young girl. I didnt often have the pleasure of being around older people on military bases. I did know lots of nationalities that was very nice. My mother told me some stories of goung for aummers to the countey to her uncles farm. Perhaps her grandparents were there when she was young. She did say some of them spoke French and made NOLA type donuts and chicory coffee. They had fruit trees. My dads mother had lots of relatives but ahe died when he was nine. The other two grands died before I was four. Now, I have chosen the homestead life and winder what my relatives lives were like 😊

where did: cheek by jowl originate?
@@jocelynlevy9486 As far as I know, (which means there are probably more than this 😉) it has two meanings. One is a reference to taking an animal cheek by jowl when hanging them for butchering. The other one, and probably the oldest as far as I know, means pretty much the same thing as cheek to cheek. The jowl is considered to be the bottom of the cheek so if someone was side by side in a hug, dancing, or intimate conversation, they would cheek by jowl. If someone else knows another meaning, please share it!
