Lament for Finlay (Archie Kenneth Quach) - PS 024
Просмотров 1816 лет назад
PS 024 Lament for Finlay, Campbell Canntaireachd, vol 1, no 23. A slightly different and abridged version (no crunluath-a-mach is given, because it was not "orthodox") can be found in PS Book 13, pg 429. Performed by J David Hester, Alt Pibroch Club. www.altpibroch.com, learning.altpibroch.com, bibliography.altpibroch.com

The Sister's Lament - PS 023
Просмотров 2006 лет назад
Studies in Pibroch - The Sister's Lament Hannay-MacAuslan setting ca. 1810 This interpretation seeks to tell a story; or, better: to present an argument. The urlar is a threnody, a song of lamentation. In it, I seek to capture the keening of laments in the performance of the crahinins (solopsistically known as "echo beats"). The next motion is a statement, a representation of the terms of the l...
Too Long in This Condition/MacFarlane's Gathering - PS 161

Studies in Pibroch - Too Long in This Condition/MacFarlane's Gathering Hannay-MacAuslan setting There are several stories associated with this tune. It comes out of a song tradition, Thogail nam Bò ("cattle wrestling"), associated by Walter Scott with the MacFarlane clan, hence the title "MacFarlane's Gathering" Another tradition attributes the tune to Peter MacCrimmon "when striped of all his ...
Slan Fuive - PS 105

Studies in Pibroch - Slav Fuive (Health to you! Cheers!) C2.21: 54 Cambell Canntaireachd Possibly "Let's drink to plunder". Lovely interlaced structure. Ground and Cycles do not "fit", but rather supplement each other quite nicely. Urlar return performed after siubhal doubling after performer's discretion. Recorded outdoors and large competition - hence, some interesting dronewave interference....
Rout of Glenfruin - PS 013
Просмотров 4756 лет назад
Studies in Pibroch - Rout of Glenfruin. Hannay-MacAuslan setting. Another Battlefield Pibroch, this is performed in the genre of a taunt of the victors over the defeated. It is aggressive, mocking, arrogant. According to Ronald Smith, "The momentous conflict between the Clann Gregor and the Colquhouns of Luss had tragic and far-reaching consequences, and spawned a number of inter-related pibroc...
The Finger Lock - PS 132

Studies in Pibroch - The Finger Lock Hannay-MacAuslan. Acc. to the archives, this was performed as a reveille, and was even used to signal the last of the great rebellion leaders (Spanish John) at the end of the Third Jacobite Rebeliion. It was later re-interpreted as a lament. This performance seeks to capture the early martial interpretation: a wake-up, a call to arms. The apocryphal and fanc...
The End of the Great Bridge - PS 171
Просмотров 2536 лет назад
Studies in Pibroch - End of the Great Bridge Hannay-MacAuslan setting. This is one of The Battleground Pibrochs. It is performed as gatherings originally were performed ("full of life and fury" - Joseph MacDonald): a rallying cry. Nothing contemplative, this was meant to stir men into battle. No held-E cadences, unlike MacKay. Performed by J David Hester, Alt Pibroch Club. www.altpibroch.com, l...
Glengarry's March - PS 170
Просмотров 3756 лет назад
Studies in Pibroch - Glengarry's March Hannay-MacAuslan setting. One of the Battefield Pibrochs, performed as vicious taunt of victory over the vanquished. One apocryphal story relates how this was performed while the enemy was being burned alive in the church: This is no "lamentation", but a hideously arrogant mockery of the losers, taunting them over their cries in the burning building. Perfo...
Aged Warrior's Sorrow for his Old Sword - PS 172
Просмотров 2376 лет назад
Studies in Pibroch - Lament for the Old Sword Hannay-MacAuslan setting Lovely, neglected pibroch. Well worth pondering improvised cycles of motions, which could be quite elaborate, if one were creative. As it is, because it is a "small pibroch", it is rarely performed, and certainly never in competition circles. Performed by J David Hester, Alt Pibroch Club. www.altpibroch.com, learning.altpibr...

Studies in Pibroch - Finlay's Lament Campbell Canntaireachd, volume 1, tune 23 A discussion between J David Hester and Allan MacDonald, as we work through the canntaireachd and translate it onto the chanter. This is the only primary source version we have of this piece - canntaireachd. It makes it tricky to decipher when there are subtle rhythmic indicators.
Glencoe's March/Duke of Perth's March - PS 070

Studies in Pibroch - Glencoe's March/Duke of Perth's March Angus MacKay's book clearly indicates an "allegro" 4/4 time signature for the Urlar. Yet another piece of empirical evidence that Urlars and pibrochs had far greater range of expression and performance than what we play today. Performed on electronic chanter with live drone background by J David Hester, Alt Pibroch Club. www.altpibroch....

Does this mean Allan that fiddles were made before the pipes also I find some piobairechd to have less Melody in a view pieces of music and hard to get your head around and are best suited as practice Exercies the piob's that your discribing have been anglocized away from gaelic canntaireachd it would Be a great idea to make a song book that may parrallel the big tunes it may also bring out some gems Never heard before never mind the piobaireachd society this is our culture not a competition

I feel like this rushes quite a bit. I realize it's a software playing it but the piob idom is lost here. :(

      @altpibrochclub8212 5 лет назад

Never realized that one would consider this to be software playing these scores. Nope. It's me on an electric chanter. That said, part of the exploration done on these videos by the APC is to re-imagine what the idiom "is". We call it, "Re-extending the idiom by re-encountering the tradition." Is it accurate to conclude that this tune is a variant of "MacLeod of Gesto's Salute"? Yes, they seem related, but do you have evidence that Gesto's is older, or an original composition? Who's to say the piper who named his tune "MacLeod of Gesto's" didn't... borrow or regurgitate "Hiharin Hodin"?
