I am at point in my watercolor journey where collecting watercolors is more enjoyable than painting in watercolor. Any tips and tricks on how to paint more are greatly appreciated.
Mother Color Experiment

There is nothing wrong with a rainbow painting; but if you would like some color harmony in your artwork, try using a mother color. Payne's Gray mixed with other colors would make great night and winer scenes. The colors in the painting with all colors mixed with Green Gold remind me of evening light in autumn. A time of the day, a place, a season, a mood all generated from one color.

@@wdashwor thank you for your comment. At some point Winston and Newton pain was made in England. Now they are made in France. @@gabrielamorovan577 Interesting that they would change the formula. I was painting primarily in oils (and some gouache) in the Winsor & Newton, so I'm not sure I used enough of the older W&N watercolor to see the difference. One W&N color I've always liked for landscapes is the sap green-there's really no equivalent to it that I've found in any other line. Here I notice they don't include a vermillion hue, which is a color I want to try. What would you say the closest to a vermillion is in these?

Hey great to see this followup! I returned a Kuretake set I got and never unwrapped because I looked into the pigments and they were disappointing. (If you search for Kuretaki Gansai Tambi pigment chart and you will find one on their website. You're right, they make no claims about lightfastness.) From looking at the pigment chart it looked like the blues and greens would be pretty lightfast, but the reds/oranges/yellows/purples were suspicious. It's great to see your actual tests though. It turns out that "permanent" markers like Sharpie will also fade in light, and that can also kind of fool your eye when examining swatches. I suppose one could use india ink to avoid this problem, maybe if I ever get around to doing any tests I'll try that!!

Then I paint the entire strip with it. Let dry completely and then glaze…but only from 2-10 this time. Dry completely then glaze from3-10. Dry. Then glaze from 4- 10.
