Consider an Andover before buying an Audio Technica AT LPW30 LPW40 LP120 - This is beautiful thing
Hello Andy love your videos so ES in the Sony brand line stands for Elevated Standard. Also just watched your video on the Yamaha DSP-A1, I also purchased 1 I say on Facebook Market place with Polk RT2000P, Polk CS400 and Polk FX500 surround Speakers for 95.00 Dollars. It Is the Black version and as StereoNiche says it is not BPC (Black Plastic Crap). Love the Champagne color I am using my DSP-A1 for my 2 channel listening. Keep putting out great videos.
This Yamaha, that's featured on your video. It was very highly rated. When it was released. They were right up with Is the pioneer The older on Altegra. And even harden Carden. All that time. This Yamaha, the one you have was highly sought after. If I were you I hold on to this one? And enjoy it
I picked up the STR-AV950 this summer for $20. Other than being a little scuffed up, it sounds great. This thing is built like a tank! And it has a great 80's retro look, especially that sprectrum analyzer.
Yamahas RXV1-RX-V3200-RXZ9 enlightened me to a sound that my many vintage 1970s receivers could not match.I got them about eight years ago when they could be found fairly cheap compared to their performance.Almost all my vintage receivers are gone but the Yamahas are here to stay.
I have owned similar Yamahas in the past. DSP-a2070, dsp-a1000, dsp-a3090. While they do sound good the reliability issue is a factor. If you pick them up cheap enough though they are worthwhile as an entry point to decent sound quality at a budget. The ones I owned eventually failed and with the complexity of DSP chips they can be hard to troubleshoot and repair.
Agree… and this is a very good point. The repairability of all but the amp is nill
I have the DSP-A1 in black. I'll never part with it. The more you listen to it the more you like it. Worth every penny. I missed out on one like your's for $250 Canadian i'm still regretting not getting it . P.S. get the remote and download the manual. This thing is a total sound experience. Sound & Vision Component of the year.
Yes! Exactly! There was some review out there that was done a few years back that basically said the thing is still a contender! They over did the thing so much!
I think that SONY has recently lost interest in audio.
Yeah, I think they got distracted by electric vehicles and artificial intelligence
Loved the ending! Smash!
lol, I had to do it!
I've had my DH190 for around six months now. Bought it Open Box from Best Buy. So far so good. Haven't dropped it. Love the sound through my DA B65's. I had heard about the brittle motherboard issue but then I thought, "if it works when I turn it on then it'll probably be alright, so long as I don't drop it." Hopefully that issue doesn't arise for me.
Right on brother! You are right… sound great, don’t drop!
My brother likes the green button on the Sony I gave him. YT is now bombarding me with hi-fi products from Malaya - young workers running around barefoot with expensive looking sound gear. Thanks, Andy !
I've heard of the "green button" phenomenon - you're not alone!
I believe the ES in Sony ES stands for Elevated Series. I've got a 90s Sony SDP-EP9ES surround processor that I use in 2 channel mode, and it sounds great with my stereo system.
Man, that makes a whole lot more sense! Thanks!!!
The 190 has electrical problems too, see the ASR review, truly pathetic.
Yes! Yeah! You are right. I forgot about that! Thanks for putting that in the comments!!!!
Hello Andy. I recently found one of these 2000x relievers in my grandfather's house while cleaning out his finished basement. It doesn’t have power, though. It had to work because the system was still wired. It says solid state I think. Is it worth getting fixed
Absolutely! If you don’t fix it, sell it… someone will want it. These are great vintage power houses!
I found exactly this model at my grandparents. It worked for 5 secs and then stopped. Any Idea where to start looking for the problem?
If the belt is original, that’s likely the issue
You can make a pretty nice system around 1000. Instead on spending your money on a overpriced Marantz, buy a nice HK or Luxman receiver. My second system is a Luxman R1050, which i bought for 150 (mint but not working) spent 350 on restoring. Bought some big handmade dutch floorspeakers (translator impact 50) for 300 and a Denon cd / dvd5000 (38 poumds 4 x burrbrown dac chips) for 225. This one you can use also as a dac which i do. It sound very smooth and natural, you can listen for hours. Or buy a harman kardon amp like 6650r or pm665 for 150 -200 and you have a great start for a affordable great sounding system.
This is exactly my point. An informed buyer with some patience can really do some damage for the price of a Marantz. But, if the buyer just wants the Marantz, get it… it sounds good.
I've owned a bunch of 70s receivers including a few monsters from the stereo wars of the era. For reasons you have mentioned as far as costs I began my own search for an alternative. Several came and was resold immediately. That is till I won a bid on a Yamaha rx-v870. $20 winning bid free shipping. I'd say the seller lost money. Reflowed a couple solder joints and it was back to working order. Placed it as my main living room receiver, I instantly fell in love with it. Plenty of power, clarity, detailed highs and mids. A real solid performer. Not much to look at, basic and boring face but not horrible. For $20 this receiver surpassed all my expectations and I highly recommend it. It's still my main receiver and I'm on the hunt for a good deal on the rx-v870s bigger brother which is the rx-v1070.
Oh yeah, there are some hidden gems in the Yamaha world… stay tuned for the next video!
You can see clearly from your body language you are either exaggerating or fabricating
Wow, you caught me! Thank goodness we have a certified body language expert like you in the comments. By the way, did you also notice the alien sneaking in and out of the lower-left corner? No? Too bad-you really nailed the body language part, though. Anyway, you’re right: I ended up with 25, not 24. Didn’t feel like filming it again. But of course, you already knew that-my body language told you, even before I knew myself. Incredible work. Honestly, you should have your own show. I’m sure the world is clamoring for your talents. Thanks for playing! Bloop bloop bloop… game over, you lost.
Kirby
In 75 at 15, I had a used pioneer, couldn't afford a new anything. Around 95 I got a Marantz 2250b for a hundred bucks, refurbished for 125 bucks. Still in the woodshop running today. It's nothing special, other than a reminder of those magic days as a kid. Who couldn't afford a new Marantz! Guess it all depends on your era.
Exactly! So many folks want to experience that. I think that’s what is driving the market.
2245. For 65 dollars a few weeks ago
What!? Crazy sauce!!!
I have a Kenwood krv 8020 receiver that bought in 1989 still works and sounds like a dream. But a few months ago i replaced it with my NAD T748 from 2010. And that sounds better in my opinion. The Kenwood is 100watts per channel the NAD 80 watts...
Ohhhhh… stay tuned… I may have found something similar…
Vintage forever bluetooth never
Agree!
You should flip the advents over and see what they sign like stacked. Tweeters closer together. Just a suggestion. I have a set of KEF C75 that I modified. Sealed off the tweeter midrange part of cabinet and added a 8” passive woofer out of a C55. It really woke them up.
That is an interesting idea… I’ll give it a try!
I love the Marantz but those things were not worth much a few decades ago. The guy who sold me mine said in the 90s you could buy them in a pawn shop for $40. Now $1000... $2000... $3000 depending on condition.
Yes! Exactly my point. And what you can get for that kind of cash opens up all sorts of options!!!
I liked the marantz sound better. More clear, less distortion.
It does sound good… doesn’t it?
for a hundred bucks, get another one.
I’d suggest avoiding them and getting the onkyo… just a recommendation
I also have received damaged audio equipment from Shop Goodwill. What I do now is call the location I purchased from after the transaction has completed. And let them know about how in the past I have received damaged audio equipment. And ask them to please pack it carefully. I am always polite and respectful. Since I have been doing this I have not received any damaged equipment from them.
Polite and respectful always helps!
I want to buy one, but have $1000.00 can we make a deal?
lol, this one ended up getting parted out. It sat too long…
I have a dennon, which belonged to my late brother, worked for a while, 5 volt regulator went out, fixed that, tgen the phono stage got really bassy, i just put it on the shelf and am using an old Kenwood, the stereo fm stays muted. Old stuff always needs service now.
True, it does. I am always amazed when something comes in that’s 50 years old that still works… then something 2 years old and just out of warranty comes in broken. 😞
I will Always use 'vintage' equipment, but I have so much of it already that I am unlikely to Need to buy more of it. That doesn't mean I WON'T buy more --- I definitely will if I can get it for a good price.
That’s a good perspective!
Got a J33, DD linear tonearm with programable track selection, like picking my fav tracks
Guys are dying off. Others have already scratched the itch. Hoarders will be looking to not get left holding the bag. It is over. Sell your stuff now.
Interesting perspective, explain the rationale behind “everyone is dying”… most of my customers are 55-65 years old… they keep coming in as they get the itch and more and more are getting the itch.
I had the newer version of this in high school, the RS-2002..it was also 20wpc, I then moved on to the Fisher CA-2220 50wpc integrated amp to the RS-2010 100wpc Fisher Studio Standard.
So, you’ve been loyal to fisher? What speakers did/do you use?
I used that Denon for 10+ years a friend lent it to me because he moved into a apartment and it's a great amp, had tons of clean power
Agree… highly rated receivers but very overlooked on the second-hand market!
I have a mint one that was hardly used, and I am not sure about the sound to be honest. Strong bass, a warm sound, sort of tube like. It seems its better suited for Otis Redding than say Led Zeppelin. But its very musical and detailed. So there's that. Its the sort of receiver where you play something usually streamed through my DacMagic and I think "oh wow, thats so cool" and then I listen another time and its just a sort of warm 1970s sound and I'm not sure its the best. So while I recognize it is a very cool receiver, I haven't made my mind up about it.
That’s a great perspective! The older receivers can sound foggy if they are all original. Once recapped they get their detail back. But, they do have a classic sound so often digital can sound better.
I'm a Denon 4806 fanatic and the last one I got cost me around $100 bucks with shipping on Ebay...Seller said it was untested...So took a chance... All seven channels work and it sounds wonderful...6volt pre-amp section, THX Ultra2 certified...Will run over 100 watts per channel RMS with all 7 channels going and is stable to 3.2 ohm...I've never had a 3803 but I've installed many 3805, 3806's 4306's (6 volt pre amp section on 4306's also) and they would run 4 ohms with no problem...Even the newer and cheaper made 3808's could run a 4 ohm load with ease..The 4806 Will knock your socks off..In 2 channel mode I saw a review stating that with two channels driving 8-ohm loads, it reaches 0.1 percent distortion at 188.1 watts and 1 percent distortion at 210.3 watts. Into 4 ohms, the amplifier reaches 0.1 percent distortion at 277.6 watts and 1 percent distortion at 352.0 watts. They can be had CHEAP in many cases...4 rows of heatsinks and the round transformer checking in at 52 pounds...They cost around $4000 dollars out the door in 2005/2006...One of the best hidden gems on Ebay...They come up often...
This comment got me to go out and look… now I want one!
@@kappandrew1 If you are talking about the 4806 they are truly at another level..Even at very low volume the sound quality is far superior to any of the 3 series Denon units and all the 4 series..Including the newer 4308 that was $2800 new..The THX Ultra2 certification means that it has to play clean at reference levels (105db) and is suitable for rooms up to 3000 square feet...I have a 4806 in my living room running 4 Yamaha ceiling speakers, 4 polk audio bookshelf speakers, 2 Sony Tower speakers and a large Polk center..4 of the channels are running at 4 ohms, the other 3 channels are 8ohms...Just effortless insane power and sound quality, but hey, for $4000 dollars back in 2005/2006 in HAD to be awesome...If you get one make sure that the serial number starts with 6 as they are the newer versions that can still actually be ran with a phone app.today..They also seem to sound better than the earlier versions..I think Denon ramped up the power on the later units due to Yamaha having a unit out that had more little more power... And get the owner manual...You can set manual time delay and configure each channel with a separate EQ or select all for the EQ to set all channels the same..Also has built in electronic crossover for highpass...It needs to be connected to a monitor to set up...😎
I had one for a bit. I mostly used it for HT use. However, for 2 channel use, I think it was the worst AVR I ever heard. A little dinky Onkyo TX-2000 sounded way better. Other than bass and power, it had no character, completely boring. Just awful. I had a couple comparable Sony AVRs that were much better for 2 channel duties.
Stay tuned… Sony is coming up…
Had a 3803, then a 3805 back in the day. Better sounding than you'd assume.
Agree! And cheap now!
I paid my technician $800 to bring my SX-850 back to minty freshness (included a one year warranty).
That’s the going price. It takes so long to service one of these!!!
The Marantz is maintainable and repairable. And worth repairing. The Denon when it fails, is likely landfill unless inexpensive repair. The Denon is less likely to be around with over 25 years of age on it.
Agree… I pull and keep the transformers, sell the dials and feet… the rest hits the landfill. They still have a few years before they start to fail in mass… but you are correct!
WTF is a Kerby?
Extremely expensive way overpriced vacuum cleaner company.
My spirit animal
Got an untouched 2230, recently I made some changes, external DAC, an Emotiva amp and speakers and now use the 2230 as a pre-amp and I am impressed at how much better it sounds from my previous set up.
DENON Avr-3300, $1000 new back in 2001 🤔. Absolutely dynamic for Rock or Jazz low-end bass power ⚡! Im guessing the 3803 your showing was a few years after my 3300 unit. Had it since at my local home theater specialist store 23 years ago. They carried everything from Pioneer Elite to McIntosh equipment. Looking to upgrade now since obviously no HDMI or USB-c, or WiFi of course.
I remember wanting one soooo bad back in the day. I just didn’t have the cash at the time…
You're comparing a low end Marantz to a high end Denon. Get a 2270,2275 or something that was considered higher end to do a proper comaprison. I assure you, that Denon does not have as much low end or punch as one of the better Marantz power amps or receivers.
I agree... but then comes the debate that, if I were to spend 1,500-2000 dollars on a 2270/5/85 etc. now... when doing a compare, I'd have up to that same amount right? With that kind of money you then get into some serious competition from boutique Sony/Yammy/Pioneer as well as NAD, Carver and others. The point of this series isn't to call anyone's baby ugly, it's to question... "if I had $800 what could I get". Honestly, you don't get much anymore. But there are some good deals out there.
@@kappandrew1 thats not really fair either because those prices for vintage Marantz are a recent phenomenon, people have realized the topology and quality and repairability as well as the collectability of these silverfaced receivers.. The 22xx series could be bought for a few hundred bucks like 8 years ago, some could be had for as cheap as the 2000's, 90's stuff like that Denon AVR. The topology of the older 60s and 70s receivers is unique, through hole type , hand built, versus the 90's 2000's best buy stuff, which are all littered with mass made CNC stamped SMT disposable IC electronics. There is a reason why they are so cheap. They are basically unserviceable. As far as finding cheap vintage there is a Marantz tax now so you have to look at other brands like Technics, Sansui, Nikko, Rotel. Those can still be had for reasonable prices. And I will stand by my statement that pound for pound, watt for watt, for music, the older dedicated stereo stuff blows away more black box AVRs with a few exceptions, that Denon not being one of them. way too much in the signal path to have any transparency whatsoever.
@@kappandrew1 there is a reason they went up in value. Those newer 90s, 00's best buy AVRs are mass manufactured SMT type pcbs littered with ICs and are all basically non serviceable disposable electronics. The vintage stuff is hand built and of a much higher build quality, is fixable and collectable. If youre looking for cheap vintage, marantz is literally the opposite approach ("marantz tax"). Vintage technics, Rotel, Nikko, can even find some Sansui sometimes that would be watt for watt a much better comparison.
@@resistorstudios I restore vintage audio gear as a hobby and i specifically go after more obscure brands that are less in demand. I do this to keep them around so when all the popular brands have been restored in the next 10 years there will be more of the less popular brands around for people looking for budget friendly options. Claricon, Optonica, Soundesign, Realistic, Fisher to name a few. My fav thing to restore are less popular speakers. I customize them heavily so they look and sound sweet so no need to chase after high end models that people want in original condition.
I have a vintage Scott receiver that was gifted to me from my late next door neighbor. Yesterday I hooked up my Bowers and Wilkins speakers to it and played some Moving Pictures by Rush. Was pleasantly surprised by the sound of this 20 watt receiver.
@@bradleydurbin6784 its because its underrated..depending on imp load..that unit will deliver more..thats the old school secret.. its almost 38 watts into 8 ohm..and 60 watts into 4 ohms. Even though its rated at 20 watts.
Don’t need many watts from old school equipment… folks are obsessed with “I need 100 watts”… yeah, true… if you go buy a new receiver you probably do. Not the old stuff though…
@kappandrew1 haha. I wish I could show you my genesis physics collection.. just so you know I run 900 watts a side on my antiques..and 1800 on my subs.. haha..I build and repair amps for a living..I hand built amps for rockford fosgate in the 80s..
What is the efficiency of your speakers? Low watt receiver needs more efficient speakers. The denon has a lot more wattage you would expect more punch, especially if the speakers are inefficient.
They are 1980 rebuilt LaScalla. They run somewhere around 105db efficiency. Each receiver is set to 75db at 500hz before listening.
@kappandrew1 klipsch are about as efficient as you can get. Perfect for that marantz. I have a set of epic cf-4's that l picked up at the goodwill a number of years ago for 100 bucks. Most I've ever spent on hifi. I have a mid 60s Fisher 400 that I picked up for 20$ that eventually I will recap. I keep moving backward in time, although I picked up an onkyo 2 channel receiver recently from the 80s, which is quite nice.
800$ for a 50 year old 30 watt receiver is crazy in my opinion.
Dude! I totally agree... and that's why I am doing this series. I have sooooo many folks "hell bent" on getting a Marantz and I'm like... but you could do better for less.... Marantz isn't bad; they sound freaking awesome as hell but, they don't fit into everyone's budget.
@vincentrockel1149 I agree and some of these receivers are going for over 2k, some even more than that.
Pssst...Sony STR7045. Totally underrated receiver and goes toe to toe with my Marantz 2270. Easily. Also a Yamaha CR-1020 comes a close second to Marantz 2500. Mind blowing. I have a 2500 and was surprised as was my wife at the sonic clarity and musicality of the Yamaha. Oh the Marantz was totally rebuilt and the Yamaha wasn't. That ought to tell you something. Low power receivers are amazing sounding work horses.
the price is "realistic" just like the prices of a new McIntosh or Bang & Olufsen
@damirhlobik6488 if it's been recapped, maybe... otherwise, it's 50 yo electrolytic and nothing lasts forever.
marantz's sound is wide, clear, and unrestricted while denon's inclined towards a bit pinched, narrowed, and restricted. i like the marantz.
I completely agree! I love the warm sound of the Marantz... especially on some vintage Pioneer or JBL. It doesn't do so hot on modern speakers though... IMHO
Great watch - im now lost in a wormhole of google trends, hadn't used it before. I'm about to upgrade my vinatge system, so youve given me some faith to pull the trigger. Thanks
DO IT!!!! Hell, worst that can happen is you learn something new. This stuff is so easy to sell right now.
I've had 70s and 80s Marantz receivers. Loved them. But today, I need built in Bluetooth and opt inputs. Would like a new receiver with in/out for separate equalizer but none have that anymore. Also, I'm way too lazy to get up to change volume, station etc. So remote is mandatory also.
