Vegetable Garden Soil Sampling
Просмотров 1005 лет назад
Join these friends as they expand the vegetable garden. Florida's sandy soils are great for root development, not so good for water and nutrient retention. Should we add dolomite or lime to "sweeten" the soil? How do I submit a soil sample to University of Florida? Join these friends as they tag-team to collect soil sub-samples. Notice the guy in the chair? He's 'supervising' to ensure samples ...

Creating Draped Hypertufa
Просмотров 43 тыс.7 лет назад
Using repurposed 100% cotton towels, create your own container. Flexible molds are "double pots', with snug fitting interior absorbing the weight and pressure, helping to keep base flat. Pots need to cure slowly. Misting and covering with plastic bags may be needed depending on your climate. Before planting, leach with water to reduce alkalinity. Sandspur, reduce the seed bank.
Просмотров 8 тыс.8 лет назад
Sandspur, sandbur (Cenchrus spinifex, C. echinatus) may put a damper on outdoor activities. What may be done to remove bur this year, reduce seeds in the seed bank and prevent growth next year? Dragging the area with old fabric or carpet may be one solution. Contact your local UF/IFAS Extension office online at SolutionsForYourLife.ufl.edu. Email: savemygarden@ufl.edu

Hi Laura, you are correct. Portland cement mixed with other ingredients in correct ratio will help make a study product. Two issues come to mind when it comes to flimsy tufa. firstly, only enough water should be added to the mixture for thick gravy consistency. Since the COTTON towel is wet when added to the mixture, it will dilute the tufa mix. Also, depending on where you live, humidity does play a part in how long a product takes to dry. Generally, the more humid an area, the less water is needed to allow for a "slow" cure. Finished basement? keeping the item moist by misting/covering with plastic to control drying. Hope this helps.

Thank you for replying. Its not a finished basement. Ive tried to use less water but it wont stay on the material. Im having a hard time trying to figure this process out..lol. I thought it was going to be easy but dang it Im having a hard time. Some of the concrete on the pots that are dry is flaking off. But I will keep trying.

Hello..I have a question. Ive been trying to do the draped hypertufa pots. But mine are really flimsy or are not drying. What could I be doing wrong? I do them in my basement. Im wondering if its to damp in there? I do believe Im mixing the right amount of the ingredients. I am using Portland cement. Any tips would be helpful. Thank you.

Draped hypertufa workshop is a two part program. Material fee covers container gardening practices, tufa instruction, Master Gardener assistance, towels, tufa mix, glove, molds to support your design, plants and potting media. After the second week, you will have created a planted draped hypertufa. Material fee is $15 for gallon sized pot. Check back for next 'tufa workshop at UF/IFAS Extension Levy County.
