How To Answer Any Standard Acid Base Calculation | MCAT Content
In this video, we will cover how to sequence acid-base calculations by using a calculation concept map. We will build our map up by understanding how the conversion in the p-scale (pH, pOH, pKa, and pKb) are the same as well as how we convert between K-values and concentrations.
After we have built up a simple version of the map we will learn about how to convert from Ka and Kb values into hydroxide and hydronium concentrations and finalize our map. Throughout we walk through example problems.

Solving Serial Dilutions | MCAT Content

In this video we will go over how to solve regular and serial dilution problems. While I will introduce the equations that underlie the approach to serial dilution problems we won’t be relying on them since I find it easier to use a simple 3-step approach to solving these types of questions rather than setting up a series of dilution equations. Math Tricks for SI Prefixes | MCAT Math
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.2 года назад
In this video, I am going to cover how to work with SI prefixes. This includes a quick recap of the math behind the SI prefixes and how this helps us quickly convert them into scientific notation. As well as how to go convert from one SI prefix to the other. Lastly, we will round our discussion of SI prefixes off by discussing what happens when you cube or square an SI prefix. Want to support t...
Understanding pH, pOH, pKa, and pKb | MCAT Content
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
Do you ever get confused about whether a high pKa or low pKa corresponds with the most acidic solution? Same with pOH? In this video I will cover how to keep these concepts straight by introducing the idea of the p-scale, the underlying scale that describes pH, pOH, pKa, and pKb. By understanding the underlying concept behind all of the different p-values we can not only keep the values and wha...
Metabolism Memorization Made Easy: Enzyme Names | MCAT Content
Просмотров 9 тыс.2 года назад
Metabolism as it is taught in most MCAT review books and videos is made to seem like nothing more than a slog through rote memorization. A series of reactions catalyzed by specific enzymes with no underlying logic other than this step is catalyzed by this reaction and produces this product. And to be fair when I first started learning about metabolism I saw it this way and would spend 20-30 min...

    Should we use these same strategies for Chem/Phys?

    • @EightfoldMCAT
      @EightfoldMCAT 4 месяца назад

      Chem/Phys is more straightforward than Bio/Biochem but the same general approach shown here works really well in that section too. If you still find yourself struggling with Chem/Phys then it is likely coming down to content gaps, trouble with some of the step by step problems common to physics and chemistry, for example finding an oxidation number, or an inability to recognize the more subtle ways the MCAT hints at content material in questions.

      I definitely do end up talking a bit fast in some of these videos. I have gotten similar comments on other videos and when I get started making videos again I am planning on being more mindful of how fast I’m talking. If you find the videos a bit to fast YT does have an option to slow them down so they are at a better speed for you.

    Quick question! Want to preface real quick that I'm LOVING your videos so far. I was wondering about the Question #2 in this video on the enzyme not needed. I was wondering, in case this comes up in the exam, if one should assume mRNA is already available, or if it has to be transcribed (hence needing RNA polymerase to get the final recombinant DNA product). Also, since Reverse transcriptase has DNA polymerase activity, can it turn the ssDNA into dsDNA? Thanks again for making these videos, they're honestly THE best quality I've come across so far.

    • @EightfoldMCAT
      @EightfoldMCAT 4 месяца назад

      Sorry for the slow response to this. Go ahead and assume the mRNA is present. Reverse transcriptase can generate dsDNA by itself but for questions like this (it’s based on an AAMC one) don’t overthink the content too much or get super lost in the details. Think about what makes sense with the flow of the question when taken simply. Generally the correct answers on the MCAT tend to align with this way of thinking. They really aren’t trying to trick you although it can seem this way if you haven’t done a ton of AAMC material because many third party materials do have gotcha questions.
