This looks awesome
You need a few million tris in your scene for nanite to actually start having some sort of positive effect. Thats only because you're looking for the best looking mesh that doesn't have any of the popping lods have to offer. That also means you need to have an absolute beast of a machine to run anything with millions of tris and meshes in the scene. Wu Kong is the perfect example of why it worked for nanite for high end streamers and low budget gamers don't have any ways of playing it without stuttering and overheating. In theory, the more unreal develops nanite, the better it will work, but as of now. No mid range pc will be able to run it in high fps even on low settings. Plus virtual shadows are enabled on nanite that costs even more performance to have a nicer shadow. Plus virtual texture... The majority just dont have a 4080ti 16gb lying around to play your "good looking" game. But hey, people asked for graphics for the last 10 years. Now they're getting the absolute best graphics they ever had and are crying. Guess devs can just never hear the end of complains when they try something new 😂
If you have a "High" preset for LODs, Nanite would be the "Ultra" preset, it doesn't optimize, it was made to render the highest possible geometry without burning your machine.
use standard LODs, even fortnite, epics title to show off their engine, will perform at 8 fps with nanite enabled, i enabled it no other settings changed and the performance dropped from 60-70 to 8.
Why not take time to optmize your models and create simplified lods instead of relying on this wonder button? That rock face could probably be done with half the poly count if you fake the smaller details with normal maps or bump maps.
Can use impostors as well.
The first example of the clip is a very bad case to use nanite. please just use standard lods
any developer that uses nanites in UE5 need to stop. its killing our performance

You forgot Nanite is garbage for performance and polycount doesn't matter: It's quad overdraw.

To be honest ... Nanite doesn't have much real world uses .. using lod is alot faster for games and less on the CPU .. nanite needs to be able to work alot faster ...
Nanite is good for the developers. Not for the gamers. Developers abuse it and it costs crazy performance on some games. In Silent Hill 2, if you disable it, you can gain 10-20 fps (depending on hardware and scenery).

It's really helpful, but I wish you made a master material with a proper scaling texture as an example rather than an object texture.
I am planning on doing an update video down the line. There are better methods that I wasn't aware of when I first tput this together. I agree that an object texture isn't the best way to go.

I'm sure under the hood its very complicated, but whats the difference when the artist creates different LODs? Does nanite eliminate the need to manually create LODs?
Yep. LOD you need to create manually and only shift between the amount you've created. Where nanite automates that's process entirely and allows for much better optimization when it comes to rendered geometry
@@lucidrainstudios you can create automatic LODs. Nanite is more than LODs, but I'm honestly not sure if it's worth using over those for standard 3D assets. For megascans and such you do need it for sure, but does billy need / should use it in his project? Idk.
The difference is that Ninite is the Quick and cheap way, but costs a lot of rendering budget. Not recommended if you want good performance.

Thats a super cool looking creature! It kind of gives me stranger things vibes. If you're ever looking to upgrade it a little, during a chase, or just when it needs to move faster, it dropping to all fours and galloping after you with a sudden speed burst would be absolutely terrifying, especially with the contrast to the fairly slow current movement. So far though, this looks great! Keep up the great work ☺️
