Giga della fata morgana

Some time ago I wrote this little gigue as an exercise. Obviously Bach-inspired. Sometimes in life it seems you have almost reached your goals, but suddenly you realize it has been only an illusion - a fata morgana

I play Hardanger music on violin all the time just by tuning the lowest string up one note. So instead of standard tuning, GDAE, it becomes ADAE. Then you can play most of the tunes in D and have an easier time with the open drones. Plus tuning the low G string to A resonates with the A string. Helps in the fuller sound. I play Irish and Scottish music mostly, and especially with Scottish music in A, this tuning is very useful. The resonating emulates that “highland” sound. It also is effective in Irish music, for tunes in D or A. Alternatively, if you’re not a stickler, you can do GCGD or (G#C#G#D#) for a lower sound, as I hear in this video. Many Hardanger recordings and fiddles are actually higher than a violin, as in BEBF#, and some of Knut Burn’s albums are played in CFCG! Very high. Hardanger fiddles are somewhat smaller and maybe the musicians use alternative strings, though…

@@erikm8372As I found out on the comment section of the tune in thesession.org: "I met John Joe Tuttle in Miltown about ten years ago. He told me that Bobby Casey did indeed get the tune from him, but that he himself had learned it via the Paddy Sweeney 78. Since Sweeney’s setting and name (despite the typo on the label) were the same as that in the Roche Collection, I’d bet Sweeney got it from the book. O’Neill’s setting (one of his “Mills Are Grinding” tunes) is in a piper’s version in an A mode rather then D."
