I think the problem with the loot chests is that they don't want to let you shortcut the quests using them, which greatly restricts their ability to provide meaningful rewards.

Just a few plot corrections you may find interesting. Atrus is half human and half D'ni, born on Earth in What would become New Mexico around the turn of the 1700's. Atrus, does not create the world's of Myst but uses The Art to Link to pre-existing worlds in the "Tree of Infinite Possibilities". Finally, D'ni itself is not on earth but under it, about 3.5 miles below the New Mexican Desert, Almost directly where The Stranger (your character) found the Book linking to Myst in the first Game.
