Yup!! There's nothing wrong with tropes or common monsters, but I wanna help expand your games world and give your players a fresh experience against monsters they'd never think of.

Very true, I just try to use mostly non homebrew stuff that way everyone can get a similar experience.

I was also surprised that there are so few reviews for how well this book did as a Kickstarter and how amazing the content inside is! And ooh!! Nice nice, what's been your most memorable moment with the biomancy wizard? And yeah!! The Mycellian have such an interesting lore about them, that it can really open up your story to so many different possibilities.

I think it was when we wanted to cross a shallow part of the river but that had very rapid streams and we wanted to get our wagon filled with mimics (we were delivering them so it was important to ensure their safety) and our donkey over. I had picked the trimorphism surgery of the day so he could enlarge himself without concentration. After a little discussion if it could stack or not since it technically wasnt a spell like this i was allowed to cast enlarge normally on top of it to become huge and carry the wagon and the donkey over the river. Which is normally i would never be able to do as a wizard of all things. Like this is barbarian or runeknight fighter territory it was kinda hilarious that it was the partys wizard who did the musclework and did it well. Biomancer in general if you use the biomancy spells in Helianas make for a very interesting mid range buffing support and very tanky espicially if you lean in with high con (this wizard had a 20 con believe it or not)and even emergency healer since the biomancy spells heal a bit of hp if used.

Of course! I love hearing fun DnD stories and seeing what wacky plans others can concoct. And oh, very interesting cargo you had. Were you supplying Dungeons-r-Us or something, haha? But that's actually a pretty cool and clever interaction. I'm glad you were able to break the mold and outshine those muscle heads! Show em the power of being smaht! And I totally agree with you, the biomancy spells are all so cool and unique. I like that they allow you to kinda perform other roles and really open up your utility by a lot. Though some are very situationally specific, I think they all have a decent place and use case.

Hahaha, oh yeah! These puppies come packed full of damage! It's honestly crazy how much damage they can do, especially because pack tactics almost guarantee they will always hit. I love wolves and any wolf/dog variant monster. My friends literally used to joke about how I had a homebrew wolf for every level and region and type in my first campaign

Oh, definitely the babau and the fire newts. My own GM mind said "ok, but why not both back to back?" After a heavy combat, having the babau come out of the lava as well.

I think it's great, cause it gets everyone involved in a little RP and let's them set the tone for how they want their character to be seen.

I'm unfamiliar with gurps 4e personally, but I imagine the tracking, harvesting and crafting systems should translate well enough. In terms of the tracking system, the only thing I see being different is the DC or roll required to be considered a success. For harvesting and crafting you would just exclude the concept or need to gather and use essence to craft items and the food recipes. In heliana's they have many tables that go into detail about all the necessary materials to craft items. You could easily use this as a skeleton or framework for the materials present in your GURPs 4e game. Crafting mundane/nonmagical items are also present in the book! Depending on how nonmagical your campaign is, I can see issues with trying to use the new races and subclasses. But I think the new tamer class could be reflavored or tweaked easily enough to fit a nonmagic setting. Instead of capturing them in a magical device, you just tame them normally and have a menagerie of creatures following you. I hope this answers your question!

Arcane spell failure? Does that mean spells have a chance to just not work?

@keyydarkfoundry yea if you're wearing armor or have a shield your spells have a chance to fail and use your spell slot/prepared spell if said spell has a somatic component.

Really?! That's crazy, I guess casters in 3.5 are meant to stay fairly squishy then, if youre not up for that gamble

I hope you get to paint yours or am not sure if you went with the Touch of Darkness. If you did, then i can see why you would'nt want to paint them. I think my team and i had some bad ju ju and we got unlock on the rolls ha. Stress quickly took us out and we had a few close calls with deaths door. but it was fun.

I'm sure it brings the level of immersion and excitement to another level seeing the painted minis on the board! Sadly, I did not get the Touch of Darkness for my minis, so I'm stuck between seeing if I can ever force myself to paint them or find a friend to do it for me haha. Luck is the most important skill in this game for sure! and yeah, those close calls and high tension moments is what makes the game so much fun to play!

I would think so too, but most of the tables I've played at and have DMd for, treat it as both looks and social skills.

I switched to 5e fairly early on in my ttrpg career. I started out with starfinder after Uni, but my DM moved, so then one of the other players in the group took up the mantle and introduced us to 5e. Everytime we do one shots we try out new systems haha. What system did you first start with?

I've been playing for 20+ years myself, and i see a LOT of DMs treat any stat lower than a 15 as 'below average'. 12 Dex? You cant run up stairs, you are too clumsy. 10 Wis? You cant tell the difference between a turtle and a rock. 14 Str? you can barely carry your gear.

This has been my experience too when I've played at my local game stores. Even my players when they were new, treated any of their stats like they were dump stats if it wasn't +3 at minimum.

You're right about it being a bit more broad, but I find my players and the tables I've played at treat it more about their stomach strength. Cause roleplaying a super healthy body isn't as clear as your stomach's strength.

I see your point and agree, the whole purpose of these shorts is just to give a fun goofy example of each ability score. The 1 minute time limit does put a strain on how much information I can give while still being entertaining. This sounds interesting, could you explain what "Touch AC" and "Armor damage reduction" is/looks like in play? Cause I'm fully in agreement with you. I always try to create scenarios where every player can shine at my table, utilizing their subclass or backstory. I like to make sure there isn't just one all star

@@keyydarkfoundryEssentially you get 3 numbers to handle instead of just the one with AC. You have an EC [Evasion class] this acts like classic AC and is 10+Dex mod. Then you move on to AR [Armor Reduction]. To find that you take your Armors AC and subtract your EC. This means armor class is actually rating your armor not your ability to not get hit. Now there are two ways to go from here. Either negative results for AR mean a damage buff for the enemy attack or AR can't be negative. Either way if the roll to hit is over EC but under AC the AR kicks in and either reduces or increases the damage. If the attack is over the AC it was a penetrating attack and does full non-reduced damage. All criticals are penetrating. This system allows heavy armor players get to play the tank that can take repeated small attacks while still not wanting to stand in front of say a dragons breath attack. There are more intense calculation versions but I steer clear of those as at that point you might as well be playing another TTRPG. The bonus to this is it gives the DM more variety in making custom Armors that add or subtract from the AR via curses is great. Not to mention players can just have blacksmiths make higher than vanilla AC armor to get that higher AR. Oh and strength & Dex limits are the same as they are in vanilla mostly. DM alters at your own risk. Also encounter planning with the idea is +1 weakling enemy per 2 players. This does ignore magic classes because honestly with every book releasethey are gain more utility at the least.

Very interesting idea. I can see where it can alleviate some of the problems of Dex being so amazing and heavily favored. Though it does seem a bit crunchy at first, especially with implementing it for new ish players. Thanks for explaining it though! I always love hearing new ideas for how other DMs handle rules and such at their table!

Boo! Fake rogue! Get your own class features, haha. Monks can get very crazy though, I just feel they lack umph at the higher levels like late tier 3 play and such.

I wouldn't say they suck, they just lack things they can really do in my opinion. The group I play in has two monks, and they deal some serious damage. The problem is they only have 2 tricks and once they burn their ki points or have to chase a monster down they're done for.
