What Makes A Film Great?
Просмотров 4805 лет назад
There is a longstanding debate in philosophy about whether it’s possible to come up with objective ways of determining if a work of art is good, or great, or beautiful. We experience art intellectually, emotionally, physically, and, importantly, in a specific cultural context and with a worldview shaped by the culture we grew up in. We also have personal likes and dislikes. Some of us love the ...

Why Did The South Secede?

Why did the South secede from the United States in the American Civil War? The reason why southern states seceded from the Union following the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was to protect the institution of slavery. But how do we know? The timeline of events, as well as common sense, appears to support this view...

WRONG !!!!! The matter was about the South paying more in tariffs than the north (notice my prejudice in the spelling). As far as slavery goes, that might have been one factor, somewhere down near the bottom of the proverbial totem pole, but it was not the chief issue. The north was playing the "card" both ways.....while they were bellyaching about slavery, THEY were running sweat shops that utilized child labor. So how the hell were they any better up north ? I say NOT. The South had every right to secede, and once they declared such, we became a whole 'nuther country down here, only to be militarily invaded by the tyrant Lincoln, whose only interest was in "preserving the Union". The Confederate Handbook by Curtis Patranella explains it better than I can.

Your south I'm north. Under my administration my government takes your land. You were paying 30% tax. Well now you have to pay 80% What are you going to do, fight for your right not to pay taxes to me, or pay the tax? Under my government. Keep in mind if you don't pay me. You're a racist. Although I have not freed my slaves yet. I plan to after the 13th amendment Ulysses s grant this means you too. Like rn. We hear the govement is here for us. They're our protector doing all they can to keep us safe. You know bascially Gods position. But otta save us from trumps grasp to harm us. Back then slavey was viewed as a right. They were probably taugh slave trade becasue just like the kids today are taught to hate our country and base everything off of their feedings, race ect. Government control is the problem. And always has been. During the events of the civil war. Both north and south started to view slavery as immoral. the north made more money off of slavery than the south. I have another question If slavery was the main issue. Than why did free yes i said FREE African Americans and native Americans willingly yes i said WILLINGLY join the confederacy? I know why native americans fought. I have some in my family. The union was killing their food. Women and children. And destroying their homes. And sacred land. But that narrative isnt what the government wants people to know. Yes some southern slave owners. Were shit. Inclduing the black slave owners. But don't forget the north had slaves to. In fact alot more than the south had. How do you think they funded the war? Yo we tryna end slavery. Pitch in a few dollars. Its a worhty cause. I can take a moral issue(slavery) During the final months of the war, and use it to my advantage. First i offered the south to keep their slaves. Just pay taxes to me. Join under my government. That didnt work. Cuz why? We don't wanna pay the bloody tax. It wasn't about keeping slaves. Even tho it was viewed as a state right. How could i uswe this to my advantage? Ill free every black man. But you gotta go on the front lines(expendable) War is nearing a end. Im getting that 80% tax. As lincoln im labeled a hero. Freeer of the black race. But truth is he was a tyrrant. Im not sorry for what JWB done to him. Not sorry at all. Anybody can read about the civil war. But nobody digs deep enough to realize they been lied to. By the same system that won't teach actual history. Like how the black race came from africa, sold by other africans. Slavery exists to this day. And all races have either taken part or have been a victim of slavery. No one is exempt. Or special. Literally people complain about the system. But support it. It baffles my mind.

You made a really long video and missed a simple idea. The states rights argument simply refers to a new states right to decide for itself to be a free state or not. Nothing more. The idea that the South simply heard Lincoln won the election and then states began to secede is supposed to be a serious description of reality?

The northern states WEREN'T trying to abolish slavery. Not only were they not particularly concerned about slavery, some of the northern states actually profited off of Southern slavery. The abolitionists like Frederick Douglas were the exception to this rule. President Lincoln even promised that the Southern states could KEEP their slaves. But the southerners were fearful that the abolitionists would start a slave insurrection, such as happened under John Brown. This is one of the reasons the South seceded.

Tennessee actually went as far as to say that they didn’t want to comment on their secession. However, if you read the previous speeches of Confederate State of Tennessee governor Isham G. Harris, it’s very clear that Tennessee’s secession was fueled by the threat of the abolition of slavery and the state’s refusal to comply with Lincoln’s call for troops to fight their fellow southern states after the fall of Fort Sumter.

Was it about slavery? You bet it was The Constitution of the Confederate States of America Article IV, Section 3, Clause 3: "The Confederate States may acquire new territory; and Congress shall have power to legislate and provide governments for the inhabitants of all territory belonging to the Confederate States, lying without the limits of the several States; and may permit them, at such times, and in such manner as it may by law provide, to form States to be admitted into the Confederacy. In all such territory the institution of negro slavery, as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected by Congress and by the Territorial government; and the inhabitants of the several Confederate States and Territories shall have the right to take to such Territory any slaves lawfully held by them in any of the States or Territories of the Confederate States." This provision ensured the perpetuation of slavery as long and as far as the Confederate States could extend its political reach, and more then a few Confederates had their eyes fixed on Cuba and Central and South America as objects of future conquest. So, tell me again how the Civil War wasn't about slavery.

This just says to me that states rights weren’t being upheld. I think slavery is wrong, don’t get me wrong. Also, I believe more and more modern technology would have made slavery obsolete. These states had their own laws and systems. Albeit racist but the north was no different. The 3/5th compromise, minstrel shows, and exploitation of African Americans in cities are obvious examples. The civil war was fought over states rights, the rights of those states to practice slavery. The North went to war with the south over succession, not slavery. Look at the time gap between the emancipation proclamation and the start of the civil war. I do not support slavery at all and it is evil. However just saying “south is bad and racist” is stupid because the north was just as racist.

You are a bad historian. You are taking history out of context. Of course the south was pro-slavery but the question is what did pro-slavery and anti-slavery mean in 1861? A pro-slavery position was that the south had equal rights in regards to the western territory. Anti- slavery meant no free or black slaves allowed in the territory. By confusing what these words or positions meant in 1861, you are injecting presentism and counterfeit moral virtue on the north. Southerners lived, ate, and often times went to church with black men and women. The north wanted no blacks in the territories because they wanted the territories for free white labor. The reason for secession and the reason for the war are not the same. Equal access to the territories was essential to being in a union. The south did not care for central banking, high tariffs, subsidies to corporations. There was no authorization for these programs in the constitution. The reason for the war must be explained by looking at the northern position. The north could not let the south go because a south with a free trade policy would have devastated northern industry. Cheaper goods from Europe would have been purchased by the south. It would have wiped out northern industry. Northern politicians discussed this in Congress and in state assembly's. Loads of primary evidence back this up. Most southerners did not own slaves. Additionally the north was heavily involved in financing slaves and was responsible along with Britain for the carry trade. Africans came to America on British and Yankee ships. The south had no part in the carry trade. Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee stayed in the union. When Lincoln said he would use force against the states to collect a tariff those state seceded from the union.

Not true. Again, this very declaration of secession makes no mention to tariffs nor to free trade. The only time it even talks about taxes is in relation to the 3/5s rule. If those things were truly that important to them, you'd figure they'd spend a lot more time talking about it in their declarations rather than bitching about slavery. These are VERY SHORT documents that are readily available. Read them before spewing bs

    • @libertycoffeehouse3944
      @libertycoffeehouse3944 6 месяцев назад

@@Jane-qh2yd You do realize that the north passed the Corwin Amendment that would have made slavery permanent where it existed. Slavery existed in the north as well as the south. New Jersey and Delaware had slavery until 1865. The border states all had slavery. Northern banks were involved in financing slaves. The north was involved in the carry trade. They were using slave cotton in northern factories. Slavery was legal at that time. The issue of slavery pertained to western territory only. The northern states believed if they limited immigration to white northern settlers, that when they applied for statehood, they would side with the northern states on tariff, internal improvements, and a national bank. The official detailed reason for secession was provided in the CSA congress. It was the official reason for secession that the Confederacy gave to the world and the USA. It is called "Report of the Committee on Foreign Affairs." This explains that the slavery issue was not for moral virtue but to get their way in congress over the political economy. It goes into detail on the tariff issue. Also the secession documents do mention the tariff issue and corruption over fiscal spending form internal improvements. The Civil War is the watershed event where the government was turned over to corporate special interest. When was the corporate takeover of America? The Civil War. When did the government become highly centralized? The Civil War. When did we get big government? The Civil War. There did not have to be a war. The north could have allowed the south go in peace. The total death including civilians is about 1.2 million. Lincoln did not care a hoot for the slaves. He said they could "root, hog or die." The union was a voluntary union. Lincoln made it an involuntary union held together by force. My defense of correct history is not a defense of slavery. To the contrary, by teaching false virtue of the north which did not exist is to perpetuate the real reasons for the war and to this has serious consequences for our understanding of government overreach today.

The Soviets had no ability to attack the island nation of Japan. Their navy (what little there was) sucked and they had no strategic Air Force. They were a one trick pony land power. Even then they still received enormous logistical support from Great Britain and the US. The emperor was smart enough to see the writing on the wall and did not want to continue to see his people slaughtered by the tens of thousands until there were no cities left and then invaded. By the time that happened the Japanese army would be fighting with not much more than spears and swords while the allies continued to rearrange the ruble from the air and, due to civilians and soldiers refusal to surrender, killing millions. By the second atomic bomb they figured out that a single bomb leveling every city vs hundreds of bombers and thousands of bombs leveling their cities would mean that they could not bleed the allies white and negotiate better terms. They were a dead man walking and had no more leverage. Nothing.

The reason breastfeeding is important for jaw growth is the acquisition of proper tongue posture which will not be developed from bottle feeding, as the cheeks are used instead of the tongue. Without proper tongue posture, the maxilla does not have the support to develop forward, leading to a recession of both upper and lower jaws. Mandibles are often always the same size among individuals (see Mike Mew lectures for more on this) and it’s mainly the positioning of the mandible that causes problems.

But of course, no historical context was given. The South's grievance regarding the North's attitude about slavery was centered on the fact that the North objected to allowing any more slaves into western lands south of the Missouri Compromise line. And why was the North adamant about this? Because of the provision in the Constitution that allowed 3/5 of slaves in any state to be counted towards Congressional representation. The 3/5 clause gave the Jeffersonian southern states more power in Congress and the Electoral College than they otherwise would have had. This hampered northern desires to dominate both politically and economically. Jefferson would not have won the election of 1800 had there been no 3/5 provision. Think about that. This was the whole foundation of the north's efforts to resist the "expansion of slavery" They did not give two hoots about the welfare of the slaves. It was the slaves' presence in any new Jeffersonin states carved out of western lands that concerned the north. For example, if 300 thousand whites and 200 thousand slaves formed 3 new southern states, then 3/5 of those slaves would count towards Congressional representation (120 thousand in total). This could have a significant impact on the balance of power. The north was slowly beginning to dominate in Congress due to immigration. It was just a matter of time before they could cast aside any restraint on their economic aims imposed upon them by southern representatives. The Republican Party was not so much against slavery as it was against the SLAVES! Thus, the mention of slavery by 4 of the 13 seceding states in their declarations of causes was in THIS context.

Excellent points. When it comes to revisionist history, the belief that the North (as a whole) was on some great crusade to free the slaves is revisionism at its best. Sure, there were the abolitionists like Frederick Douglas and John Brown. But, by and large, the average American’s attitude towards blacks and slavery weren’t much different in the north or south. Most didn’t own slaves and held prejudicial views typical of the times. It always comes down to money and power in the end.

If they stay in place, it could lean either way, or a mixed bag.....It doesn't matter what his friends/coworkers say or think about his parenthood.....The south had about 4 million blacks...at least 1 million black men fit to fight....yet only 3000 to 5000...Less than 1%....of black men of fighting age....or about 0.1% of the entire black southern population.......fought for the south........Meanwhile the north barely had half a million free blacks...........Yet they found over 170,000 black men to volunteer and fight for them.....about 97-98% of all black civil war veterans fought for the North.........Even though the south had 80-90% of America's black population. Almost all the black confederate soldiers were slaves who were never paid and were only allowed to fight at the very end of the war when the confederacy got desperate. Where as blacks were paid and allowed to fight for the north halfway through. The northern states had started to give blacks the right to vote.......not a single southern state had a single black voter.......Even South Carolina with a 60% black population had Zero black voters. The northern states had sanctuary cities and passed personal liberty bills that staid f**k the constitution and refused to give back runaway black slaves.....All southern states honored the recapture of slaves. The northern states had mostly gotten rid of slavery minus a few states...........literally every southern state still had slavery......and slavery was getting worse in all of them. The northern states were trying to stop the expansion of slavery.......southern states were fighting to create more slave states and enshrined slavery in their new constitution rather than gradual emancipation. As a white man in 2022, ignorant and sheltered.....you can make/stake your claim that; "the average American’s attitude towards blacks and slavery weren’t much different in the north or south.". But for the blacks living and breathing in that time, there was a clear difference........In the end, they fought for the kettle (the north) to defeat the pot (the south).......Take your lost cause garbage elsewhere. The south seceded, committed treason and plunged the nation in division and war because they could no longer protect African slavery if they remained in the union. It's as simple as that, We have proof and direct admissions from several southern governors, senators, house representatives, state legislators, generals, confederate president and vice president, commissioners, compromises, secession conventions etc..........hundreds of thousands of words, as many as the bloody bible to prove this. smh civilwarcauses.org/

@@kninezbanks Wow, that’s quite a straw man you built there! My only point was that the AVERAGE citizen in the North wasn’t exactly an ardent abolitionist. Are you saying the average white person in the North, circa 1860, didn’t hold prejudicial views? Why did Lincoln refuse to make slavery the central talking point for going to war? He knew that most people wouldn’t want to get into a war just to ensure emancipation. He had to wait until a year into the war the make it a key issue. And even then it was more of a political move to pivot and change direction in a war that was going very badly for the North. Don’t buy into the political narratives that the Civil War was some crusade of the North to finally live up to the Constitution. In the end, everything is about politics, money and power.

@@MrTee-hw7mp "My only point was that the AVERAGE citizen in the North wasn’t exactly an ardent abolitionist"......The North was ruled by politicians and state legislatures who put in "Personal liberty bills" against the constitution to go against returning runaway slaves.........These people were not Gods, They were voted into power by their constituents......thus most Northern voters were against slavery. "Are you saying the average white person in the North, circa 1860, didn’t hold prejudicial views?".........They did.......someone can commit assault.....ranging from shoving you aside to beating you with a baseball bat......Prejudice has a spectrum.....The average white Southerner was more prejudiced than the average white Northerner........From believing that blacks are animals that deserved to be enslaved and should never be free............To believing that whites are superior to blacks and should be separate but don't deserve to be treated like farm animals.....I'd take the latter any day. The fact is that the Northern states were the only ones trying to stop the spread of slavery....The southern states were fighting to keep it spreading like a cancer, the south enshrined slavery in their constitution and only allowed states that accepted slavery and white supremacy into their new country. The North fought to keep the country together, the south fought to keep slavery alive in the south, something they could not do if they remained a part of the country......as that was the direction the North was trying to take the entire country. The analogy goes....the pot calling the kettle black......admitting flaws on both sides, but one being worse than the other......for many ignorant privileged white males living in America in 1860, it didn't really matter who won....To a black person living in a country where the vast majority of black men, women and children, people who look like you, and are being held hostage in one half of the country.......it very much mattered who won. I don't care about the North, The south just needs to stop lying about the fact that the seceded to protect slavery. There are hundreds of thousand of words, as many and more legitimate as the bloody bible, from the southern president, vice president, governors, senators, house reps, state supreme court justices, commissioners, conventions, compromises......admitting over and over again.....that the cause of the divide and their motive to secede and the only solutions they would accept to not secede........revolved primarily if not entirely around African slavery.

@@kninezbanks you make some good points. I just disagree on the importance the North put on slavery as a reason to engage in a civil war. If the South was allowed to spread slavery into the west, the number of slave states would eventually overcome the number of free states (see the Compromise of 1850 and the Missouri Compromise) tipping the scales toward the South in terms of power in Congress. This, and of course, the moral issue of human bondage(to a lesser extent), are elements that built up over time to a boiling point and led to civil war. Both were important issues. It’s just MHO that Northern politicians were more motivated by power. Given the values of the time, I don’t think the majority of the people could’ve been persuaded to enter into a civil war if the only issue at hand was freeing the slaves. They fought to preserve the Union, first and foremost. Even Lincoln admitted this fact.

Actually your wrong. There was an economic war going on between the north and the south. Northern ports in New your and Baltimore were losing revenue to ports in the south such as in New Orleans, Savannah, and Charleston. Your Hollywood version of history is pathetic. Please read "An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States" by Charles Beard for further detail.
