Del Shannon even changed his hairstyle trying to keep up with the times. In this song he's verging on Punk Rock a bit ahead of its time but this song would also influence Punk Rockers in the years to come. He did this song in this fashion because musically he was competing with the British Invasion.

It was January 1963 and I was beginning my second year of collecting records (45s). Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt" was a good one to start with, followed in the weeks to come by "Wild Weekend" by the Rockin' Rebels; The Cascades' "Rhythm of the Rain"; Roy Orbison's "In Dreams"; "Pipeline" by The Chantay's; and "On Broadway" by The Drifters.

Watched him perform "Runaway" on Bandstand in April of '61. My mother and I would watch the show in the afternoons while waiting for my father to get home from work. My younger brother is across the room in his playpen bopping along to the music too. Some of the memories are pretty clear and my mother helped fill-in some details over the years. I also remember Del Shannon's "Runaway" being on the radio a _lot_ too. So many memories are 'punched up' because we were out somewhere and then the song was on the radio as mom or dad was driving. Of course they turned it up because they were young then. 😃

Sure wish that back row of dancing dudes had been replaced with more of those charming, sensuous "chicks" in the front row! Somehow they looked sexier to me in those heavy garments to keep them warm during a chilly day at a California beach than a bunch of nearly naked gals dancing around in one of those silly "beach party" films. A magnificent example of "less being more!" No greater recording from the rock/pop era than this immortal classic.

As a member of the same screwed up extended family and bit of a singer myself, I am really happy to see this. I always loved his stuff even before I found out we were fairly closely related. I always love hitting the same high notes and the emotion I feel in his songs always touches me deeply as well, perhaps because of the same dysfunctional family background. As I am now his age and have come close to dying due to quack pill pushers and pharmascammers and several close family members dying sudden just before what would have been Uncle Dels birthday, though I never really knew him much, im kind of working through some pretty rough stuff right now as well.

Perhaps the most progressive rock singer of the era. He composed and sang many of his own songs. RUNAWAY was one of the all-time greatest hits ever written. He introduced songs by both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to America well before they were known here (FROM ME TO YOU and UNDER MY THUMB). He had toured with both groups in England.

Del got left at the station and was never able to move ahead with the music of the day. This song is a strange one, co-written by Del, it borders the land of the old 50s style of vocals and moves into the new 60s style of heavy lead guitars and drums pushing the beat. As usual Del is too verbal, using too many words to express a simple theme. His lyrics overwhelm the music and send them for a walk when he hits the falsetto point before the lead break. Very rare at the time, Del goes with an intense but brief lead break midway into the song. Here you can see why go-go dancers went out of style as the rock chords and drums were just too much for them. Del would have been more radical had he dumped 75% of the lyrics in this song and focused on a wide range of his specialty: minor chords. And chunked the background 50s era singers. Watching this video you can see just how out of place Del is. Dressed like Perry Como, yet playing a real loud tune on both of his numbers (on this program), Del comes off as too old to croon and too young to rock and roll. His vocal chops can't handle the new rock music. Although he was known in the trade as possessing a very, very 'loud' voice (someone said his voice was like an air raid siren) his vocal range was limited to rather monotone ballads of despair framed by falsetto highs to express his angst. You can tell in this song that he's out of his element singing it as he strains to hit the hard notes. At few times you can hear his voice crack a bit. Had he gone with fewer lyrics, maybe using words easier for his vocal range, the song might have sounded more natural and maybe even sold a few copies. As it was 'Move It On Over' never did anything. Del had hoped it would be a hit and allow him to get into rock and roll and out of teenage songs. His high hopes were dashed once again. Rather than give up an active music career as his wife and friends were pushing Del doubled down and stood firm staying in the music business. Shannon actually did write more rock type songs in the next 10 years. A few were covered. None were hits. His rock albums were flops, although one was a critical hit. Del even tried country music (which was more in his natural range) and had some luck getting gigs. However, nothing sold. Finally, Del went back in the studio where he worked as a consultant to new acts and a trade advisor to others. He tried to manage a group or two that he discovered as well. Del was under a lot of stress to earn a living in music and prove to the world he was more than a nobody from Cooperstown, MI. His new music failed to sustain a career for him, no matter how hard he tried. Del turned to drugs and serious drinking, a habit he took with him from Michigan eventually ending up in AA and going sober. An intense and high-energy person, Del suffered from bi-polar (manic) depression and experience mood swings all his adult life. However, without booze to self medicate Del gradually sunk into a long period of depression he was unable to shake. Finally, at the urging of friends, he signed on to do oldies music gigs. Getting back in the music and being around his fans cheered him up and gave him a reason to go on. Del had a good nearly 10 year run doing the oldies gigs. Near the end his depression was returning and was not letting up. Well meaning, his wife (2nd) forced him to see a shrink. He did and the doctor gave him a brand new type of drug to treat depression. Prozac. A few days later Del took out his rifle and shot himself in the head. Later, research into Prozac showed that it was dangerous when given to people with bi-polar depression with a serious bouts of major depression. Like Del had. Wife #2 sued the Prozac makers with no luck. Del's first wife, when asked why he killed himself, said he had a major conflict in his mind about who he really was, Del Shannon or Charles Westover. She said Charles pulled the trigger.

Holy Moly! There are more holes in your story than Nixon's Watergate Testimony. Do some more research. See what Andrew Oldham, Dave Edmunds, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty have to say about Del's later work. These guys aren't exactly musical lightweights. I'll take their word until evidence to the contrary comes in.

@@waukivorycopse2402 I think most of them were being kind. Had Del the talent they noted (and I've read what they've said) his career would have lasted more than the few years it did. Just a question for someone with a bit of techno knowledge. This is from the Holly a go go show I believe, and likely just a kinascope taken off a monitor. . Love it just the way it is ,reflection of the times and technology that was available (I do remember even though I was about 12 ) Bout what you got quality wise on TV, well maybe a bit better on the TV but not much. My question is... is there enough there to clean this up , even just a little bit? .
