Hello!
My name is Cathie Grimm & I'm a non-tenure-track German professor who reads (sometimes painfully) slowly and thoughtfully. On this channel, I will post reading updates, vlogs, and the occasional usually cat-centric shot. Thanks to all who watch and comment, it's what keeps me going! :-)
Fun fact: my mother was science-fiction and fantasy author Cherry Wilder: sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/wilder_cherry

Just a typical work/prep day in my life. The other rabbit hole I fell into as I finished up my grading was reading up on the Nobel Prize winners in physics, specifically the prediction that AI will soon become smarter than us.... www.nytimes.com/2024/10/08/science/nobel-prize-physics.html ruclips.net/video/MGJpR591oaM/видео.html&ab_channel=BBCNewsnight

I’ve had the eyelid twitch before - always happens when I’m run down. I found magnesium helps!! Take magnesium glycinate :D idk if you already take that - hooray for your work being done! 🎉
@@grrrrosey ok I will look for that! It’s definitely a work stress thing.
I always enjoy seeing how you are using your planners
I agree. As much as I love Marilynne Robinson’s writing and thought processes, her nonfiction is deep and takes heavy duty thinking.
@@alldbooks9165 heavy duty but something compels to want to try and get it. It’s just slow going.
Yay for getting all those exams graded! Enjoy the well earned rest. 🎉
@@lindseyreads5450 Thank you Lindsey! I feel like the hump of the semester is over!
Sometimes eye twitching can be due to lack of magnesium, it was for me so I take a daily supplement.
@@errata9968 I will look into getting a supplement!
Ohh my eyelid twitches so bad when my fatigue is high, its so annoying
I did watch it all! It's interesting to me to see how hard grading is in the context of hearing about casual (or zero-hour contracts they might be called in the US) employees of universities being hired to do the grading and being paid relatively little to do it
@@elzbethmrgn i get a decent wage as a teaching only person. Lower than all the real profs but ok for me. It also comes with fairly good health benefits. When I lost my tenure track job back in 2010 my monthly health insurance was almost as much as our mortgage! Thanks for watching!😁
@@elzbethmrgn i have noticed some connection to caffeine intake. Am also taking a complex B vitamin. Might get magnesium too.
@@thegrimmreader3649 I have seen everyone else's useful comments about magnesium so I am going to try some too!
This was so wonderful and relaxing Cathy. I just love day in the life type videos. I love seeing your planners, and cats, and food :) Don't write off the 'woo woo'. Sometimes it works even though I don't quite understand why.
I agree, I won't write it off completely! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I get remedial massage once a month and my guy does dry needling, and combined with advice/exercises from my physio thats how I stay on top of the arthritis (mostly! Some days it'll do what it wants to do 🙃)
I enjoyed this! I always like a vlog, and to me making them feels like performative productivity but in a get-my-butt-into-gear way. And, it's kind of like having company during the day!
There is a nice massage place just down the road I want to try: have not gotten many, and right now the back is so sore I'm a bit afraid of even a massage. What I really want to do is dig out the folder of physio stretches/exercises for my issues and start doing them again!! Baby steps!
@@elzbethmrgn yes performative productivity is the perfect phrase. Thanks for watching!
I tried osteopathy at some point at the advice of a friend who swears by it. Unfortunately, it did not make any difference for me. I do work with a physiotherapist at the advice of my rheumatologist.
I cut the cord with the local rheumatologist because we were not attuned to each other. Have a good back person who I see a bit further away. Love my general practitioner. For now I think I'll try to incorporate stretches into my routine.
i like these kinds of videos! what’s the substack about dillard and robinson?
@@lakvii it’s The Tourist by Phil Christman. Thanks for watching and commenting!😊

Thank you. It's nice to hear positive feedback on this medication.
Oh and Horrorstor, I didn’t know about that book! Lol, I know his personality from him talking about his campy love of soldier of fortune novels in discussions for Geeks Guide to the Galaxy. I haven’t read any of his books still. I’m not sure it’s my sense of humor, but have always meant to. This sounds like a good place for me to start. I just read Sun Storm by Asa Larsson and was reminded of the words that store appropriates from around its country. That book was a bit unnerving but a good Swedish crime noir I think.
I’ve read a few T Kingfisher books. “Of Blood and Bone” reminded me a bit of “Sabriel” by Garth Nix. “A Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking” was pretty funny. I like that term, what was it called “Baroque worrying”? I’ll have to listen again I think.
yes "Baroque worrying" I need to speak more clearly sorry!!
@@thegrimmreader3649 oh I was cleaning my garage and was thinking about a lot of what you said. I often listen to things several times because I have to write down books to remember.
@@thegrimmreader3649 I think you are very clear!

Nice video. I am sure you know that the audible for Finnegan's Wake is next level great.
Interesting. I have read a lot about George Rapp and the towns him and his group built.
Happy belated birthday!
Happy Birthday!!I’ve not heard of Bachmann. I’m curious now!
I loved Malina - especially the second part and the ending are sublime. Enjoy xx
Hi Cathy. Happy belated birthday. The Thousand Autumns and Utopia Avenue are definitely connected. I can’t tell you how without spoiling anything but in the universe of many of Mitchell’s novels, there is often some character overlap. I loved Thousand Autumns and I also really liked Utopia Avenue though it wasn’t popular on booktube when it came out. He’s a good storyteller.
What a sensational channel handle, wow, brilliant you! I'll have to think about your thoughts on shorter forms, I'm a poet, so am really drawn to compression. I'll enjoy thinking about your contrary insight. I'm very ADHD, so tangents are great, & I really enjoy your very considered, appreciative, but analytical approach to book reviewing. I really look forward to following your bookish adventures.
I’m glad to see you looking so happy and healthy.😊
hellloooo.. 😊
I love the Weeks cover! So fun!
I am a Hiroko Kubota aficionado.
Thanks for sharing. I always order my Hobonichi from Yoseka Stationery. I love their online demo of new products and their launch party. It’s my tradition.
Great video. I’m a fan of Jerusalem. Have you read Voice of the Fire? That’s my favourite.
I will definitely read it at some point: I'm almost finished with Jerusalem, what a work of genius!!
@@thegrimmreader3649 it’s a lot harder to start than Jerusalem with the first chapter being especially difficult but when it clicks it’s amazing. It’s about the Burroughs too and takes place over a long period of time
I love the coffee monsters co!
I follow Yumi Kitagishi too, I love her art so much 🥺 I ordered this same cover and discovered her this year because of Hobonichi!
Hi! There is no hobonichi freebie pen when ordering from Yoseka?
Hi no there wasn't, no Hobo freebies, like the pen or the little notebook.
@@thegrimmreader3649 thank you! 😊

Your three cats lined up in a row warms my heart. 😊😊. I can totally relate to the need to fill the tank, socially. Shorty September! Will I dip my toe into Knausgaard? Maybe!
For Knausgard toe dipping the audio read by Edoardo Ballerini is fantastic.
Your cats are so cute! And how placid is she just letting you put a book on her. Mine would be protesting 😂 It would be interesting to read Knausgaard’s fiction. I am now reading the third in his My Struggle series. I loved the first two. A month in the country is on my TBR. I can sympathize with your fatigue. I have been super fatigued lately. It’s not fun xx
@@thisisveryannoying The Knausgard fiction is similar in style so if you like My Struggle I think you’ll like the fiction. I’m so glad to have my do thing but rest Saturdays during the semester!!! Self care is important! Thanks for stopping by! 😁
I love your hair and earrings! So cool! I get so intimidated by long books!
Yay for Shorty September! I am one of the people that loves A Month in the Country!
And happy birthday month!!!
I hope you have a wonderful Shorty September! What a good reason to deviate from your long books!
Go, Cathy, go! 😀🎉
Room with a View is really, really good, snd A Month in the Country is as sublime as everyone says (I was also nervous going on given the hype). I woll sdmit, I did struggle with the Tey novel because of my knowledge of British history or rather lack thereof! I hope you enjoy it more!
What a fun video!
Such a nice concept, enjoyed listening.
I like how you mix it up with different styles/formats depending on what’s going on in your life. Beautiful stickers.
Welcome back! Glad you had a fun trip!
Great TBR - shame you're not going to wear leopard print shorts!! 😂 I love Room with a View! And julian sands!! ❤❤ Siân
