1976 25 hp Evinrude rebuild
- Air in fuel system - Gas line connector motor side - Oring dry and broken
Rebuild is almost done. Motor was found in pieces and almost scrap bought it as a project. Cleaned the good stuff up bought several pieces needing replacement. Went through the motor top to bottom. 2nd start after sitting a year started right up. We do have a prime issue not related to motor. Gas line - oring in the connector is cracked letting bits of air in the system causing the cough. Squeeze the primer bulb and she running perfect. Next video will be testing on lake at full speed. New project. Had no spark. After close inspection of the coils and wires, the wires rubbed down to bare wire and were shorting out. after wrapping with electrical tape. The motor started. Repaired the wires permanently after the video by cutting, stripping, soldering, heatshrink, and cover with wire sleeve to protect the wire from shorting out again. Tuned it in with a multimeter, checked spark, ignition coils, cleaned carb, and set the low speed needle. Checked impeller, thermostat, put new spark plugs in, and changed lower unit oil. Motor has good compression 125/125. When the throttle plate closes all the way the engine dies. Like too much fuel - problem was a couple reed valves were open and not shutting.

Took the 20 out on a test run. It ran great, had a full boat and we were going over 20 mph.

Had a fuel issue, bad fuel pump, missing orfice plug part 23, clogged exhaust too. Cleared exhaust, rebuilt carb put the orfice in and rebuilt the fuel pump. I had flipped the plastic piece in the pump that went to the carb and the engine ran then died and did not start back up, flipped that piece and it ran good.

Put a Noew OEM tune up kit in this evinrude, 5th trip it started to miss, adjusted points and still had issues, swapped coils and problem did not move from the cylinder that was missing, swapped condensers and the problem moved to the bottom cylinder. Put old points back in, put old condenser on the cylinder that was missing. Ran better but needs fine tuning now. OEM parts are worth the price. Had aftermarket tune up kit in and 5th trip fishing the condenser died when it got hot.

    You just gave me an idea. I have the same exact evinrude. 1973 18. Fat blue spark when I turn fly wheel just a 1/8 turn. I crank cold and run engine and it runs great. I try to recrank when warm/ hot and it’s stubborn (!!!) about recranking.

    Yes that is correct. On this engine the lean sneeze is happening due to a damaged oring in the fuel line connector and air was getting in at the connection and gas was leaking out. Causing a lean condition.

      Yeah this is a "lean sneeze". But what's described with air getting in to the line could cause this because air getting in would be nature make it too lean.

    It was a air leak issssue. Ended up doing several things. Replaced baffle gasket while there replaced lower crankshaft seal and o rings. Re-Torqued power head main bolts. Did the baffle and exhaust gaskets. Some of the cover gaskets. Carb cleaned it. Did a fuel pump rebuild. Put neew reeds in. Motor ran great after and sold it awhile ago.

      Yes. It was out of timing. Also adjusted the air fuel and it ran the way it should. It also had a float that was getting a very small amount of gas in it causing more weird problems. It hits 25 fully loaded 14 ft aluminum now

      The screw for air fuel on these is on front of carb at the top of the air intake hole it's inset screw. If I'm remembering correctly it set factory at 2 1/2 turn out after seating it all the way in. If it's popping and coughing adjust richer until it smooths out. 1/4 turn give it 30 seconds or so to adjust flow. It's not an instant change. If it's too rich it will be hard to keep running, adjust lean until it starts popping and coughing and 1/4 turn back until no popping and coughing

    These are great engines and can not be replace with today's big heavy four strokes. Take good care of it and it will last a life time
