Hi there . Great channel . I have a Staffordshire Bull terrier, so I have interest in the old history of the Black Country. New sub here.
As an old canal boat man I get fed up hearing the wrong statement that the railways killed the canals ….check the tonnage carried on the BCN alone for 1950 you will be surprised. The motorways and container ships killed our trade …..true end 1970.
Love the use of the Welsh word 'hiraeth' which means a longing for your home area. ❤
Ar think he was just tryin t' spake proppa for the videow.
Staffordshire is the home roots of my immediate maternal family, the Dardens. I hope to travel there someday and meet my English cuzes and invite them to my home in Monroe and Lamar Counties in Georgia USA.
Danelaw and Barons...Fox Hunters
This was a lovely video. It's Mow, as in Cow. Narrator sounds slightly like Rodney Bewes! No Molly Leigh tho.
Thank God we a brummie, black Country folk, the finest people in the world
Im a Perrins .]
Quite comprehensive tour--seriously, I feel as though I'd had the grand tour. Thank you for this!
Fantastic find !!
Thanks! I have one more I want to upload when I find time, but I'm always on the look out for more content so if you know of anything please let me know and I'll try to acquire it.
Great info here really enjoyed that. Just for the record from a person born looking up at Mow cop castle (26:17) Mow is pronounced "Mao" as in Mao Tse Tung.
Fantastic video, thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
lovely to see the places where i grew up, i used to live in great haywood until i married and emigrated to New Zealand i used to walk over the essex bridge to the "main road" to catch the midland red bus to Rugeley
Love my gornal
Excellent! Love the history and accent of the black country, thank you
I suspect many people will not be aware of just how large and how diverse a county Staffordshire was, before the 1974 Boundary Changes, that created the former West Midlands County.
Really enjoyed this video. Very interesting. Thankyou 👍
Love it - my dad's family lived in Hurst Hill (some of the earliest Council Housing), and yes my grandad used to keep pigeons. Many in the family were nailers - They all supported each other through 'thick and thin'. Happy days visiting them in the 1970s. Many a student or government representative ....would benefit from gaining a better understanding of black country grit, humour, and community cohesion 😊
Interesting content of life and work very enjoyable

He’s got a bit of Kiddy (Kidderminster) in there..!
Love this. I dred to think what he'd make of the lye today, terribly sad what a filthy ghetto its turned into.
Very good
I remember Wesley Perrins well. He used to visit St. Marks Primary School , Stambermill ,Lye in the 1960's He would teach us about the Black Country.
Hope you don't mind but this was one of the poems Jon taught which he was keen on. It was early last September nigh to Framlin’am-on-Sea, An’ ’twas Fair-day come to-morrow, an’ the time was after tea, An’ I met a painted caravan adown a dusty lane, A Pharaoh with his waggons comin’ jolt an’ creak an’ strain; A cheery cove an’ sunburnt, bold o’ eye and wrinkled up, An’ beside him on the splashboard sat a brindled tarrier pup, An’ a lurcher wise as Solomon an’ lean as fiddle-strings Was joggin’ in the dust along ‘is roundabouts and swings. ‘Goo’-day,’ said ‘e; ‘Goo’-day,’ said I; ‘an’ ‘ow d’you find things go, An’ what’s the chance o’ millions when you runs a travellin’ show?’ ‘I find,’ said ‘e, ‘things very much as ‘ow I’ve always found, For mostly they goes up and down or else goes round and round.’ Said ‘e, ‘The job’s the very spit o’ what it always were, It’s bread and bacon mostly when the dog don’t catch a ‘are; But lookin’ at it broad, an’ while it ain’t no merchant king’s, What’s lost upon the roundabouts we pulls up on the swings!’ ‘Goo’ luck,’ said ‘e; ‘Goo’ luck,’ said I; ‘you’ve put it past a doubt; An’ keep that lurcher on the road, the gamekeepers is out;’ ‘E thumped upon the footboard an’ ‘e lumbered on again To meet a gold-dust sunset down the owl-light in the lane; An’ the moon she climbed the ‘azels, while a night-jar seemed to spin That Pharaoh’s wisdom o’er again, ‘is sooth of lose-and-win; For ‘up an’ down an’ round,’ said ‘e, ‘goes all appointed things, An’ losses on the roundabouts means profits on the swings!’
My old teacher back in 60's a very decent one at that Mr Raven.
Do you mind me asking what school that was? I'm trying to compile as much biographical information about his as I can. If you had any thoughts or anecdotes about him I'd definitely be interested in hearing them!
@@StaffordshireHiraeth Etheridge County Secondary Bilston. The school was knocked down when the Black Country route was built. Jon taught us poetry and music I still remember some of them. He was a decent guy outside the classroom and always liked to talk about the local area but inside a disciplinarian some may not have got on to well with him but the majority did. My parents kept the Pipe Hall hotel in Bilston and he came to our folk club there once, greeted me with hello young Jonesy what are you doing here, told him I lived there. As I said a decent guy. I left school 1964 the year Jon started there.
@@oldhippiejon Thank you very much that's so interesting to hear. I wonder if he was teaching you some of the folk songs he was researching at the time.
A very interesting piece of work. Really enjoyed it. There must be loads more stories and traditions hiding in the vaults.
love this from quarry bonk
Just came across this fantastic piece and I remember Wesley Perrins well , he some times gave talks at our school and god could he talk 😄 he didn't talk the same Black Country as us but more of a posh Black Country because he was "educated" , but fun to listen to ,,, great memories , thanks
Perfect illustration of white privilege.
The black country, lovely, clever people, hard working and made the very best to be exported the world over. Renowned for sharp edge tools among many, many other things. Lovely video thanks for showing to us.😀
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
Got am old ghost story passed down you want to here it
An interesting piece, says one Perrins to another! (There aren't many of us left).
Wesley Perrins was a lovely man and a good friend of my father. He lived in Lye and I recall chatting to him around 1980, not long before he died. I think he would be surprised at Lye in 2022. Also, I suspect that he was reading from a document he'd written out which was added to this film at the time. Just a guess however.
That accent is crazy. Stourbridge? Is that extinct or just idiosyncratic to him? It’s kinda Brum but with some West Country rhoticity and other alien pronunciations.
He mentions somewhere, perhaps another interview how he was sent to public speaking lessons which helped him to become an MP. Personally I think his accent is the result of both his Black Country roots as well elocution lessons to make him more easily understandable.
I was born in Birmigham Loveday Street Hospital and raised in Tipton in a working class family. His accent doesn't sound Black Country to me.
Being bought up around the area it’s almost certainly between Dudley Cradley Lye Gornal accent but hard to pinpoint exactly
I have just googled him 😂he’s from Lye / Wollescote area in between Dudley and Stourbridge he was a trade unionist and Labour mp so probably adjusted his accent to be understandable 😩
It definitely does
Nice "Hidden" gem.
Good stuff
