Aah, I missed the stream! You were having such a rough time, omg. This game is so frustrating. Let me give you a couple of nudges (since you asked but I wasn’t there). You need to uncoil that snake in order to proceed. But snakey is *very* particular about where you pet her, it has to be exactly on that black line. You don’t need to do anything with that dam after she’s gone (but you’ll need it to block some water later, you *can* do that now if you want), just go back to the little plaza where that weird tube sticking up out of the ground is and it’ll trigger some info/tasks for you, that will keep you busy for a while. After that you’ll deal with the little submersible thing. You’ve got the right idea, just other things have to happen before your ideas will work. So don’t give up, just try again after you do the other stuff first. Hopefully I can be there Wednesday in case you get stumped again!

Whee, out-shouted! Yeah Haven’s .. special. I will give you two pieces of advice, because the game mechanics are wack. But I’ll also give you spoiler space if you feel like you’re not frustrated enough yet 😂 . . . . . . . #1, there’s more to see in that hut. But you’ll have to do more pixel hunting for the trigger spots because that hand cursor is SO SLOW. #2, timing is important with the sound puzzle, and that includes note length. The long ones aren’t nearly as long as you’re making them! Think, like, quarter and whole notes, or maybe even quarter and dotted half. Not quarter and then three solid bars 😂 You’re doing really well though, you figured out the feet faster than most people. And you’re right about the puzzles: they aren’t necessarily bad (though pairing a slow-moving, clumsy control interface with a timing puzzle is a questionable choice), but not having and real indication what you’re trying to achieve leaves you feeling frustrated. That said, there are some bad puzzles, where the solution is just completely non-intuitive. Like blowing up the platform at the end of Spire: how are you supposed to know to do that? Those explosions destroy whole buildings, why would your goal be to do that? There’s no reason it should only blow up just enough to clear the debris from the elevator. And yet, that’s what you’re meant to do. That Haven puzzle with the two flippy hammers and the sliding rail things that, if solved, open that door? That’s another one with a crazy solution, which I can tell you about whenever you’re ready. *deep breath* Myst 4 is my least favorite, can you tell? 😅

    • @DianeGraft
      @DianeGraft 20 дней назад

Yes, I was going to leave the same comment about note length. The alarm calls that the mangrees made before is a good indicator of how long the tones are, and how there aren't pauses in them. Otherwise, this instrument just takes practice to learn how to play it, that was the most frustrating part for me..

I'm from just outside Portland originally! I love Powell's, and you're right, all the little hidden nooks and hallways are just the greatest, especially for a bookstore. I moved away from Oregon a long time ago, tho, and I miss it more every year. The horsey chess pieces are knights; rooks are the castle ones at the ends! Easy mistake tho, they're right next to each other 😂 Myst 4 is, unfortunately, very bad at letting you know just what it is you're meant to be doing. Pair that with also being bad at making it clear why certain things happen when they do, and it just leads to a *lot* of confusion. Most of the puzzle "solving" ends up being randomly stumbling around, poking at things until you fumble your way to the end. Like just happening to send over the correct crystal while the cup isn't there, which isn't something people ever try intentionally (because why would you? It must surely be wrong). It isn't exactly rewarding gameplay. But good luck with Haven 😅

1:15:00 There are a handful of places in this game where there’ll be one thing on top of another thing, and you have to move the top thing aside; the indication for this is the hand becoming a grabby hand right along the grabbable edge of the top thing. But it’s super easy to miss because the hand is slow to react, and the hitbox to trigger it is small. Be ready to do a lot of very slowly moving the cursor over your screen to find interactable elements when you get stuck and can’t figure out what you’re missing. Reaction speed is the biggest problem with this hand cursor (after the creepiness). And yes, take pictures of *everything* you think might be important. Worst case you end up with pics you don’t need, best case you save yourself a lot of struggle refinding a clue you think you saw somewhere (but aren’t sure where).

I like the format where they have a point system and don't send anyone home. Considering the time and money and effort the All Stars put in to put together such amazing outfits, I appreciate that they have a show structure where we get to see them all. And I am especially proud of how far Gottmik and Miss Vanjie have come, they have grown into really amazing performers. The winner was worthy of a crown, no objections to that choice.

I loved AS9's format, loved seeing all the queens all the time, and especially loved how positive the judges were all the time! It was a fun break from the drama that most seasons have. You stayed remarkably patient for someone who didn’t know there were *three* distinct sets of steam valves. The game really pulls a dirty trick there, spinning you around so you can’t see that the valves aren’t moving up with you. Like, needing to interact with that one specific small window to get the power going is bad enough, but actively hiding part of a puzzle is just no fair. It’s a big reason Voltaic is always rated really low on lists of “great Myst ages” (Amateria is nearly always at the top, or very close). I keep meaning to catch you live, but I think you run at the same time as a friend of mine so I’m always busy there. One day! Oh, and while I’m thinking about it: getting Myst 4 to run is notoriously hard. Usually you have to disable drivers or other fancy shenanigans, and then sometimes if you alt-tab out to do something else, the game might crash, or OBS might; it’s a real fun time. I’ve played all the Myst games, and Amateria is my absolute favorite in terms of environment. The puzzles are all fairly straightforward mechanics, no weird esoteric clues that you have to divine the solution to, and that’s really nice, but the *environment*. Every single view is stunning, every little detail is just perfect. Edanna (one of the other worlds in Exile) is my favorite overall, because environment + soundtrack + puzzle creativity, but the visuals on their own haven’t got anything on Amateria’s. If you installed some of the stained glass panels they use on the little hut in J’nanin into the central dome here, it would be perfect, and I wish such a place actually existed.

0:40 neither Miller brother worked for Presto or had an official development role in this game. For whatever reason, another developer was sought for another sequel by Cyan Worlds (orginal dev of Myst and Riven, also Uru and Myst V, alsoresponsible for the remakes of Myst and Riven) and Mattel, who owned the franchise at that time. It was basically put out for tender, and Presto put together the best proposal. Presto, before Myst III, was probably best known for another FMV puzzler, the Journeyman Project series of games. You'll see a lot of DNA crossing between Myst III, for instance, and the Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time. The Millers simply consulted (iirc mostly Rand). Rand also reprised the role of Atrus for this and all subsequent games. Myst IV was similarly outsourced, before Cyan brought the game back in house for Uru and Myst V.

2:55 The conflict between them came from having very different conceptions of what it meant to restore D'ni. For Gehn, it meant using the Art to build an empire to rule over as gods. For Atrus, it meant something like reuniting the D'ni people who were made refugees by the destruction of the city of D'ni, and giving them a place to live together again.

Happy to see you continue the Myst series! Allow me to answer some lore questions that came up at the end of Riven and at the beginning of this stream: 1) The Star Fissure is kept intentionally vage and is a system that connects different worlds. At the beginning of Myst, Atrus' Myst book falls into the fissure (from Riven) and lands somewhere near you where you pick it up, link to Myst and start the events of Myst and Riven. At the end of Riven you fall back into the fissure returning safely back to where you came from. Which brings us to the question... 2) Where are you located and where is Tomahna (Atrus' new home where you started the game Exile)? Well, your feeling of "Southern Utah" is not far off! It is supposed to be somewhere in New Mexico! That's why you can go there and meet Atrus again! Now you say ... wait a minute, isn't Atrus in some different world/Age? Well, he WAS. But he left the Age of Myst and built a new home for his family close to where he was born - yes, Atrus was born here on Earth in a cliff dwelling his family calls "The Cleft". Which brings us to the last question: 3) Isn't Atrus supposed to be from a different civilization? What does he do here on Earth? Yes, Atrus has a family history that links him to the people known as the D'ni. However, he himself is only 1/4 D'ni (his father Gehn is 1/2 D'ni, 1/2 human and his mother Keta is human). The ancient D'ni had to flee their home world because it was dying and used the Art of writing Linking Books to find a new home world ... and guess which Age they chose to link to? ... Earth - where they lived underground deep below the New Mexico desert in a vast cavern for over 10.000 years. Do you want to know what became of Sirrus and Achenar? Play "Myst IV - Revelation" Do you want to explore more of Atrus' beautiful home of Tomahna? Play "Myst IV - Revelation" Do you want to find out where the things landed that fell into the fissure at the end of Riven? Play "Uru - Ages Beyond Myst" Do you want to find out more about the huge underground cavern that the D'ni lived in? Play "Uru - Ages Beyond Myst" Do you want to find out more why the D'ni empire fell and what Atrus' family has to do with it and how Myst and Riven play a central role in that story? Read the fantastic books "Book of Atrus", "Book of Ti'ana" and "Book of D'ni" :)

A game mechanic that was different in the original 5 CD game - each move took a moment to load. There was no running in the original, and it forced you to slow down and really look at the things in your surroundings. And for easier reference, the large tusked fish is called a "wahrk" and the skittish creatures in the lagoon are "sunners". You've already caught that the frogs are what Gehn calls "ytrams".

That's a good hint, I definitely need to start slowing down in this game. And I'll have to remember the names of the Sunners and the Wahrks! I've already finished my next stream but I'll start calling them that in the stream after that.

I love watching people who know nothing about these games play them for the first time .. seriously .. nothing like watching someone go ... AH HA !!! Riven remake is going to be sweet !

Obduction! That might be my favorite game from Cyan so far, I think it may be as much of a masterpiece as Riven. Rand Miller was involved in the game design, and Robyn Miller plays a character in the game.

My only complaint is the game audio is often louder than you are.

Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately I recorded this stream on a single audio channel so I can't adjust the balance for this one. But in later streams I've adjusted the settings and the balance is better now!

1:10:18 I've never seen that one either, and I've been through this game many times. Weird.

Very weird! Makes me interested to see how many new clips will be in the remake.

Sounds like you're not a fan of reading but the books in this game are vital. You should also read the book in Gehn's lab. You previously only read the last two pages which you thought were the whole book. There's A LOT of info you've missed there.

I always worry people will get bored by me reading out loud haha but you're right! The few pages I have read have told me a lot about the game so I'll make sure to keep reading the rest in the next stream.

@@hiccupholmes I guess you don't have to read it on stream but read it yourself at least. Also a word of advice for other books you'll come across - some of the handwriting is REALLY hard to read. You can just look up a transcription online/read it off stream, but take note of any drawings or pictures because they tend to be important. Good luck!

Really enjoyable watching you play. You're very observant and methodical and I love your commentary. Are you playing this in anticipation of the remake?

Thank you so much! And no, I actually had no idea the remake of Riven was coming out when I started the Myst series a few weeks back.
