Some of you have mentioned that your DVD player won't play some of your discs. It may not be disc rot but something as simple as updating the player's firmware. Some players are no longer supported by the manufacturer and will not play newer discs. I have a player manufactured in 2009 and the manufacturer issued its last firmware update in 2014. No problems with playback until a few BD made in 2020 had audio but no video.

With all due respect I don't think you know what disc rot is. It doesn't simply mean the disc won't play. There could be many reasons for that (including scratches on the printed side that won't allow the laser to reflect). Disc rot is when the chemicals of the disc break down over time. Believe me you don't have to look through a magnifying glass to see it! I have a homemade DVD (DVD-RW to be exact) that looks like it soaked up water and started to melt! The Showtime movie disc you showed looked like the only one that might have it due to the brownish areas on the play area. If it really is disc rot it will get visibly worse as time goes on

If I have a DVD with playback issues usually at the same spot, are you saying that I should inspect the printed art on the opposite side of the recording and inspect for scratches or chipped ink? What can I use to repair it before throwing the disc away?

I have several DVD's, not just WB, that not a fingerprint or scratch on them, won't play properly any longer. So the term is "disc rot", huh? I have used several players, some older ones will work better, but some are just lost. This happened to many of my "Battlestar Galactica" reboot DVD's (Universal) bought season by season; and there is not a streaming alternative for the show. Nothing like taking mint care of my DVD collection and it just goes down all on its own. I still much prefer physical media over streaming ("Opps! Something went wrong!"}, but setting down to relax and watch an old DVD and it freezing up is a good way to get riled up instead of enjoying the movie.

in reality no matter how good of a quality disc or how well you take care of it it will eventually die even without the disc rot issue. All optical media as well as magnetic media will slowly die. Its because of the sun itself. The sun emits solar radiation that will destroy them unless they are buried underground to block harmful radiation. Still no excuse for these companies creating faulty dvds.

I understand what you mean. The sound effect I used in the video was ripped from the cd I had shown and was imported into my finished video. Originally, I intended to play the sound effect on a cd player but my Sony Walkman stopped working recently. Initially, the video was supposed to be uploaded on the same day as the mushroom video in 2015, but copyright claims from History Channel delayed my upload. As a result of that, the video has been on my channel for months and has only recently started gaining viewership. I have nothing to gain from debunking an older video like that since my channel is too small to monetize.

Looking at your European Vacation disc, I can see that it has been buffed poorly. At some point in the past someone used a disc doctor on it. You can see the pattern in the light. Very bad for discs and it appears that most of the wear is focused near the center ring where the disc starts reading from. In my opinion, not discs rot, but definitely has wear in the places that are vital to it’s functionality. I have several disc rotted discs in my collection, but they all have a certain hue to bottom of the disc. I also have a couple of thousand dollar disc resurfacing machines that will make discs look new. Not sure what you are using. You may need to show your process of buffing discs if you haven’t already. I own a video store and deal with disc repair for customers every day and I am just trying to help. Disc rot is a real thing, but that’s not always the issue.

I don't know why, it's not scary yet it's the stuff of nightmares. Now I do this dance at my children. My youngest gets it. I start this dance at him and he covers his head and screams at me to stop. Clayton, THANKS For Trying to Inform ! From the sounds of it most of your exanples appear to be manufacturing defects. Problems encountered in the middle of the movie are from reading the middle tracks of the metal ring as the main feature is recorded on the disc from the inner circle to the edge. Nice of you the show the typical appearance of the rotting metal recording layer as it starts. Other than for the purposes of this video, what reason is there to keep "rotten" freature? When you buff a disc do you use the same micro size for all types of disc such as CD, DVD, & Blu-Ray? I had used an inexpwnsive machine to remove scratches from used DVDs, but it consumed too much time and gave up as it was not worth the effort.

To be honest with you it looks like you don’t know how to handle your disc, buffing a movie should be a last resort if it doesn’t work, because once you scratch the first layer of a DVD you are potentially putting cracks in the protective coating that will allow air to get in and rot your disc overtime.

If you buff it and remove that protective layer, your disc is more prone to things like disc rot because air will get in to it. Judging from the video where he’s showing his DVDs, it is very clear. He does not know how to handle them. You don’t have to take my word for it go ask any person that is a serious movie collector or music collector CDs they’re all gonna tell you what I just said. If you handle your disc correctly, it can last anywhere from 50 to 100 years.

@@michaeldietz2648 The data layer is sandwiched in between 2 layers of poly-carbonate. You would have to remove a significant amount of material before you start to expose the data layer. I would expect this guy only buffed these discs in an attempt to get them to work. Chemical instability in the data layer or de-lamination of the layers significant enough to allow for oxidation of the data layer are the most likely causes of disc rot.

Doesn't always work. Old severe oxidation (or other chemical contamination) of the metal recording surface will be visible to the naked eye. Visual inspection of "previous viewed" discs is still recommended for any damage to the plastic protective layer the laser reads through. And some plastics also turn yellow on DVDs which can block laser light when it becmes dark.

are european PAL dvds suffering from this?

Not to that extent.....I have hundreds of DVDs and only two discs are affected by "disc rot" or manufacturing defects. Both of them were special editions of "Terminator" and "Silence of the lambs" by MGM.....these are the two that I'm at least aware of. But in the US it seems to be a huge problem....but not in europe....at least not yet.

Sometimes a surface scratch will stop the disc from playing. In the past, rental stores used to fix them in a machine which used a paste

    • @weldonyoung1013

Yes it is much like buffing. However with higher density discs, like Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray, the "paste grit" or abrasive needs to be as fine as possible.

Okay so Warner is the only one that I heard had has a big problem. Why is that a reason to get rid of all of your movies. Also this isn't a problem with Blu-rays that I know of. And with me personally I haven't had any problem with my Warner DVD so far. If all 50 of your Warner movies were bad I'm wondering where you keeping them in a garage?

My definition, if Warner Brothers DVDs are bad, so are MGM and RKO. This involves thousands of movies.
